The "X" on the train car does NOT mean transportation. It designates that it is owned by a private company.
@beeble20033 жыл бұрын
And UFIX has nothing to do with Utah: it's Utility Fuels Inc., who are based in Texas.
@beeble20032 жыл бұрын
Though, having said that, "X" doesn't mean it's a private company. Most railroads in the US are private companies -- the main exception is Amtrak, along with the various city- and state-owned commuter networks. X means the car is owned by a company that is not a common-carrier railroad. Often, that means that the car is owned by a customer of the railroad (e.g., Cargill or Archer Daniels Midland) or a lease company (e.g., TTX, UTLX, TILX). However, Department of Defense cars are marked DODX and they're certainly not a private company. Conversely, the Cumberland Mine Railroad is CMYX. Even though it's a railroad, it's not a common carrier -- it doesn't accept general traffic and only carries is own cargo.

Man, i been trying to soak up all his knowledge, Hobo Stobe's, & Telestations before I embark on my first journey! I loved a hard scrabble life, & spent 17yrs in prison, but been out since 2014, with NO PLANS on ever going back! 💯 I also lived on the streets for awhile, in my addictions & while i was on tree lamb, lived through minus degree temps in winter in Chicago & Reno, & slept in the Sierra Nevada desert in the dead on summer, so I know physically I can take it, mentally too, but there's SO MUCH to learn! Where can I find the best knowledge to learn before I go on my first trip? Love your vids too Colby, my wife is gonna travel with me also, how would we look for another couple to travel with, since were not the sharpest on catching out?

Shoestring tell me if you've ever heard of this happening. So my father worked for WPRR from the early 70's until he retired. You talking about boxcar doors reminded me sorry he told me. He told me that occasionally a flat wheel on a boxcar or even just thousands of miles the door would get worn out and when someone would open the latch the door would fall off the boxcar and land on the guy killing him. Have you ever heard of that happening?

Missed this one before and came back to it. I used to do a lot of rail tracing in my old job; in the late 80's and early 90's, there were automated systems for BN (pre-BNSF), ATSF, CSX, SP and several others, plus there were service reps that I talked with on a daily basis. Wish I'd kept those numbers. If I remember right, BN Phone Trace had the best one - you didn't have to use the letters above each digit on the phone to enter the prefix. I also remember that there was one railroad (I won't name which one) where you had to remember to enter the area code instead of 1-800. A coworker made that mistake one night while he was on speakerphone, and the next thing we knew, we heard this deep voice say, "You have reached the Gay Action Hotline." I swear, this really happened!

Looks like somebody posted the answer and deleted it, so here it is again. They're ballast cars and the solar panels power GPS units and radio gear that allow the cars to be programmed to dump ballast exactly where it's needed, and avoid dumping it on, e.g., open deck bridges and trestles.
@eatonbeaver60833 жыл бұрын
The reporting marks indicate the owner and/or operator of the car. Railcar marks ending with an X indicate they are owned by a company that is NOT a railroad. For example UP marks include UP, MP, WP, CHTT, CMO while non railroad company marks include TILX (Trinity Industries Leasing), UTLX (Union Tank Car Co), SHPX (Used to be Shippers Car Line), CCLX (Crystal Car Lines), TTX (Trailer Train Inc.) etc.

There aren't enough people giving useful information like you're doing. Lots of trainhoppers act like information gatekeepers. I realize there are good and bad reasons for this, but sometimes I just want to ask questions to build up the confidence to do it, but I seldom get answers. I don't exactly have a *need* to ride trains, but I want to be able to travel with some reliability using this method, but my biggest fear is getting on the wrong train and becoming hopelessly lost. I could handle being late or early for my desired destination, but the possibility of getting stranded scares me.
@jwc3o23 жыл бұрын
a thought: if a train brought you there, it can also take you away again. just always be sure to have extra food/water & patience - with both the trains & yourself - to accommodate the possibility of error. even stuck on a siding in the middle of nowhere, it'll get used again as a passing track before too long &, if nothing stops & things get absolutely beyond endurance into emergency, you can flag a passing train: from the "Canadian Rail Operating Rules" handbook, rule 12, "Hand Signals", section (a) part (vii) in full: "Any object waved violently by anyone on or near the track is a signal to stop." note "by anyone". also note: this is an emergency privilege not to be abused. advice: ditch the fear in favour of Adventures In Logistics 1o1.
