@@cenciende9401 In the USA, we have laws governing price gouging or when a seller takes advantage of a situation to raise prices beyond what is considered fair and reasonable. It is encouraged that, in certain situations, like excessively high dealer markups, that you report that dealer to the local state's Consumer Protection Agency. Here in my state, the Attorney General's Office investigates these reports. You can also report price gouging to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) Bureau of Consumer Protection, although they are Federal so not really tasked with issues a state can handle.
@idkalan00 Жыл бұрын
@Matthew Bauer the thing is the car dealerships in various states have successfully lobbied against their business being applicable to anti-price gouging laws. States also refuse to go after dealerships because of the state taxes they get from car sales. So the higher the car's price, the higher the sales tax. You can complain to your local state about a store selling the $0.99 cans of Arizona iced tea for $5 and it would count as price gouging, but you can't do that with dealerships.

But given that it really is a serious topic. Keeping the focus on it, by not using a gameshow format in the first place, would imo be more effective. Thinking about things, perhaps this should have been done in a two part format. One part as it was done here, with the game show. Then another focused on the events in the real world. Delivered with the snark common to Donut videos. Maybe there is a disconnect here worthy of note though: These are car people talking about cars. The Price Is Right works as a game show as well as it does, because it is everyday people rather than people who have (at least somewhat) detailed knowledge about what they are bidding on. But at the same time, I can see why someone could argue that this makes it even better here. People get all upset at the dealers for charging these prices but you 100% have to be angry at the people buying them as well. If people weren’t willing to pay for them they wouldn’t sell them. This has always been the case. Supply and demand leads the way. People go nuts on exclusivity and are happy to pay for it. Also I feel really sorry for these people paying these inflated prices because they are going to be stuck with the payment on a vehicle worth a fraction of what they paid when this bubble pops.
@powertothesheeple54222 жыл бұрын
No point getting angry at stupid. If someone is dumb enough to pay 3X sticker price for an exponentially depreciating asset, then I say let them burn their money. It's the same on the bottom end with labor too. Consumers blindly pay the least amount of money for products even if it means buying from companies who exploit their workers to no end, and some even try to justify not tipping service industry workers when they aren't willing to support ethical businesses that paid fair wages, when their consumers choices drove ethics out of any businesses. This is what happens when people want to take advantage of capitalism for their own gains but want none of the responsibilities on either side. The people that need these cars the most are the ones that need to commute to their exploitative workplaces, while the wealthier work from home folks are comfortably paying the inflated prices for a toy.

I agree with you. It’s shameless, bold-faced greed. And the dealerships act as if they’re ENTITLED to that kind of money for the cars. When I point out that my older cars have better materials and design and gas-mileage, they have no response. So, a worse car with a higher sticker-price…this is opposite of value when I get more and pay less than what it’s worth. Conclusion: I’m holding on to my cars, treating them as my last cars for this lifetime, and investing the money in myself through vacations and with dinners and in stocks of company that return more dollars to me for the ones I send them. In other words, I won’t reward a slithering, slimy, greedy person. They’ll have to wait for a fool to do this. And , news flash: the reason the prices are so high is that are enough fools who will pay that price.
@jamesdonoghue79672 жыл бұрын
It's a very emotional issue. Dealership greed is subjective. What is anything really worth? As much as someone is willing to pay for it. When the supply curve meets the demand curve - THAT'S the price. It sucks but if nitwits are willing to pay for it the dealership has no incentive to lower price

Sooner or later, dealerships will be a thing of the past... At least, they will be as we think of them. Many manufacturers are doing the "price guarantee" sales model, especially here in Australia and that matters for the big markets. Just like McDonalds trial run their global business models here, such as McCafe, the car companies are doing the same thing with the intention of rolling it out once the bugs are ironed out of their fixed price sales models. Sounds like a good idea while the dealers are having a field day now... But when things go back to more normal conditions, we'll lose our ability to negotiate with the local business owner and eventually that money is going straight to the top of the corporate structure. If you think the dealers are taking advantage of the American people, at least that money stays in the town where the vehicle was sold, to a degree. When the negotiation is removed, that's going straight to the corporate HQ.
