Hot rods to aircooled 911s car designer Ian Callum's car collection - part 2
Welcome to The [Jonny Smith] Late Brake Show. This is part 2 of a candid chat with Jonny Smith's (aka CarPervert) friend ex Jaguar design boss. Whereas the first episode was more about Ian's life as a designer for Ford, Aston, Jaguar and other car makers, part 2 very much focuses on his eclectic car collection.
What does the guy who helped design the Ford RS200, the Escort RS Cosworth, Aston Martin DB7 and Vanquish actually drive? Quite a mix actually, and nearly always modified. Aside from the Porsche 914, Chevy C10 truck, Alfa Guilia GTV and Cal Look VW Beetle Karmann convertible Ian's car collection is almost never in one location.
Before he takes Jonny out in his lighty resto-modded 1970s Jaguar XJC Coupe, the pair pore over Ian's Porsche 993 RSR homage, a low mileage Aston Vanquish S, a tuned Triumph TR6 (the classic he drives more than anything else), his long-time owned late 1990s Austin Rover Mini Cooper, and the prototype Callum Design R-Reforged 25 bespoke Aston Vanquish.
The 1932 Ford 'deuce coupe' hot rod is his born-of-obsession project that he's rebuilt three times in 15 years. This was the car that he took to Jonny's wedding. As a hat tip to his previous employers he fitted the 32 Ford with Jaguar seats and a Ford racing V8 - the latter bought with staff discount!
During the road drive in his XJC Ian talks more about his designs whilst at Jaguar - like the XK, F-Type, iPace, F-Pace, XF and his first all-new design for them, the XJ. There's also mention of awards from a sweary Prince Philip, Iron Maiden, doing the Mille Miglia with Jay Leno and Brian Johnson from AC/DC's loud car habit. Naturally.
Stop. It's time for The Late Brake Show.

I am certain that the original Vanquish will a future classic - what a staggeringly beautiful car. I can’t tell you how much of an impact seeing that car on screen in Die Another Day had on my 8-year-old mind - it genuinely cemented my love of cars for life

Sure, the new Vanquish is even more beautiful. That said, this Callum Edition looks worse than both, sadly.

Hi Jonny, Congratulations for a super and very relaxed Interview with Ian. During the Interview in Part 1. You both made frequent references to many other vehicles, could I make a suggestion for the future. If a reference to a vehicle is made and is not actually in shot. Would it be possible to show a picture of the mentioned vehicle. I did recall from memory many of the ones mentioned but there were 4/5 I just could not picture in my mind. I do realise the extra time and effort during editing it would cause you all but i think it may be appreciated. (not full screen shots, just a small pop up maybe).

One of The! most interesting interview chats about car's as a whole, not just how expensive, fast and how much money it will make me ever anywhere. It helps to know a person in some form and this shows across in the 'chatting to a mate in a pub' scenario. Some of the questions you asked were so not the norm love that about you Jonny! Great interview fantastic varied car channel.

Loved it Jonny and I agree, cars should reflect your memories and experience with cars. I’ve worked on, maintained and sold cars and have great memories of Vauxhall, Opel, Honda, Ford, Volvo, Jaguar and Mercedes. I worked for a haulage firm maintaining a fleet of Mercedes trucks and trackter units, my boss drove a beautiful old Mercedes coupe that I alway wanted. This year, I’ve fulfilled this vision and now a Mercedes owner.

I’ve always loved the XJC. There was a posher Daimler version too. They were just so exotic, at least to the 9 year old me, or whatever I was at the time! I still have a XJC brochure that I picked up at the Birmingham Motor Show. It has a wonderful section in it where they’ve printed sections of the V12 engine on separate clear acetate pages, so you can literally take the engine apart layer by layer and see it’s inner workings. These days manufacturers generally talk less and less about the engineering that goes into their cars (certainly finding technical info on websites can prove a challenge) and I think that’s a shame. At the risk of sounding like the old fart I am, I remember when even mainstream cars sold on their engineering strengths and not just whether you can hook your phone up to it and use Apple Car Play. This has been a fascinating two parter. Interviews with other car guys: designers, engineers, you name it, would be great.

I agree - the XJC was a beautiful car. I remember as a young lad, the fear of a visit to the dentist was lessened when he gave me a lift to his surgery in his British racing green XJC! Unlike Ian, I thought the black vinyl roof worked well.

@@TheLateBrakeShow Yes i know what you mean its a balancing act i guess its down to having something poignant that excites they're interest every 30 seconds or less with some people lol and then again not loosing the more focused intellect on the subject who is going to take in every word come what may, may be you could ask them for any video footage or pics of them back in the days and insert the extra media to give the viewer some short breaks to tweak they're interest even more on the subject surrounding the person or even ask them to bring an object of interest along favorite steering wheel e.t.c that can then be a link to the inserted short clips all gelling together . just an idea

When I was a student, some time in the mid nineties, my mates and I took a ferry to the UK for a holiday. While we were waiting to drive on board the boat, someone parked next to us in an exotic looking little hatchback - very unusual and futuristic styling... Hang on - was that a *FORD* badge on that thing?! I just had to get out and get the story from the bloke driving it! So it turned out to be a pre production example from the factory in Germany... of a Puma! Nice bloke seemed quite happy to reveal more than he should to a bunch of drooling young lads, and liked the reaction we gave it. If I recall correctly the Puma was a radical foretaste of the "New Edge" design language just before its mainstream launch in the Focus (replacing the Escort). So it really was a shocking new look turning up in that car park. Edit: I've looked it up and the Ka was just before the Puma, so it wasn't the first New Edge design, but still pretty exotic at the time.

Living in the vicinity of Dunton and having a Dad work there I also had similar reactions to a lot of the stuff seen on the roads around here. I remember for a good deal before they were released seeing the current and previous shape Mondeos tooling around the local area, and seeing pre-production Transits just sat inside when going with my dad to pick up bits from work after school one day. Occasionally you'd also get to see cars in press camo driving about. It always made me laugh because you could tell where the managers at Dunton lived in the local area because you'd be going down the road and there'd be a American Fusion sat on a driveway in Essex (insanely weird and rare car here for anyone from the states) and down another street there'd be a Focus with a modified exhaust with the mounting brackets for emissions testing equipment on it. Good times. I remember one day my dad came back from a work visit to the facility where they were wrapping up production on the Puma Racing and he just had a box of extra badges. We had a Hoover Racing and a Racing Fridge at one point. Now I think the only one left is the one stuck to his toolbox in the garage.
