Mr. Tyson & Mr. Nice, I'm forever thankful to you for the time & effort you put into bringing knowledge & enlightenment to our daily lives. Moreover, I can't begin to describe how your videos bring me peace during incredibly hard times. I wish for all the politicians in our world to be replaced with scientists/scientific-minded people. Thank you ❤🤗

The politicians are all puppets serving their corporate overlords. They hold no actual power or agency. If you want change, we need to remove the richest individuals who hold all the means of production as well as all media in their control and shape our society to be a money-making system to serve them and only them. Everything which happens, happens because rich people want it to happen. Such has been human civilization up until now. We are incredibly simple. The rich rule. Don't be fooled into thinking "politicians" affect anything. If the politicians are removed, the corporate overlords will simply find new puppets to bribe and feign the representation of the masses. Politicians are also a convenient scapegoat in addition to being loyal puppets for their masters who pay them. They function merely as the public figures who society vents against, fooling all of us into thinking they are to blame when in fact it's rich people lining their pockets that direct their actions. Thus do the rich conceal their control of us all. It's no accident that our Congressmen always reach a consensus that "dark money" should be allowed. They of course love not needing to reveal who lines their wallets, since their masters desire secrecy. Wouldn't want to spoil the illusion of the puppet show, now, right?

Back in 1966 I was a Boy Scout at camp in upstate NY. It was a moonless night. The boys and I were instructed to lay on the ground, with our feet pointed in a certain direction and a gentleman, basically gave us a tour of the sky. Lots of constellations were visible. I'll never forget it. I've been looking up since.

Neil & Chuck - THANK YOU!!! Those are the only perfect words I can come up with to tell you what and how I feel about you both and what you do. Yet… somehow it just doesn’t seem like enough. The two of you have impacted me, my life, plus so very many others, and the entire world! You are helping to educate everyone! Even if someone doesn’t watch you directly, they (in a step / degree of separation) speak to someone who does/has. Education is the only thing that can improve us, the society we live in, and the world we live on! You both are In-Deed two of the greatest people alive today. Our world is a much better place because of the two of you being in it. Truly - From My Heart: I Thank You -> for all that you have done / are doing / and will do!

You can do deep sky photography from your backyard these days. You need an equatorial mount to track the stars. The sensor in an astrocam captures a lot more than your eyes can see. After stacking many hours of exposures and some processing the picture comes to life. And from very light polluted skies you can use narrowband filters which cut out a lot of light pollution.

Thank-You so much, Neil & Chuck! In addition to the states mentioned with dark sky parks, Michigan offers six dark sky preserves and three internationally designated Dark Sky Parks. Many of those are in the Upper Peninsula where it has very few large cities. Auroras are often seen in the U.P. as well. Maybe Mr. Tafreshi will visit one of these parks one day, if he has not already. The images he's contributed over the years are just spectacular. Wonderful guest!

Try to rest well. For back in the mid/late 60's, the world was falling apart. In the 70's, the world was falling apart as well. The 80's... the world was certainly falling apart. In the 90's... well, the 90's was a special decade. Less falling apart and more experiencing life itself. Early 2000's, we could have swore that the world was falling apart at any moment. Basically, all of us have been consistently wrong in our presumption/assumption regarding the world. The events of today will too work itself out. It may cost some lives, require intentional effort to improve, and cost who knows how much money. But the human species has come way too far to simply choose to give up and let everything come to an end. It sure appears to be a bleak future on the way. But remember, we thought and felt the same over and over again, only to be proven otherwise with time. When you reach my age, you will begin hearing the new batch of people talking about how the world is falling apart. By then you will have some real life experience under your belt to offer that younger generation. It'll be a bumpy ride, but our metaphorical suspension will hold up in the long run.

Watch more stuff like this on the internet. There is so much more stuff that is an "oasis" than there is about the world falling apart. It's just that on the internet the sensational gets a bigger lens. And the falling apart stuff gets unduly magnified. Except for the GOP, that's definitely falling apart, lol. JUST kidding, settle down.

First I wanna say that seeing the whole night sky without any light pollution, with all the starts is an amazing experience. I hiked in Sierra Nevada, CA, and it was a truly touching view. I suggest pretty much everyone to travel away from city lights, and see the beauty of stars at least once. I live in Finland, and have seen aurora borealis, also known as Northern Lights, a few times. Sometimes even near my home, with city lights and all. Additionally there's a Finnish very famous hymn called "Täällä pohjantähden alla" which means under the Pole star. Can be found from youtube with the name in quotes.

This is regarding the “lightning ball” you were discussing. I have seen this lightning ball about 2 times during 2000-2002. As you mentioned, it moved and most of the time light-red or light pink in colour. Size was a bit bigger than a basket ball. One of those lightning balls formed on the wet floor in our front veranda, entered the house, through the door and rolled over the living room in a straight line for nearly 10 meters until it disappeared under the stand we had a tube CRT-TV. Obviously, it damaged the TV even it wasn’t connected to electricity. All of this happened in like 5-6 seconds which left my family in shock. There was a black burnt mark on the floor where it disappeared (the floor was cement and polished with floor polish. My family and I were safely sitting on a sofa over a big floor rug). The second time it occurred, I was just looking at the heavy rain, standing in the doorway, as the rain was filling the front yard converting it to a small pond when suddenly a lightning struck and a lightning ball formed on the surface of that water ( simultaneously). This time it moved about for few seconds and disappeared. Luckily, it didn’t travel as I was standing very close to the water. I never saw a lightning ball after those two incidents. I’m from Sri Lanka and we get thunderstorms very often, mostly in evenings. So, I can assure you it’s not a myth. I think it’s a rare phenomenon that requires multiple attributes for a lightning ball to form in such a way. Both times it was a bit bigger than a basketball. I think if you ever see one, you will be in such awe, and forget even you have a camera on your hand! It will be too late to realise what you’re seeing to click 📸.

I’ve experienced ‘ all lightning’ back in the mid 1960s. A storm was coming and I was sent upstairs to check that he windows were closed. As I reached the top step I saw a transparent fuzzy greenish object move horizontally between our house and our neighbors. We had woods behind our houses and while this thing seemed to move much slower than normal lightning, as it entered the woods, I couldn’t see this, a very loud clap of thunder occurred. My sister who was following me up the stairs must have leaped the final top steps and had grasped me around the legs! It happened so quickly that I can’t recall more details that this. The lightning hit one large tree and took off the top half then went about 90 degrees to the right and hit a second tree and split it to the ground then scattered off hitting several trees high up their trunks . It was something to see!

The best picture I've ever taken of the night sky was of the blood lunar eclipse in May of 2022. I was living in a particularly dark area of the Yucatan Peninsula; almost zero light pollution. I finagled my phone camera over my telescope and got some decent shots. They were actually published in Live Science😁 Light pollution should be brought to the forefront imo. Just wanted to add my thanks to Dr. deGrasse Tyson and his colleagues for the always informative and engaging topics.

One thing that viewers can do locally is advocate for shades to be placed on street lights that reflect light downward and limit flood lights to illuminate smaller areas. Many cities have already installed light shades along highways and streets but compelling commercial sites and home owners to do the same is a bit harder. We need international co-operation to force private companies to remove satellites once their usefulness has expired, or they cease to function. The "star link" system is especially troublesome as they project that they will need a thousand satellites to make the system work well. Already several dozen of the links have failed and they have no way to de-orbit them.

There are other reasons to drop the color temperature of LED lights. The biggest one concerns automobile headlights. The new projector lamps on cars are at a temperature similar to what is being talked about here. Our eyes are designed to use a more Yellow (lower color temp) light. Anyone that has driven at night and been blinded by the new headlamps can tell you they don't work safely for all drivers. I spent a lot of time in the 1960's out in the country where there were no street lights and light pollution. The amount of stars I could see was amazing. Dr. Tyson, thank you for doing these programs. This is how Science should be taught. Interesting, concise explanations that are fun to listen to.

What I have really noticed in the last 20 years is the huge increase in satellites. It is getting very hard to take long exposures using star tracking without getting satellites streaking around. Last year I watched four satellites, at different altitudes, all cross each other at a single point.

That’s true about long exposure moonlit photos. I once took a long exposure photo of my yard during a full moon and the picture looked like a bright overcast day. I’ve also experienced that sudden bright star that disappears phenomenon! A couple times actually. The only explanation I could come up with was that it was a meteor aimed right at me, since a supernova would have lasted far longer and a reflective satellite would have been moving across the sky. Very cool!

One easy and cost effective way to decrease globabl warrming is to increase the albedo of the planet simply by putting particles in the air at high altitude. This could be accomplished by commercial aircraft that would release the particle and overtime it would increase the albedo and lowering the temperature. It would take tons of particles but at high eartth orbit they would last for aeons and could be gathered if it gets too cool.

Any modern DSLR or Mirrorless camera with a F1.2, F1.4, F2.8. lens You can capture great wide shots of the sky, provided you can get to a dark area. If you want to shoot the Moon, remember that the moon is a sunlit object. It is sunny all the time on the moon. So shoot the moon with a similar exposure you would shoot any daytime seen on Earth. If you want the stars AND the moon, then take an long exposure to capture the stars and a short exposure to capture the moon and composite in a photo program like Photoshop.

Was in Mongolia mid September. Beautiful sky and could see the Milky way as there was very little light pollution. Then I saw a steak green of lights moving and thenb they disappeared. It was not UFO, turn out after some research was the satellites launched by Starling a few days ago. Took many pics and a tripod is always useful. If only I knew then about using exposure less than 30 secs

It was overwhelming

my phone doesn't have the best camera, it's old and I live in an apartment complex where the light pollution is so bad, you can generally see a few planets and the moon. You have to move in order to see any stars. .....and, from our parking lot while, yes, this one particular picture I took does look like a picture of a white spot, then the same white spot with a black spot on it....but, in reality: it's Jupiter, then Io making an eclipse on Jupiter 👍 Even that low quality was cool to get! Also, I grew up outside the city and was used to seeing the northern lights, tons of stars, constellations and even a comet once. The milky way was always my favorite thing to stare at! ....now, I still can't complain, really. Yeah, I miss the stars...a ton.... but, I do get to see a lot of satellites, which is kinda cool...and, for some reason, I have seen at least a dozen meteors since being in the city! I only saw one my whole life.... then, as an adult and living here: I've seen many and of so many different colors! One was super low and lit up the valley I live in with a surreal green glow, before it went behind the houses in front of me (and in front of thr cliff behind said houses. The cliff is 3 miles from me, to put how close it really was into perspective) and was out of sight. It didn't make the news, didn't last long and was right over the river....so, I'm not sure how many people saw that! That's pretty cool!

My advice to Neil would be to avoid those shooting stars that are angling for you.
