I love using the f/1.8 lens in the gym as well. My primary volleyball lens is the 85mm f/1.8, which works well when I am situated close to the court and the extra light (vs my 70-200 f/2.8) makes a huge difference allowing for 1/1000 shutter speeds and acceptable ISO. I am looking at the 135mm f/1.8 for situations where I need more range (and more light than my f/2.8) but I probably need to be about 30 feet back to get full body in frame which is somewhat limiting in some of the gyms I shoot in. Great video, thanks

I love this lens. I use it to shoot football

Oh, I should have tried it out for football while I had it. Could be good in the endzone!

Those backgrounds =🔥 Really strong images, Derek! The extra 1.3 stops of light an f/1.8 gives over an f/2.8 can be huge for getting the shutter speed higher ... the ISO lower ... or a little of both). Plus the extra separation with that background blur. I'm currently editing some vball photos from a game this week; looked at the exif data of my last image and it was shot @ 130mm (on my 70-200), so naturally I've been thinking about a 135mm f/1.8. However, the first gap I need to fill is more reach. I find the 70-200mm isn't long enough for some of the angles I want to get from the stands and the end line (too much cropping), so a 120-300mm f/2.8 is my next test 👍

Yeah, I look at the info alot and see that I am close to the 135ish as well when using my 70-200 in the gym. So yeah, the extra light and pop from the background might be worth it for sure. I might be trying the 120-300 myself soon. I used to have the Sigma 120-300 back when I first started covering sports and it was insanely good.

@@DLivingston - Legit! Was it one of the earlier generations of the Sigma 120-300 or the latest 'Sport' one?
@DLivingston3 ай бұрын
@MarkReese it was an early model and it was so good

Great Video I use my older one Canon EF 135 2.0 since 15 years now every Weekend indoor with Handball, Volleyball, table tennis, waterball usw usw and it’s absolutely great. There is no need for me to change to the RF version- but maybe I will rent a RF soon to check if it’s that much better than the old EF version and worth changing it.
@renees82623 ай бұрын
Don’t do it unless you’re ready to switch. I have this lens (rf) and, it’s just the best. Used it for volleyball and it’s easily my favorite lens.
@DLivingston3 ай бұрын
Def no reason to move to the RF if the EF is still performing! I myself have eyed the EF version for awhile but wasn't up for rental at the time of looking so decided to go with the RF. EF might be the move if it performs close to the same. Thanks for watching!

I picked a mint condition EF 135mm F/2 with box and hood from Japan for about $400 and it’s great! I use it on my R6MKII and delivers great performance. It’s definitely showing it’s age, but it renders beautifully

Great images, Derek. What shutter speed did you use for them? Auto ISO? The gym where I shoot is a bit dim, so volleyball is challenging.
@DLivingston2 ай бұрын
Iso is usually 4000-6400 and my shutter is usually 1/800-1/1000. Depends on the lens and where in the gym I am. Light varies a little bit.
@DLivingston2 ай бұрын
Oh, just realized this is for the f1.8 so I’d say the iso was no higher than 4000 this go around.

This lens is ridiculously good. I have enough room in the gym I shoot basketball at, so I much prefer it over the 70-200 f/2.8: the extra 1 1/3 stop, the sharpness wide open, the AF speed... If they made a similarly performing 85mm I'd be happy to give them my money, but the 85mm f/1.2 doesn't have the same snappy AF.

Yeah this lens is so good. I would love to have it in my bag for sure. I know plenty of situations where it would come in nicely.
