10 year warranties might sound comforting, but what happens in reality if you experience a major drivetrain failure (engine or gearbox) and the service centre advises there is a 3-6 month wait on a replacement part? The inconvenience of the duration you are forced to endure whilst waiting for the repair would be extremely stressful for the car owner and their family. I believe all car manufacturers should by LAW be forced to guarantee in their warranties that engine and transmission failures will be fixed within 28 days and the affected car owner will be provided a free courtesy car whilst their car is being repaired. That would bring peace of mind!

My aunt had a new 2024 Ford Explorer and the battery quit on her in the first 90 days of ownership. She was told that they would have to order a new one and it would be up to three weeks before it arrived, but probably just 10-14 days. She had to be jumped off to return home and wait. After a couple of more months she traded it to another brand because of her dealership experience.

Great fair review. I bought one. So far so good. I did lots of research on similar SUVs and you can literally find a thousand things people don't like about every one of them. In the end the Kia was the best value for the money and it does have great reliability ratings. Try not to get too hung up on the "dislikes", most are opinion and that's fine.

It’s a fantastic car and is an insane value for the money, as someone that sees 50-100 owners any given year, everyone loves their Telly. @@ChrisDavis333 I have own two Kias (Soul and Sorento). The Soul was actually a pretty decent car that I never had issues with (only kept it to 60k though). The Sorento on the other hand was a pain. Yes it did started leaking oil at 71K miles and I was the dreaded 4 cyl engine that has been failing but I kept having nagging issues with the door handles coming off, brake lights kept burning out, windshield fluid reservoir had a leak, etc. I had it for 6 years and I was tired of the constant minor things breaking along with concerns for the engine. That is why I don't recommend Kia/Hyundai. Do other car makes have issues? Sure but it's statistics. Toyota/Honda/Mazdas have consistently been better with longevity over time. It does seem like Toyota are having some new issues with the Tacoma but again, look over the span of 40 years. I wanted to get a Telluride but I just didn't want to chance it with another bad engine design or pesky issues.

I've been very close to buying a 2022 telluride with no recalls on the VIN and my wife just happened to find 2 people who have had bad experiences and now I'm second guessing myself even though the reviews on these is overwhelmingly positive. I'm stressing out!

I have a 2013 Genesis with the 3.8L engine that the Telluride is based on. This has been the most reliable car I've ever owned. The Lambda series V6 is under-stressed, simple, serviceable, and, for it's displacement, produces very respectable power and torque (335/300) in a naturally aspirated engine. They've been producing this short block and heads for over twelve years. I would have no hesitation about buying another car with this engine in it. YMMV

Yeah a lot of people in this comment section are literally just chatting shit.. I worked on and sold Tellurides, never met a disgruntled owner, seen 2020’s routinely cross 100k, it’s just not an old enough vehicle to see where it can actually go, like the Souls for example, I’ve seen them 175k 200k 220k. I think people are projecting that cursed 2.4l from the mid 2010’s onto modern Kia’s unfairly. There’s very few SUV’s on the market built like a Telluride and most of them are going to cost 20k-40k more and come with less features. The telluride is beloved by everyone I have ever met that owns one. Yet this comment section is ripping it to shreds like it’s a piece of shit, interesting, no owners.

2021 owner here, almost 60k miles, no issues. I think if you don't get a lemon (can happen with all manufacturers, maybe less so with honda/toyota), maintain them religiously and dump them after 100k, they will serve you well. amazing family car, ride is awesome

Even as you're not an owner, you have named the pluses and the minuses of the car so well, and taught me what the extra mode was for that child lock. Purchased a 2006 Kia Sportage and sold it in 2017 with 244,000 miles. Was FLAWLESS. Then in 2017, purchased a 2017 Hyundai Elantra and that too was FLAWLESS. Then sold the Elantra, which I regret doing, and purchased a 2020 Kia Telluride and it was nothing but problems. One year of non stop issues! Got rid of it after a year and purchased a Highlander in 2021 and never looked back.

Hyundai and Kia waited waaay to long to provide coverage in regards to the Theta engine failures due to manufacturing flaws. Then they stumbled when they finally did help. They lost some loyal customers. The company(s) is abolutely capable of building reliable engines. But they denied responsibility for a few years, and the assistance program was so confusing and strange.

I bought a new 2012 Kia Sorento with the 4 cyl GDI. At 70k miles the engine was knockings so bad it sounded like a diesel engine. Kia and Hyundai had a recall on these engines but they refused to honor the warranty. They gave me a free oil change! seriously! and extended the warranty on the engine. I got rid of the car and that was the 1st and last Kia/ Hyundai product I would ever buy!

When they vouch a 10 year warrnty sales pitching knowing their engines are trash and will deny anything worth while is more than enough information for a informed buyer. GDI only engines are thoes who are religious with their oil changes and will get carbon cleaned every 50k, but I bet only 5% of Kia keep up with that. With the prices now close to toyta-Hondas if your buying/financing it's fool to buy one. Lease these things all day long though

There are 3 recalls on this vehicle. One recall is for the engine valve springs which may break while driving. Could it be possible the engine ticking is a symptom? It's your one concern but a major one. Thanks for your expert review.

We had a 2006 Kia Sedona with the earlier version of this engine. Purchased super cheap in 2016 with 240k miles. We drove it another 100k to 340k miles total before selling it with the engine and transmission still runnjng smoothly, and the rest of the vehicle holding up impressively well. I think Hyundai and Kia quality peaked in the mid 2000s. I wouldn't buy a newer one.

I wanted to first comment by saying Kia telluride is my first Kia and in 2020 when I was considering a full size suv the highlander pilot were a joke. Granted they have higher credibility of reliability all my other cars are Japanese, but the Telluride was so much more value I decided to give it a try and I paid below MSRp before all the craze of over sticker. I have had it for over 80000 miles and time will tell on long term reliability. My other Japanese cars are over 220k and 260k miles. I doubt it will give me that life. One thing for sure it send Honda and Toyota back to the drawing board and they had to step up their design and hence the new pilot and grand highlander. With those choices still there I still don’t see any slow down on sales for Telluride so that tells you something. I have one more for my warranty to run out I will still keep it after and see how it fares.

We had a 2023 Telluride, and it was needing its 3rd AWD coupler at 39,000 miles. Warranty was covering it but eventually the warranty would run out. I wasn't about getting an AWD coupler every 15-20,000 miles. We traded and got something else.

Here comes a long response, skip down to my TLDR if you don't feel like reading the whole thing but I recommend you do. My family had a 2017 Explorer that was a complete lemon (too many details to furnish here), and before that our 2014 4Runner had an engine failure. Lemons exist and you got one too. The year is 2024, there is no shortage of free, fast, and accurate information. It blows my mind how unsophisticated people still are though. They (not you, they as in people) just repeat disinformation without even fact checking. There has been much said about Kia's (and Hyundai) reliability. Often painting the manufacturer as the least reliable brand. Unfortunately facts do not support this claim. You had a lemon, end of story. Here are some facts. Kia Telluride Sales Figures (Since first released) 2019: 58,932 2020: 75,119 2021: 93,705 2022: 99,564 2023: 110,765 As sales climb, statistically there will be an increase in incidents. But if Kia had a reliability issue, or mismanaged consumer relationships, the numbers will speak for themselves and sales will tank. When listening to car reviews, we the consumers need to discern the source of the review. Performance focused reviewers (99% of youtube car channels) will always tell you to go buy the most sporty car. They could be comparing minivans for all they care, the one that sprints the fastest to 60 or can handle high speed turns the best is what they will crown the best. On the other hand a mechanic (like this channel) will always tell you about reliability. And tell you that the one to buy is the one with the best longevity. As if we all need a car to go 300,000 miles with just an oil change. The truth is, we don't need a fast SUV and we don't need an SUV to last for 25 years. We are not professional race car drivers and we don't keep the same car for 25 years (let alone 10 years) no matter what reliable it is. Your case is unique because you had a lemon. But for the vast majority of 438,085 Telluride owners since 2019, they happily got exactly what they wanted out of it. TLDR: You had a lemon, Kia doesn't have a reliability issue (it's not the best, not the worst).

@ChristianC-gy1ym we loved ours and had planned on keeping it. I'm not the only person that's had AWD coupler issues it's actually a pretty common issue in Tellurides across all years. Alot of the issue is the design and how it works. It just wasn't feasible to keep it and at some point the warranty wasn't gonna cover the cost. An AWD coupler is approx. 2700 dollars to replace. I can understand having to replace one a couple times in it's lifetime but not every 20,000 miles or so.

@@Blackz9211 Like I said lemons exist. If there is an inherent design flaw with their coupler that creates these lemons I can ascribe to that notion. But at that point I would say it's a weakness, and not so much a design flaw. If just ONE needs to be replaced I can also see that happening. But every 20,000 miles?? That's a ridiculous claim. Bonkers. JD Power rates Telluride's reliability at 83 out of 100. Consumer Reports also placed the Telluride (2023) above the Highlander (hybrid). I think you may be conflating the coupler issue with overall reliability. In other words, when the Telluride does go wrong it tends to be the AWD coupler, but this also is not common enough to impact the overall reliability rating. FYI I don't own a Telluride, I drive its brother Palisade. Which scores couple notches below the Telluride per Consumer Reports.

Those shocks are expensive but only when compared to an average shock. Those are self-leveling and when compared to an air-ride self-leveling system they are inexpensive (as he noted).

I have a very similar 2024 Kia Telluride to the one you reviewed and only have 1500 miles on it so far. I recognize many of the finer points you commented on and I learned a lot about the car's mechanicals. I am surprised you did not mention the sealed transmission. There is no way to check the lubricant level in the transmission! I am sure my concerns are overblown but this is the first vehicle that I have owned that does not allow the driver to check and add (if necessary) transmission fluid.

I had a 2008 KIA Sorento and it was excellent, no problems while I had it. However, IMO, too many people have had problems with them beyond 100,000 miles. So, I did not buy another KIA instead purchasing a 2012 Toyota SR5 4Runner. Currently I have 130,000 miles on the 4Runner and not one issue!!!

I have this vehicle, but do not plan to keep it past the warranty. Other than that, it’s been a blast to own. Very stylish and luxury features included. You look at it from the hood and stepping in to it looks luxury with the 2023 refresh. I’ve been fortunate enough that I have never had any issues with it. Like many other vehicles in our household, and ones I have had in the past, there is always a risk having of problems. The problems generally show up in the early life of the vehicle mainly due to improper installation at factory or a faulty part. Also, proper maintenance and care is key for the engine in the telluride.

My 2011 Sorento 3.5 with 165K does the VVT rattle noise on startup and has some upper end noise at idle most of the time, perfectly normally even with 2-3x per year oil changes and minimal sludge buildup.

I have a 2012 Kia Sorento with a V6 and 180000 Miles and the ticking noise has been there since I remember, but yes it sounds like one of these days will die on me 😄. Also, my daughter owns a 2016 Sorento with 132000, the same ticking sound, but I can't complain, these two cars have served us well and a statement to Kia is they're progressively making better cars that are basically you have to look at as good appliances they're not for a car enthusiastic per see, but for everyday use, other manufactures fail even on that. Nice review as usual.

You take it to the dealer and they say its the high pressure fuel injection that makes that noise....until it stops making that noise when its still running...been ticking for 175k miles, drives me insane, but she keeps on "ticking"😅

He is not sure the mechanical valve adjustment and valve ticks, and reliability was bad in prior Kia product but current iteration seems fine and not heard of major issues. other than that it’s a stellar machine. Are all the comments saying it’s not reliable bad not worth the money it’s bad engine and bad transmission and bad interior all falling apart etc. all your personal opinion? I had a 2020 Telluride for 2 years. You are correct in saying that it is a mid-grade car as far as reliability. Unfortunately that 10 year warranty that they boast about is not worth the paper it is written on. I had nothing but problems trying to get defects fixed and I had quite a few. KIA never fixed any of the defects, they were either out of parts or just refused to fix the car. One of the items that came up were the headlights. I had the halogens. The brights simply would not function correctly and the low beams were so horrible the car was unsafe to drive at night. I just got fed up with the poor customer ownership experience and sold the thing. My wife and I now own 2 Lexus, a RX (hers) and a GX(mine).

I’ve had a ‘24 Telluride SX X-line for 13 months (pretty much exact one shown) and it’s more or less been a tank so far. Stock Michelins were toast after 20k miles. Came new with a loose BSM sensor in the rear so they had to remove the bumper cover to fix that. Also it’s had 3 recalls out on it since new that I had done all at once. Great review ! Really considering this SUV and your video made me lean toward it even more. As a side note, I understand that plastic backs for the front seat feels less premium and allows cost savings for Kia, but they're also very practical and easy to clean when the kids put their shoes and boots all over it (especially in the winter).

Hi, I very much enjoyed this video. I did find a few things u missed. The gauges u showed r in the SX+ trims & as u change the drive modes, the gauge screen changes & u can also set it to show real time weather conditions as the theme (cloudy, sunny, rain, snow, storming, sunset,...). U said "they don't do much" but they actually do alot. U did mention the turn signal cameras but didn't show it. That is a big feature that sets Kia/Hyundai apart from the other brands.

I really dont like the issues around that engine. V6 engines like this are supposed to smooth, solid and worry free for a long time, but that tick being there leads me to believe that won't be the case. I'd probably just go for its competition. Less refined for sure but the BUILD quality and MECHANICAL quality would be better and thats what i care about. Great review, as always!

Thanks for the awesome and unbiased review! I've been a fan of Kia products since 2012. That's when my wife and I traded a 2011 Camry SE in because of an unacceptable manufacturing flaw - a leaking seal on the oil pan. (We of course had the vehicle fixed by warranty before turning it in to the Kia dealer.) Our first 2012 Sportage SX turbo AWD had a fuel pump problem - covered by warranty. No other problems, and we turned it in for the same model in 2016. The 2016 had a leaking valve cover gasket after 90,000 miles. No other problems on that one either. It has 105,000 miles now and doesn't even have a squeak or rattle anywhere. I bought a 2013 Rio and had to change a license plate light after 90,000 miles... no other problems with that one either😂

The intermittency of the ticking is puzzling, but what I feel should be mentioned is that bucket and shim valve adjustments do maintain their adjustment for many many miles. I would say the first adjustment is quite important to do on time though whenever HyunKia suggests, but trusting your ears after that one is probably all that would be required for a long time. Naturally you don't want too noisy or but more importantly you don't want it getting 'quieter' with age as that could indicate a tightening setting from wear and that's a worse situation than a subdued tick. Certainly if they become tight enough to not allow a valve to fully close. It seems Kia has put a lot of faith in those small solenoid actuated child-proof locks. That's quite trick and if they've used good hardware and high-quality wiring connections behind the trim and resistant to corrosion, might not ever give trouble. Would like to see you do a Murano review. Granted it'd probably be a 2024 not sure if Nissan has plans to continue it in USA and Cda. It has many old school things that I know you like, example quite a lot of protective rear bumper. Really excellent seats, very quiet and quite peppy but with fairly good fuel economy, especially if you're not too aggressive. Comes with Michelin's 👍

I have a 2021 Telluride SX AWD with the self leveling rear shocks. The rear shocks have been replaced TWICE in the last 15,000 miles and will need to be replaced again. There appears to be some kind of design flaw in the shock isolator assembly that causes the shocks to move around and make a clunking noise. There is a TSB on this issue and KIA has now sent a letter extending the warranty on the rear shocks to 15 years and 180,000 miles.

Our 2023 Kia Soul has made valve clatter noise on cold start up since we bought it new. I tried to mix 0W-20 with 0W-30 (2 quarts to 2 quarts) using Mobil1 and it helped a lot but then I read on a forum someone with the same 2.0L Nu engine used Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-20 and the noise went away. I switch to PUP and have to say the cold startups are much quieter. Engine has almost 20k miles on the odometer and doesn't burn any oil, I did the first oil change at 1k miles and after that every 3k miles, and so far so good, still noisy on start up but I once it heats up to op-temp it quiets down. Maybe these Telluride engines would do better with PUP.

One of my local neighbours replaced a 3rd gen us made highlander with a telluride. It looks sharp. I doubt it will last a decade with simple maintenance like the highlander but hope it does.

I drive a 2024 rental Palisade (same motor) that started with 13K on it about a month ago. It still rattles when it starts. IN PHOENIX, IN AUGUST! But most of the time, it is so smooth that I need to double-check that it's on, like a hybrid. The spare was a god sent when we got a flat on the I10. Also, I swear that it gets much better gas mileage on premium gas...not sure why...it's a regular gas engine...

I have the 2021 Telluride. Other than a couple of recalls, I have no problems. My vehicle is very quiet and has a great ride. My only dislikes are the auto Start/Stop feature as I have to push it every time I start to keep it off. Also, remote start turns off before my vehicle is warm. I am not technical so it is perfect. I also have a steering wheel lock as I heard they are easy to steal as well as get insurance. DEFECTS? I noticed there are plastic clips on the sun visors. These identical clips broke on two of my parent's Kia vehicles as they aged. I try not to unsnap the visor to rotate to the side window. It is as good as the best Cadillacs of the past with its smooth ride and comfort at a better price.

I had a 2011 Hyundai and one of the visor clips broke as well. I assume they have likely fixed them in the newer models, but those were a really weak point a few years ago.

Nothing like a lil transmission fluid mixed into the engine oil to remove that engine tick. I have an 04 Silverado 5.3 notorious for the tick. I started adding a quart of transmission fluid with 5 quarts 10w30 for every oil change. Literally got rid of the tick. It’s a well know trick, though do so at your own risk. Apparently the transmission oil really cleaned out oil passages in and around the rockers, lifters etc. I currently have 198k miles on the truck.
