@Miss Demeanor Only because many dealership failed to uphold MSRP and provide the lowest finance rate with full disclosure but let greed get in their way when people are in need of transportation; similar analogy as those who buy out all the toilet paper, surgical masks, sanitizer and wipes from local retail stores and sold them 3+ times the price on Amazon during Summer 2020. Luckily Amazon banned the sales of those greedy private sellers and then those retail stores banned the return for refund on these items. So some people are getting ripped off without a choice when transportation is essential in this country especially travelling 30 miles to work/school are considered normal distance in some states; and then these buyers are at risk of default and car repo because of higher than budgeted monthly payment, potential laid-off (Twitter, Meta, Carvana etc) , having negative equity on the car loan when used car price are now going back down...

Everyone knows they will all be replaced by clicklane. I've already seen clicklane starting to be tricks & games, but if they use this service effectively--there will be very few sales people, finance managers or even the deal managers. Clicklane also has the potential to erase Autotrader from their biz ops. This is a big deal. The tesla effect will erase all these jobs. There will be some, but mostly operations and service. the next thing will be to close physical locations, which will start soon. A lot of this has to do with interest rates & the slowdown of the economy--but more has to do with a shift to AI and Tesla--and to use the internet as the showroom and there will be no need to have dealers on every major road. This is why Store owners are bugging out. This isn't a downturn. It's a paradigm shift. This is also why carvana will not go bankrupt. It won't. They will be the last standing & will control used car pricing & delivery--many existing dealers will use them as the core & dump major parts of their used car operations. (Think tesla who do not do used cars).

First: you’re using data that is way behind the actual conditions of the market and overall you inner change profit per car with gross profit per car. The numbers you quoted aren’t happening. Second: I’m sure many struggling dealerships will try the old Add equipment trick as you suggested. That has close to zero chance to work this time because the only way it has ever worked in the past is if the bank or finance company would finance the equipment! I don’t think that will happen. Everything I can tell about the market, we’re in a repossession apocalypse almost! Banks and finance companies will all want more cash down to reduce the exposure, and not finance frivolous add-ons. Third: unfortunately, there’s been lots of dealerships who have been just getting by in the market with record sales and near 0% interest! As both of those key components have recently changed, there will be hundreds of dealerships that close up for good. The closings will be Exacerbated if there are also manufacturers/ who fail like they did in 2008 and 2009.

Okay, when will all this reported car market carnage going to reflect in lower used and new car prices…? Until then, all these doom videos are just inside baseball clickbait.
