Hmmmm ... great question!:) I have used a couple of cameras to record video, and I suspect this was recorded with the Canon T7i. Canon does a nice job with video in my opinion:).

Hey bud, love your explanation very simple and easy to understand. In regards to nightspace shots, could give us some explanation on the white balance (WB) settings as well please. I've learnt it over time on how WB settings can change the outlook of the picture colors. It would be great to hear from you.

Marvellous photography & very very useful instructions for night photography. Sir, why the focusing mode is set to AF-C when you were taking photos of stationary objects like statutes, buildings etc. & reason for setting Exposure Compensation at -0.7 all along.

Thanks for the post/feedback Sanjoy and glad to be of help!:) You are very observant - good catch!:) Since I shoot with back button focus ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKK4lpWmhsqWors ), I leave my camera in AF-C. This allows me to hold the back button down to track focus on moving subjects or simply press once for stationary. The exposure compensation is not needed:). I took some shots earlier during the day with the exposure compensation adjusted and simply forgot to set back to zero:).

Great video! I need help with the aperature because I'm using Nikon D3500 with both kit lenses (18-55mm lens and the 70-300mm) and I can't do aperatures above 6.3. What lens are you using for those incredible pics?

Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) To ensure we are on the same page ... when you say aperture above 6.3, do you mean 5, 4, etc. or do you mean 8, 9, etc.? You should be able to close the aperture down to something much greater at any focal range (meaning you should be able to set the aperture to 8, 9, etc.). If you want to open the aperture more (meaning 5, 4, etc.), you will be limited depending on the lens and focal range. For example, if you are zoomed all the way in to a given subject and want to open the aperture as wide as you can, you will hit a limit of 6.3 on the 70-300 and 5.6 on the 18-55 (you will see a range printed on the lens which indicates the widest aperture you can use at both extremes of the lens). Hope this helps:). I used the 18-55 kit lens to capture all images in the video:).

I have a problem with my camera or with my technique while focusing using back button focus. I can't recompose my image after focus locking. When I started to recompose it changes the focus and while I tracking the focus I'm doubtful that is it tracking correctly or not? Please help me to sort it out. While tracking I'm holding the back button pressed.

Ahhhh yes, the Nikon 16-85 is a great/solid lens ( amzn.to/2Mhx5cZ ). The wider range is well suited for landscapes as well.

Hi, this interesting video motivated me to take some nightscape shots by myself :) and one question came into my mind. I took some photos of a train station building by night and took care of the exposure display. Although the camera said that my pictures weren't overexposed or underexposed (I was exactly in the middle like you explained in the video), the light of the building, in my opinion, was to bright. So I watched your video again to find something that maybe I haven't considered. And now I recognised that you adjusted your exposure compensation at -0,7 on the bottom right of the camera display. I read about the compensation that it actually changes the exposure time. And then I was asking myself why do they give you this option when you can also change the exposure time with the shutter speed because to me at the moment it seems like it is the same. As I was taking some indoor shots I turned the exposure compensation up a little bit to brighten up the room. But after that I had to compensate my aperture or shutter speed in order to be not overexposed. And at the beginning I was thinking about how the exposure compensation actually works and if it could just be the software that brightens the picture or darkens it a little bit.

Thanks for the post/feedback!:) Great catch on the -0.7 on my video as well:). This was not by design as I believe the setting was a result of previous photos taken during the day. Nonetheless, you surface a great discussion point - exposure compensation. What is it for and why use it? In short, if you suspect the camera's metering mode is slightly off for whatever reason, you might want to force the camera one or two steps up or down depending on the situation. For example, when shooting a subject with a relatively bright background and with the camera is matrix metering mode (which is standard but can be switched to center or spot), the camera may meter more for the background leaving your subject relatively dark. If this happens, you can leverage exposure compensation instructing the camera to exposure the image slightly to account for the situation. Hope this helps!:)

Hi thanks for the very informative teaching. I have couple of questions. 1. can i use any lens for the night photography? 2. Is raw image yields better quality than jpeg in night photography?

Thanks for the feedback and glad to be of help!:) Regarding #1 - yes, any lens will work. Regarding #2 - RAW will capture more data than JPEG, however you must post process all RAW images. Post processing RAW images allows you to tweak, modify, etc. before exporting back to JPEG for sharing. If you are not familiar with post process, you might consider staying in JPEG for now. JPEG means you camera is doing the processing for you. You can always post process a JPEG but will lose all the original data captured by the sensor. I shot in JPEG for many years and switched to RAW at one point ... I post process in Lightroom and really like the flexibility to apply additional creative processing as I see fit and not the camera:).

Excellent video and a great refresher of exposure basics to get you to try something new (for me). Was there a reason your exposure compensation was set to -2/3 on all your shots, or was it inadvertent?

Thanks,one of the best tutorial i'v seen so far,looking at the back of your camera i see wb=auto and you are using af-c is both importance?what i like best is you show the setting which is great to a novice like me.i have a wide angle 10-20mm and 24-85mm so which is the best for trails.

Thanks for the feedback Jackie and glad to be of help!:) I find the auto WB works well on this camera so I tend to leave it there. I also shoot in RAW which means I can quick change the WB in post processing if needed. I use AF-C as well because it offers more flexibility when paired with back button focus ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKK4lpWmhsqWors ):). The lens will depend on the scene - I would try both:). If you are in a relatively tight location like a busy downtown area, I would lean towards the 10-20mm, otherwise the 24-85 should do the trick:).

Thanks for the post/feedback/question Tim:). You do not have to shoot in RAW. If you are more comfortable with JPEG, not a problem:). I typically shoot in RAW as I want the most the camera has to offer and I like to post process:).
