Great video with really good "insider" knowledge! However, EVs are re-writing the rules on development schedules too, simply because they are highly parallel, intinsically scaleable, and require so much less calibration, optimisation and critically homologation (no tailpipe emissions nor OBD!!) With EV products, we can have a new BIW in less than 3 years, sometimes as little as two for a lower volume segment platform 🙂

This is true, and although complexity in the vehicle is increasing rapidly, the power of simulation for test and development work is growing even faster. I remember there being fleets of hundreds of development vehicles for each new model, now there are just a few. The rate of change is astonishing.

I recently went to a seminar regarding the future of car sales and development with a group of leading experts. And they have some really interesting thoughts and the reasoning behind them I would gladly share.

The problem with EVs is chemistry. The electric part is fine. A 1,000 pound battery is okay for those who can be tethered, but it's got an expiration date of about a decade. The rest of the vehicle could last 20 or 30 years. Many Americans can only afford 10-year old cars.
