OLD Tip Truck Infested with SNAKES Sitting for 10+ YEARS! Will it START?

In this video, I ask the question will it start in relation to this vintage Bedford Dump Truck after sitting for many years. The entire truck is covered in spider webs, mould and everywhere you look there’s another snake skin. It has also suffered considerable rust after sitting in a coastal region for so many years. It’s in such rough shape, the first question I asked myself when I saw it was, is it simply too far gone, followed by, is that the remnants of yet another SNAKE?
Thanks very much for watching.

Hey Bruce, I bought an old TK Beddy many years ago for my fencing business, I had a steel tray and a spot on Cab but the six cylinder engine was knackered. I had a recon. 253v8 Holden motor lying around so I modified a few things and put that in with its 4 speed manual tranny. It went like a beauty but after about 3 months the diff seized up and Idid a small fencing job for a cocky and he had a split diff in his workshop for a TK so we made a clean swap. I found and Eaton splitter for her and wired it all up and gave me 8 gears which came in useful over the years. Final upgrade was to add gas after I took the heads off and modified them. That old TK gave me years of faithful service with not a problem and when I bought my farm she carried on as an awesome all rounder. So obviously this video struck at the old heart strings and I’m pleased you gave her your special brand of love. Another ripper from the old master, well done

Good day sir. To point out a couple friendly tips, there's a poor ground from the battery to the frame, Rusted connection between cable and frame. Unbolt that, clean the rust off, the starter might turn faster. It would be smart to pull the starter, disassemble, clean it, derusting parts, sandpaper brush and rotor parts, lube starter gear and travel. I'm surprised you wasted all that starting fluid trying to start it before taking the carb off, disassembling and cleaning it. A good mechanic with a higher than average troubleshooting IQ takes the time to follow the proper steps before trying to fire up any engine that's been setting, including flushing old fuel out of the fuel lines. (Before I started working in the construction industry as a heavy equipment mechanic, I started engine salvage startups in 1980 after reading Chilton's Auto-Disel Repair and Overhaul Manual. They have a set full proof troubleshooting procedures for each engine type that prevents any further damage to clinically ill engines, trannies, rear ends, etc.) After you know the engine turns over, Always pull a carburetor and starter, clean and test ignition parts (each spark plug), compression test cylinders, free sticky valves, check fuel pump delivery, clean ground (earth), and ignition connections, check for stuck alternator, generator and water pump, fix coolant leaks, . . . Then, , , try to start your engine. Impatience and dimmed-witts are a mechanic's worst adversaries. :)

Bruce your from the old days of simple mechanical engineering . Amazing how much of Australian auto language is similar to Brits and Irish back then . I live in USA for years and it’s so different .. V8 s and 300 HP where as my Mini was 32 hp . Great to watch u work and not use scanners to find the problem 😂👍

Hey Bruce, when you were checking the firing order it reminded me of my brother and his second car a HR Holden red motor he brought, the motor old and burning old so he got an Reco 186 to stick in it, this is where it gets amusing, Him and his 2 mates worked the Friday evening, Sat and all Sunday to get the motor swapped out, they got it in Sat afternoon, then flattened 2x Batteries cranking it over, then towed it up and down the Road till late Sunday evening, My bro went to work as Apprentice Motor Mechanic Monday, I was studying for my HSC in Vic, and needed a break, so had a tinker with my Bro's car, I checked the Firing order By first checking the rotation on the of the distributor's rotor by turning the Fan the correct way and found the had the Plug's wired in reverse order, so corrected that and turned the engine over and it fired right up, turned it off and went inside and told My Dad and He was not Happy saying he wanted to see how long it was going to take hi to work it out and go out and put it back to how it was, I'm not 100% sure in what happened but I'm pretty sure my Mother told him that I worked it out, and he got it running Monday evening, It was never mentioned of again He must have ben embarrassed about it!

Up till about 18 months ago I had a TK tipper. It looks like it was a later model than that one your playing with Bruce. Mine had the 6 cylinder 300CI petrol motor and the carby was a Stromberg, (2 bolts only) same as Holden as you would well know. The motor looked exactly like that one you were working on. It was seized when I got it so I did an in chassis rebuild and it went like a trooper after that. Plenty of guts even when fully loaded with dirt in the bin. It was air over hydraulic brakes, bit of a pain but the park brake was air release so I used the park brake air valve as the brakes on the beast. Pretty hairy coming down the mountain on my property loaded to the hilt with some road base for road repairs and only the park brake for stopping power. It worked OK, otherwise I would not have used it. Thanks for the video.

I drove a couple of these Bedys back in the day. They were diesels and one was as slow as a wet week ,only having a single speed diff. The other one had a 2 speed diff and was a lot better for it. I for one would love to see part 2 of this old girls start-up, and maybe some spare parts could be salvaged off her. By the way the controller on the right of the steering wheel is the vacuum brake controller for a trailer brake. When going for a trailerlicence back in those days, you had to keep your hand over the trailer brake controller handle when approaching intersections or pedestrian crossings etc or you would be failed. The good old days??

Had a Matchbox Bedford tipper truck as a child, toy was older than me, but I know the lines of the cab. Surprised to see the ignition key was located SAAB style on the floor next to the gear lever. When you get used to it, it is efficiently and logically located and you don't have to fuss and fumble with the ign switch located behind the steering wheel.

I’m sure it will go. Often I will squirt some engine oil in the cylinders to help the rings seal, every little bit of compression helps. Just my thoughts. I’ll be watching for more.
