The early versions (~2004) of these engines were known in Europe as "Head crackers", because the heads would crack for no apparent reason. It took them 2 revisions of the head to fix the issue. I owned one in a Golf 5, and it was a solid torque-y engine, and it never failed me, but I only clocked it to 100.000Km, so it's possible someone else had the issues, if any.

@@andreim841 I do remember working on a later Seat 1.9 TDI that had worn the tappets so much it ripped a hole through them, and obviously the camshaft was also damaged. According to the garage owner "it's normal on these". The engine had something like 180.000Km. This was somewhat unexpected for an engine renowned for it's reliability (the earlier versions at least).

Hey johny great job on the belt. Done mine too dyi on 2021 tdi in europe and its still the same apart from ADblue stuff getting in the way. Pulley went just at 77 000 miles :(. went with OE VW kit and hopefully it will stay trouble free for another few years.

Probably the reason for the seven spline bolt is the 200Nm (147 ½ lb/ft) torque spec? A hex head bolt might get rounded off trying to torque it down.

The balance shaft was a problem on the 2.0 L TDI, has it gotten better? On the older 1.9 L TDI there was no balance shaft that could cause problems.

Or...you could learn how to do the work yourself. If you are intelligent, mechanically inclined, and can access factory approved or oem service info. I understand some should not attempt to repair anything, period, much less their own vehicle. However, I also understand alot of people dont want to get their hands dirty today so, this is why every variation of the services industry is making $$$bank$$$. Because they know the same thing. Supply and demand....a oppportunost dream come true.

i bought a 2013 for my son's first car. 64k miles, vr6, awd. had a ppi done before buying it, and no issues present. when it got home from the dealer, i immediatley had a german specific shop do an oil change with motul, and had the dct serviced. several months later, no issues so far. oil changes will be done every 5k with full synthetic oil, like i do on all my cars. i heard the vr6 are less prone to the timing chain issues the 2.0 are, so thats a relief!

As per VW’s own ELSA workshop manual the HPFP’s pulley doesn’t need to be exactly aligned for the pin after turning the crankshaft, its just the camshaft as HPFP is gonna pull on the belt either way. Also since this is CR it doesnt need to be that precisely synced with injection cycles.
