I grew up in Hanna, graduated South Central HS in '81. Move away right outta school, haven't been back. Wish I would have know about this trestle, would have loved to have explored it with you as a kid! Good video.

@@jimihendrix1575 Nice! Hanna is right on the Pennsylvania Railroad mainline! Chicago to Philadelphia and NYC. The famous "Broadway Limited" passenger train used this. The line is still active but barely. Another line once went through Hanna. A New York Central line from South Bend and on to Illinois . That line was torn up around 2000 or maybe earlier.
@jimihendrix15757 күн бұрын
@@spaceghost8995 Wow! The Broadway Limited! I never knew that. There was a double mainline Penn Central track that ran parallel to highway 30, then a seldom used single track that crossed highway 30 and crossed the PennCentral tracks in town. I never saw a train on that single track line the entire time I lived there! Thanks for the info!

@@jimihendrix1575 That's right. That single track was called "The Kankakee Belt Route". South Bend,Walkerton,Hamlet,Knox ,North Judson, San Pierre to Illinois.

"Railroading on the Wabash Fourth District" describes the history of this line, both its construction and its later demolition. I saw it in a South Bend library and bought a copy shortly after. This bridge is shown in the book as it was in 1987, definitely much clearer on the west side of the bridge, but also without tracks.

@@stephenwhite546 Yes! I deliver loads up to Posen and Blue Island and I see CSX trains on it. The Elsdon segment of the GT is now on lease to CSX from Griffith to Blue Island. GT (CN) now runs 90% of their trains from Griffith up to Kirk yard in Gary via the old EJ&E line .

The old Wabash 1st District. Def was a decent rail line in it's day. I admire your perseverence getting to that trestle! I remember fighting overgrowth and wasps(!) on the wooden railroad bridge of the old PRR Eel River at S. Whitley IN in the 70's. Got my photo tho!😂 Really enjoyed watching this! Thanks!

So... where you're at is Wabash Bridge 1620 at MP 758.36. And yes it's where is crosses over the GTW South Bend Sub. KOP is special because NYC, NKP, and Wabash all had something to do with transport to final destination. The KOP had its own dedicated engines for switching. To get permissions in the area you had a CP at Crocker (Chesterton) and Dillion (west of Walkerton) I believe. I could be confusing it with NKP). If you're looking for the next field trip. The double track tressle for the Erie is still in existence East of Bass Lake. 41.1691740, -86.5354101. There's also a switch tower for the Monon. 2 or 3 miles NW of LaCrosse, IN. My favorite place to look for remains is at CP Pine its near North Liberty, IN. Its a Wye track where Wabash used to hook up with the NJI&I. Pine is special cause it is where my Grandparents used to hide out as kids. There was a freight weigh scale and such. The Wye is now on private property one day, I hope to gain permissions and take my grandpa back there.

@@evanbaker8825 Yes yes that EL bridge near Bass Lake will be used on the rail trail when they complete it! I biked from N. Judson to Ora on it last month. I hope they get the funding to build to Rochester where it will join that very same NKP trail!

@@spaceghost8995 Did you ever get to North Judson back in the day when all the railroad diamonds were there? The tower Operator's were generally amiable to a visit from respectful fans, and you couldn't beat the variety of action! Geez I'm showing my age here aren't I?😀
@spaceghost8995Ай бұрын
@b3j8 No I never did. I live only 30 miles from Judson but I never witnessed it's heyday. Hard to believe FOUR RRs all crossed there. New York Central,Pennsylvania,Erie Lackawanna and Chesapeake &Ohio !!
@b3j8Ай бұрын
@@spaceghost8995 Well, I cant say I saw it in it's heyday(I'm not THAT old). I got there in 1975. By then the party was nearly over for the EL, the little used ex-NYC Kankakee Line, and the Panhandle as Conrail would axe all 3. Still, the day I went, action on both the Panhandle and C&O was good. And the Erie threw in westbound freight lead by an Alco C-424, a smoky RS-3, GP-40 trio! God I still miss the EL!
@spaceghost8995Ай бұрын
@b3j8 Well said. I was born in 1963. I do recall when suddenly I started seeing Conrail locos instead of Penn Central on the mainline through Laporte. We used to hop slow C&O grain trains that would run from Lacrosse or Union Mills through LP up to New Buffalo. That line now is gone between UM and NB!

@@mattstarr8203 Yes it did. One small section of the old Wabash is still intact in downtown Gary. There is a very short segment that services a customer called U.S. Sugars . The Wabash remnant connects it to the old Michigan Central line which is now owned by CSX and is fairly active.
