To me the D3 is the design successor to the E38 7-Series. I don't know if you'd agree on that but this generation A8; especially with the split-grille just reminds me so much of the E38. Both beautiful elegant designs.

Thanks you for tuning and in and sharing your view point in these cars. Indeed, the DB11 has nice elements, great proportions being the most important one. I am an educated Industrial Designer, working as design & architecture journalist. I drove a V50 for several years - mostly for design reasons. This car is designed inside and outside with extraordinary consistency, you can look at it from any angle and understand the shapes and lines. Everything makes sense, the reminiscences to the 140/240 are just right. We went to IKEA with it once to haul some Billy shelves, and the flat packages fitted so perfectly into the storage space that it cant be by chance. Changing lightbulbs in the headlights was pure joy - no tools needed, you could take out the whole headlight assembly after pulling a kind of "tent peg", pull the electric connector and sit back into the car to change the bulb in the dry. A brilliant but obsolete design solution, as bulbs have been replaced by led... The thin center console and its controls - 4 knobs + numeric keyboard - were lovely. the only design mistake was the painful lack of storage space in the front (dash/doors). Unfortunately, design is not everything. The electronics were very unreliable, the ride was dull and the 1.6 D Engine woefully underpowered.
@NielsvanRoijDesign3 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your view as an industrial design and architect. In many ways this was one of the best modern Volvo designs - definately at its days. Way better than the S80 and V70 - those indeed were bigger - and had lovely interiors - but the exterior desig nwas painfully poor compared to these gems! Sorry to hear about the electronics - not sure if that is a common issue. The higher output engines definately drove a lot better - the D5 and T5 were lovely little powerful cars and also a regular 2.4 petrol is a grwta fit to these. Thanks for tuning in - more Volvo videos on this channel!

In hindsight, the exterior looks absolutely great stock (although the tyres aren't the original dimension and the exhaust tail isn't original either). Back in the day, everyone would change the rims and lower it. As it was a bit of a rocking chair, lowering and thus stiffening it wasn't the worst idea. The stitching on my gear lever wasn't red. Don't mind at all, though. Keep in mind that this little cookie box had electric windows and central locking in a time when you had to pay extra to get these in your Golf.
