I'm always a sucker for the uncool unloved underdog of cars but since childhood I've always preferred this front end over the v8 vantage Oscar India thing with its pontiac looking headlights. I'm now aware of dynamic differences and I still love this one more. ✌

They are rather different beasts indeed - even just from the aesthetics point of view. Just because of the design of the front and that is altered the entire car changes. Thanks for tuning in!

Hi Niels, great design appreciation of one of William Town's finest creations. I was very very young when these early DBSs were current, and already a complete design snob! It really annoyed me when Aston Martin adopted the twin headlight arrangement in the early 70s. Almost ruined the car, and made it look a Camaro. The quad-headlights-in-the-grille approach is a design trope that I would have liked to see return sometime for Aston; Zagato tried incorporating it into their pair of DBS rebodies a few years ago, and I personally think the DBX would have looked far better (and less like a Cayenne) with this treatment. To be honest, the wire wheels ALWAYS looked out of place, even when new; the GKN alloys introduced with the DBS V8 were much nicer. However nostalgia for wire wheels has made them look more appealing as the years go by. One element of the DBS and later V8 variants which was not well resolved, and seemed to get bigger and worse as the got older, was the clumsy blacked out front and rear valances slung under the car to hide the front radiators, and rear silencers. The tyres also got larger and more balloon like, even when other supercars like the Countach were adopting low profile items. I actually came very close to buying one about 20 years ago, at a time when you could pick up one that had seen a very expensive restoration for about 20% of the cost. I still kick myself to this day now this car, once the cheapest way into AM ownership, has skyrocketed out of reach.

Thanks for tuning in and hsaring your story! Much appreciated! Indeed, the clumsy blacked out front and rear valances slung under the car to hide the front radiators, and rear silencers are "not ideal" to say the least... But in these days "solutions" like these were often used.

I feel that bentley should have put more conservative rims on the arnage , it was a really good looking car , but those rims do not do it justice , as for the dbs i read somwhere that william townes designed the bonnet [hood] without the scoop/vent but was overulled by david brown who insisted on having one , brown btw had his own 4 door lagonda version , this can be seen on you tube and google image

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for tuning in! We currently have an Arnage in from the first series with smaller wheels. To be fair it really is weakening the stance and with that the design of the car. Interesting story about the hood scoop! Sometimes a bit more drama is needed…

That would have worked so well on this car. The combo of old leather, a bit of oil and metal...
