but the passengers are insulated from the car metal, by wearing shoes, rubber mats, etc. so you need to touch the car metal to discharge and make best use of the grounding strap. A better way, would be use ESD mats at the feet of passengers and also connect to metal & ground strap. then you are always grounded while travelling & discharge as you go. you can add this to your suggestions. great video, thanks.

It's useless. The car is always effectively grounded through its tires (tire rubber is slightly conductive). One wire makes no difference. What separates the charge is your body rubbing against the insulators in the car (seat cover materials).

When I was a child, in the 70's, I remenber ALL the cars having this strap hanging at the back of the cars. I don't know when exactly, this feature disepeared.
