The whole price is right game aspect is fun if you just want to game the system but for guessing the price, I think the 'closest price' should be the way. The point here is to see how ridiculous these prices are and that has to be based on actually guessing rather than one team guesses a price and the other just tries to win. Make both sides guess and share thoughts and keep their numbers private without price is right rules so that there is only incentive to think about the car and its price rather than also think "What are the other guys guessing?"

Dealerships got their start so car manufacturers could market their cars to random places across the globe without any of the financial risk or trouble associated with owning sales facilities everywhere. @@cenciende9401 In the USA, we have laws governing price gouging or when a seller takes advantage of a situation to raise prices beyond what is considered fair and reasonable. It is encouraged that, in certain situations, like excessively high dealer markups, that you report that dealer to the local state's Consumer Protection Agency. Here in my state, the Attorney General's Office investigates these reports. You can also report price gouging to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) Bureau of Consumer Protection, although they are Federal so not really tasked with issues a state can handle.
@idkalan00
@idkalan00 Жыл бұрын
@Matthew Bauer the thing is the car dealerships in various states have successfully lobbied against their business being applicable to anti-price gouging laws. States also refuse to go after dealerships because of the state taxes they get from car sales. So the higher the car's price, the higher the sales tax. You can complain to your local state about a store selling the $0.99 cans of Arizona iced tea for $5 and it would count as price gouging, but you can't do that with dealerships.

In my country, all cars that labeled as PREMIUM are taxed by another 200%, e.g. Mercedes C class lowest variation was cost 20k Euro in Germany, in here was about 60k Euro excluded transportation and On The Road fee (adding to almost 70k Euro). More premium brand will be another tax included and you wont get premium cars unless you are either very rich or having successful career to buying it. Luckily, common cars like Toyota, Honda and Suzuki are less affected by tax and affordable for most cars except if you go for high-end brand like Infiniti, Lexus and Acura, thats another story

@@nickpurdy69 I think that is an incorrect way of saying it. I would say it moves the fun from that _why_ factor, into a competition between the people/teams playing it, in a method that is very related to capitalism..... undercutting the competition. Which is why Price Is Right rules are fun, because they are actively playing against each other, which anyone on earth can relate to without any knowledge of what they are actually trying to guess the price on.

@@whyjnot420 if one team says 40k then it's just a game of higher or lower. That's it. I'd rather hear WHY they think it should be 40k or why one team thinks it should be 45k because of the area, car, miles etc...

@@nickpurdy69 Personally I think that kind of stuff is better when it is more focused on the topic, regardless if it is delivered in a funny or serious manner. *Why* dealerships are doing what they are doing, or at least why they think they are doing it, is certainly worthy of exploration. But given that it really is a serious topic. Keeping the focus on it, by not using a gameshow format in the first place, would imo be more effective. Thinking about things, perhaps this should have been done in a two part format. One part as it was done here, with the game show. Then another focused on the events in the real world. Delivered with the snark common to Donut videos. Maybe there is a disconnect here worthy of note though: These are car people talking about cars. The Price Is Right works as a game show as well as it does, because it is everyday people rather than people who have (at least somewhat) detailed knowledge about what they are bidding on. But at the same time, I can see why someone could argue that this makes it even better here. Regardless, on the objective side of things, calling out the dealerships until they stop doing this BS is what is really important. One way or another.

People get all upset at the dealers for charging these prices but you 100% have to be angry at the people buying them as well. If people weren’t willing to pay for them they wouldn’t sell them. This has always been the case. Supply and demand leads the way. People go nuts on exclusivity and are happy to pay for it. Also I feel really sorry for these people paying these inflated prices because they are going to be stuck with the payment on a vehicle worth a fraction of what they paid when this bubble pops.

No point getting angry at stupid. If someone is dumb enough to pay 3X sticker price for an exponentially depreciating asset, then I say let them burn their money. Who we all should be mad at is the FED, for printing trillions of dollars we didn't need and causing inflation to rise to the levels not seen since the 70's and 80's.

@@powertothesheeple5422 100% agree with you. It’s insane yes but if people didn’t do it it wouldn’t be happening. Same thing with the housing market. It’s just as outrageous. The bubble is bigger than it’s been in decades and when it pops it’s going to be very VERY rough.

It's the same on the bottom end with labor too. Consumers blindly pay the least amount of money for products even if it means buying from companies who exploit their workers to no end, and some even try to justify not tipping service industry workers when they aren't willing to support ethical businesses that paid fair wages, when their consumers choices drove ethics out of any businesses. This is what happens when people want to take advantage of capitalism for their own gains but want none of the responsibilities on either side. The people that need these cars the most are the ones that need to commute to their exploitative workplaces, while the wealthier work from home folks are comfortably paying the inflated prices for a toy.

@@Agent_Missouri dont feel bad for those people who pay way too much. Most of the time they only do such stupid things with money cause they have plenty of it so they don't care.

@@Agent_Missouri Agreed.... But there will always, always be people wiling to pay whatever price for something - Apple knows this all too well. In this specific instance it has no bearing on me since I will likely never buy a new vehicle due to their instant depreciation. I am willing to bet that EV's will depreciate even more than ICE vehicles since the technology will be ever increasing and batteries degrade with usage regardless of how you maintain them.

On the same day I bought a new Odyssey EX-L in January, a 3 year old low mileage Oddysey EX-L was $6k more expensive at a different dealership. That's with the $3k bump I paid over the MSRP.

I was in the market for an STI and I went to a dealer and saw that they had a 2021 for $58,000 and I was flabbergasted. I told them that this vehicle new, the previous year, was only $50,000. I went home and looked online for STIs and found that they were all in the high $50s to $60s thousand range... They shot up higher than MSRP

Mazda dealerships are the only ones not marking up in my area, don’t know if that means they’re hurting for sales, just moving a lot of inventory while also gaining goodwill or if corporate is keeping them in check.

I work for Mazda, it's mostly just the culture within the dealership networks that encourage taking care of the customer from day one. We are one of the smallest manufacturers in the world and cannot afford to swindle the Goodwill of the customer base we've taken decades to cultivate, to make some quick bucks now. We are struggling to sell cars because we are struggling to even get any from overseas. Even then we will not take advantage of the people buying cars now!

I am a Mazda sales representative and we do not believe that is a good business practice for earning your business in the long run. When those people go to trade their vehicles next time and the market goes back down, they will be so upside-down and there will not be a way of getting out of that car.

@@MegaAmazing19 we are already seeing a trend again of being very low on new cars. Per the meeting this past Friday, we are bound to run out of new inventory in June if this pace keeps up. I'm in the southeast.
