I agree. A bit of a different angle. Meet the person who owns the car instead of just the repair or problem being the only focus. Little ideas like that that change the dynamic and set it apart from what others are doing. Most shops don't even let customers in... ya know for insurance reasons lol... more like so you can't see how we're ripping you off

When you buy a 10 year old thoroughbred, expect to feed it some hay. Needed a clutch anyway, so a set of rings not so bad. Timing gear easily checked/replaced too, while it's all out.

Nice to see a true Master Mechanic who lets his work ethic and skill do all the talking, rather then telling us at the start of each video what a great mechanic he is. I would always jump on Hoovies's BMW videos because I knew we were heading to the Ninja's shop. This is definitely my favorite "mechanics" channel on KZbin

You know, there are a few channels I like. They are entertaining and knowledgeable. The ones that are my favorites show integrity and humility. For Jonny to show his little temper tantrum and then eat a piece of humble pie and admit he was way off base shows he's grounded. I enjoyed this one. I hope this channel explodes! Love ya, Ninja!

I got my 2010 audi a4 motor rebuilt under warranty due to oil consumption... now have 235k miles on it. Nothing but $35 oil changes and spark plugs since 90k miles. Stage 2 tuned since 25k miles!

Ya those 2.0 TFSI were horrible for a couple years. Needed tons of work. If the oil consumption started while under warranty Audi would update it all. Still an engine I would stay away from, those years anyways. I think it was 2008-2010 worst ones iirc. The other years that have cam follower issues are much better overall. My brother just learned how to do that job himself and he replaces it every year as preventative maintenance. Being religious with maintenance also really helps those engines.

@@rxtuninginc8444 Yeah, I stayed away from the B8 for exactly this reason. The bad pistons leading to a complete rebuild didn’t sound fun. Jokes on me though, I just dropped off one of my B7s at the Ninja’s shop yesterday for the timing belt and cam tensioner. Lol

got me a B5 A4 2.8 Quattro that i saved from a salvage yard. 17k miles on it now since i bought it almost a year ago with 5k on it all original, i saw the chassis and the exhaust pipe still shining like it was straight up polished it was that clean. Turned it on with a jumper box and was like uh its really really quiet :) pretty good in the snow too

I loved my '97 B5 1.8T Quattro manual. Bought it off lease and drove it for 10 years and another 130K miles. I sold it because I wanted a MKVI GTI so much. I miss both those cars.

@@moniack cool man. My Dad has my old MK4 GTI 1.8t the one with the AWP but i kinda didnt want it anymore because i was too reckless and needed something more daily-able and maybe not too sporty. Plus i was worried of things wearing out and costing a bunch. Its a family trophy car now, unfortunately sits mostly.

I forget which one, but I think it's the Ford 3.5 eco boost that has the water pump behind the timing chain. The water pump is a regular wear item and requires a $4000 tear down to get to. The kicker? The impellor is plastic and regularly breaks...... That's the issue with auto engineers these days. Ok, if you're going to engineer it this way, make the water pump more durable so it should last the life of the engine.

Hi from the UK..... I am currently working on an A5 Quattro manual and changing the engine for a refurbished unit which cost the same as a set of the updated pistons!!!! And yes when my boss told me there were bolts on the flywheel like an automatic!!! I laughed and thought he was having a joke.... but yeah had to do that and it is stupid and not needed at all!!!! But engine is ready to go back in now but at least we both know about it now...... Hope all went well with that engine.... I have another 2 coming in but its on an A4 and a Skoda Superb!!! Previously done the supercharged and turbo charged unit in a VW Scirocco which was a real pain in the ass....

This is so cool. It's paced and edited like those 90s documentary/reality shows about experts and their daily hell (see Boiling Point featuring Gordon Ramsay if you don't know what I mean). All it needs is a dramatic voiceover. "Jonny is taking on a very sick Audi A4 engine. But can he diagnose what's wrong, or is there trouble ahead?" Cut to Jonny: "Well, we've been working on it for three months now and it's worse than I thought...". Fantastic :)

Have had a blast going through the back catalog. Would love to see more Gen 2 (R56, R55, R57, R58, R59) content. There was a teal Coupe’ in one video and there seems to be a Mini in the shop every other video. Wife and I are gleeful owners of a R58 S and do 90% of our own maintenance. We’re in California wishing Jonny was nearby. Learning Mini maintenance from the Ninja would be awesome! 🤓🤓🤓

Definitely a beautiful body i can see why he wants to rebuild the engine. I owned a 04 a4 and the timing belt went on it and I just decided to sell it for parts. Mine wasn’t a manual, if it was I would have definitely considered just shelling the money for a used or remand engine. Charles is very smart imo for taking it to the car ninja. This! I sold a car to my cousin once, a 1977 VW Derby (my second car after crashing my first). It ran just fine while I owned it, but two weeks after he bought it the head gasket blew and because of a warped head he had to replace it. It was cheap and easy to do, but he still was angry with me for quite a while, even if it wasn't my fault in any way...

poor maintenance these cars should go much further without needing an engine rebuild. atleast not these a4's in europe they drive and drive with over 300.000km on them. but they get maintained well

It's amazing the lengths Audi had to go through to get another 4-6" of forward offset wheelbase with the Quattro arrangement (the extended flywheel/clutch setup)

i had a 96 a4 5spd quattro. that car drove beautifully. the engine looked sharp as in its edges would cut you.

Audi was attempting to move the engine back by moving the differential closer to the front of the transmission case. This was done for slightly better weight distribution to reduce understeer. All this is what necessitated that interesting flywheel and clutch design.

Car Ninja is cool, but Naptown tuner is the guy to go to for all things 2.0T. Don’t need to drop the engine with subframe and transmission at all, and he showed how to pull it on the driveway in 50 mins several times.

These are very interesting videos as an ownership veteran of many German cars. One comment I will make is ALL the cars shown appear to be immaculate. That makes me wonder how many miles are on the cars that come in for service? Perhaps it would add to the videos to mention the total miles on the cars as you begin their service.

ive never dropped the trans and engine together to put in pistons, pull the whole core support and use the cherry picker to pull the long block out the front and leave the trans in the vehicle.

How much consumption are we talking? Audis burn oil man, it doesn't mean it won't run like a champ. I had the old 2.8 litre V6 from the late 90's-early 2000's. The car had over 230k, got 30 mpg on the highway and drove smooth as silk. It did consume 1 quart every 1K miles though...

Man, I owned 1 2003 BMW 530i it was great until it wasn’t ….the cooling system, alarm system, misc electrical gremlins, and fluid leaks from literally everywhere. A vehicle should not do these things at 125k miles. Lesson learned, Japanese vehicles moving forward, my checkbook and stress level are in a much better place. God Bless you Johnny for having patience with these rolling pieces of German “engineering”.

I had an 03 in 06 07. Less than 50k miles when I bought it. No problems. Drove great. Maybe it was a good thing the finance company got it when they did. I actually traded an 02 A6 Quattro for it. Now that thing was trouble!

@@a.m.9357 My father purchased a 1985 325e in 1989 with 50k miles for 14k. Drove it until 2008 when a deer totaled it. It had just shy of 300k miles, never left he or my family stranded. 2 clutches, several valve cover gaskets, couple of brake jobs, a muffler and fluids and filters and it ran like a top when it was sent to the junk yard. Try that with a BMW made after the 90s! It really is sad to watch the downturn of these once great car companies who have traded their values for those of planned obsolescence. If I could pick 2 cars from the German heyday it would be a 1985 300sd and a 1987 535is, now those cars were truly timeless.

My 12 Q7 3.0t was using about 2 quarts of oil between oil changes until I replaced the Pcv valve now maybe a pint if that.

True, you can get a 2015/2016 motor with low miles under 3k. Once when mine blows I will swap a used one in. Im at 235k miles but still runs great on my 10 Audi A4. Im buying a new car soon but will keep it as I love the way it drives!

Oil consumption? must be a 2.0 TSI like mine LOL . Low tension oil control rings , low speed running, bad quality gas. Drive it like a German probably last forever with a few timing chains.
