We are now in August and in the UK in my city (Plymouth) this means the British Fireworks Championships. Held over 2 nights (this year it's the 14/15th) with 6 teams competing over the 2 nights. Weather and health permitting, I hope to be there on at least 1 of the nights with my D3400. I do have the IR shutter release and I do have a tripod, so with your settings advice I am good to go. If I can't make it to the actual venue I do have quite a good vantage point near to where I live so I am hopeful of some good shots.

I've got a d3200 that I use with the same generic remote without any issues. The sensor on the front of the camera is in the grip handle, there's a small plastic dot in the center of it. That's the sensor. There's another one on the back, that works very well too

I have an 'older' D3100 and am excited about taking some shots of tomorrow night's Sternwheel Festival fireworks display on the Ohio River. Will be a bit of a challenge, since I've never shot real decent fireworks before, and I'll be sitting along a set of cliffs about three miles downriver. Tried it last year and got caught in the rain. Thanks very much for the instructions.

Glad to be of help and enjoy the fireworks!:) The D3100 is a capable camera and should be able to capture fireworks. Wish I had seen this video last year (2018), but noticed it earlier today before I went to work for a new year "Have a few drinks, and take the rest of the christmas candy/new year party 'things' home!" 'party' 😁 I managed to get a few good shots, even at my bad location. There's houses all around me, and most of the firework was covered by them, but as said; I did manage to get a few good shots. I even had a chance to catch a car driving by to get my first 'proper' time lapse photo with some nice trailing brake lights 😁 You never fail to impress me Mark - Hope you have a great new year, and may 2020 bring you many more subs, fortune and prosperity.

@@RealWorld No worries Mark - I've been busy with work myself, and while I'm hanging out on KZbin I'm not that _''social''_ when I'm just trying to unwind - I have some catching up to do myself 😊 But yeah I did notice your uploads have been "lacking", but I'd much rather have quality over quantity! I love your approach to your uploads, the entire vibe that comes from them and all the technical info that you give out. Just in case you re-read this comment I have a few suggestions for possible content in 2020: - How to take photos of the sun without ruining your eye, and taking care of your equipment (Photo Genius got a question like this, and said exposure to the sun might/can do damage to the sensor). - Star photography, specifically, equipment: ESPECIALLY if you're able to borrow some from your local photo gear vendor, else please don't bother (I really want to invest in a startracker-type-thingy myself, but I'm kinda strapped for most of the year - Trying to save up for a trip to Scotland and my license 😁) I also have an "odd" question: Do you use an IPS monitor or a TN/VA monitor? My brother recently got a new gaming monitor, which is IPS and while I've constantly heard the colour reproduction is better I was dumbfounded by it. Honestly I'll keep an eye out for a cheap IPS monitor simply for editing photos during 2020.

RealWorld By the way during fireworks what’s the preferred zoom on the lense 18 35 or 50 on the kitlens. I have a 35 mm prime lense
@RealWorld6 жыл бұрын
I typically like to leverage a zoom lens since my distance to the show may vary and I can use a higher aperture (like f/8, f/11, etc.). If I did not have a zoom lens and given the choice of a 18, 35, or 50, I would lean towards the 35:).

Watching this on the 5th November in the UK. For us this is Guy Fawkes night or bonfire night. A day to commemorate an attempt to blow up the houses of parliament. There will be a lot of fireworks tonight but I won't be photographing or going to a display. On Sunday November 11 we have a huge display to commemorate the end of WW1. I will be putting your advice to good use then using my d3200. On the subject of the ir sensor the D3200 has two one on front and one on the rear. Seems odd the newer model seems to lack this along with some other features like ability to plug in external mic.

Thanks for the post and welcome from the United States!:) Sounds like you have couple of great opportunities to capture some fireworks:). Yes, the D7100 will support the wireless remote:). You need to set the camera in the wireless remote mode first (rotate the large dial to an icon that looks like a small/tiny remote). When in this mode, the camera should receive a signal from the remote:).

Sadly I don't think focusing at infinity is as simple as "rotate it in this direction as much as you can". I've tried this for shooting star fields, and it didn't work; after some research, I think the problem is that the last setting is actually _past_ infinity (whatever this is supposed to mean), the real infinity is somewhere a bit in the other direction. So, autofocus on the moon or in the distance like you say, and if there's no moon or any lights around... live view, zoomed in, and try to get the dots to be as small as possible... I don't know, if there's a better way, I'm definitely open to suggestions...

Thanks for the post and I have a few thoughts on the subject:). You are correct and I have heard/experienced the same - infinity is actually a slight rotation back from a traditional infinity indicator on any given lens. Unfortunately, the Nikon 18-55 lens does not have an infinity indicator along with other lenses. A major concept to understand is hyper focal distance. This is the distance at which the given point to infinity will be in focus. I created a video which might be of some help to better understand the concept - kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3jIpKuAmr5rldU

Notice all your video your white balance is always on auto. Do you use them? Just curious.thanks for the great videos and lessons?respect 🙏

Thanks for the post/question:). Yes, I tend to leave my WB on auto as it seems to work well. In addition, since I shoot in RAW, I can easily change it in post edit if needed:).

Thanks for the post/feedback!:) LOL - I thought the same after viewing the image!:) I believe most of the people were standing relatively still watching the fireworks which makes for a cool/interested add to the image in my opinion.

Any advice for using a Nikon D40 ( lower end) for Astronomical Photography? I'm new to this but would love to start doing long exposures of the night sky. Have you made a video on this topic? Thank you in advance

The D40 should work in a similar fashion as the D3400 ... it might be older but still has the ability to control the aperture, shutter, etc.:). I created a video on shooting stars which might be of help - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqbZiGd-gZimqdE

Would you use the same techniques and settings for colored smoke bombs?
@RealWorld6 жыл бұрын
LOL - I had someone ask a similar question just the other day!:) In short, yes. Keep in mind that you will want to close the aperture all the way down or use an ND filter if shooting during the day (this will help to keep the shutter open longer and maintain a proper exposure):)
