I am enjoying your Karmann Ghia videos. That was the first car I learned to drive at 10 years old. My dad bought a 1957 model in Germany when he was stationed there. Just after the war. The German owner had put a Porsche 356 engine in it. Porsche 356 seats. In the place they normally have a clock, he put the Tachometer. The car had an emergency tank that you activated with a little lever under the dash to get you home. So it was really a Porsche 356 in Ghia clothes. We brought it back to the USA from Germany to El Paso. Unfortunately, my Dad sold it in 1968. Wish I had it now. It was really neat.

I used to make head liners for cars back in my upholstery days. You need to save the old pieces CAREFULLY to make a pattern. Too many guys just RIP the old ones out then expect us to magically fart a new head liner that fits. If you want a good fitting restored head liner, leave the thing in and let the guy who is restoring it take it out. Most of the head liners I worked with were falling down from tobacco smoke. It causes the glue to crystalize and fall off. Convertable tops were much harder but after a while I figured it out. Sewing the rear window panel in was always a treat. Lots of fun times! I do remember the rodent ridden cars. Usually the wiring was chewed up if it had a dome light. Rear decks were ALWAYS full of nests. Wouldnt white paint make the interior brighter than black paint?

Just to let you know, The next time you park a car or anything else just put some dryer sheets in them. Don,t know why but mice wont go anywhere near it. I parked 2 cars and my boat in my pole barn, put a couple of sheets in each one. Not one mouse or anything else for that matter even went in the barn! Learned this from the fella next door.

Rubbered in windows are great since you can remove and reinstall them without any special sealers. To remove easier use a product called releaseall or something that actually contains an oil. WD 40 doesnt work. to install clean rubber really well with real thinners, sometimes marked as Lacquer thinners. Pretty much if a white rag comes off black its not clean yet. Clean window glass with Windex, no subs to that product. Install by wetting rubber down with windex to act as lubricant. leave dry clean off window after. Wont leak. You add any sealants to a rubbered in window and guaranteed it will leak every single time! Mustie1 Fantastic works just as well for neutralizing mouse smell. Spray scrub and your done. Keep old headliner if possible for bar locations. Most upholstery shops can make up a cheap headliner for you as long as they have the old one, and some measurements for a pattern. Might want to wash it down with some old solvent though so it dont smell as bad.

My 71' Bug had a mouse nest in the rear seat that was repeatedly removed and put back during a 2 month long rebuild much like your project. It wasn't until the final victory ride after a full engine rebuild and replacing about everything you are replacing, did I find them when one of my girlfriends stepped on one during the test drive. But that was 1975. Great memories brought back by your videos! Thanks Mustie1!

After the source of the smell is cleaned up. You could use an air purifier / ozone generator inside the vehicle. Just air the ozone out of it before entering the vehicle afterwards. Ive used one in my garage, and other parts of the house. Works great. Just be sure its an unoccupied space.

Man oh man, I swear I could smell that interior through the video! Had thoughts that maybe you could wash that headliner at 1st, but the more you got into it I could see it was a 'trash' item. Good job on that tightening up of the E-brake linkage, and the painting of the interior as well. Really good how that little motor you resuscitated for that Ghia is now running quite well. Had doubts when I seen that substance "formerly known as oil" inside it, but a testament to those bug motors how well it came back with some love.

I love your progress on this gem. Actually I love your whole channel in general. I strongly suggest you get an ozone generator and run it in the car with the doors closed for a day or two to kill any mold or biological material. It will help very much with prolonged odor reduction, especially in the areas you can't reach like the heater ducts. A STRONG WORD OF CAUTION! Do this with your garage door open or leave the car outside while you run the ozone machine! It can cause respiratory harm!

I'm from Poland, I love your videos (especially with engines). I really enjoy watching someone repairing cars and other things :) Last year I have repaired bodywork of my Seat Toledo (it's based on VW Rabbit/Jetta MK2 and MK3, but it's liftback ;) ) and probably this summer I'll start repairing VW Scirocco MK1 (sitting about 15-20 years in shed) or Lada 2103 (it spent about 12 years outdoors). One problem with this cars is (except they are old, rusted, not started long time) that they aren't registered. Even if I fix them, I probably can't get license plates for them on normal way, but there is something as "historic vehicle". If car has more than 25 years and it isn't produced for more than 15 years and most of parts are original (car left factory with that type of part, f.e. engine) it can have special license plates, but it becomes "monument" and cannot be modified. Should I start fixing one of the cars or should I leave them as they are because it will be waste of money and time?
