I worked for a government fleet for 30 years, on every car, truck and anything else with a motor. We had one body guy for a fleet of over 1,000 vehicles and when he retired they closed the position. But the guy was around 60 and an absolute whiz. Everybody said nobody ever saw him work and every time you went by his shop he was sitting, or else out. But dented cars came in, new looking cars came out. But in a way only a city worker would do them, one time my super told me to take him over a car. It had two small dents but the super only wrote up one, fix both, obviously, right? In true civil service fashion, body whiz only fixed the one he wrote up. The other dent was 6 inches away and untouched. No wonder they closed the position.

You must have a lot of confidence in your work to cut the blend right there! Great job, I love learning new things from other painters. The guy who taught me preferred to do it his own way and never took advice or new tips and tricks, which resulted in him getting into bad habits that he didn't know were bad. Luckily I had an open mind and used the lessons he taught me as a basis, and learned a lot more from guys like you who actually know why they do what they do, and not because "well that's how they told me how to do it". Complacency is what kills a good painter in this business.

@@PaintSociety hi Brian, nice job! I have a question, just curiosity: i need to paint just a part of the fender like you did in this video, but i already sanded the whole fender with 320 and 400 grit. What if i paint just the small part that needs paint and spray the rest with 2 layers of clear coat? let's call it a "cheap blend". What problems could i encounter after this kind of experiment?

Awesome stuff, as a self taught painter as well, trial and error, experience is invaluable. Talked to so many “trained” “schooled” painters in the past and its mind blowing on their outlook on a lot of the little circumstances and details. The one or two over the years that I ran into like yourself with more open mind and views I learned the most from and there’s always something or a different way to do things as you demonstrated here. Some thought I was nuts back in the day for not going into one or two more panels etc etc on repairs like this with silver... Auto painters like yourself are few and far in between man, so good at what you do yet you know and aren’t afraid to say it that when it comes to the chemistry of auto paint materials that it’s not always set in stone and doesn’t always go as planned. It’s been a while for me professionally but just about to do some personal work and it was refreshing to run into your vid 👍🏽. It makes me miss doing it regularly, kind of lol. Awesome stuff!

we work wth acrylic urethanes, somewhat the same process, but we paint canopies for store fronts h-rise bldg curtainwall etc... the finish has to be impeccable, but some panels are large,and have a 90 degree angle ,that may be 3-4 feet long.,since this is hjgh production,we sometimes end up with dry spots on the corner of the 90.,which sometimes we dont catch until after its baked...the finish is in the paint,so,we cant just touch up the dry spots...e have to sand and re-shoot entire panel, ....and if we use tape on the 90,we may get lucky,or we may see the tape line,..do you think this blue tape could work ?...what is it called, and where do i get it ? all advice is much appreciated..thank you
@jdimeo19665 жыл бұрын
I'm a newbie, can you clarify a few things? I understand the sanding portion, but not sure about the painting process. Using a base coat with a slow reducer, do you paint slightly past the primed/repaired area or base the entire panel just short of the panel's right edge and top body line? Then clear the entire panel as usual, just short of the top body line. Then spray the blender along the top body line. Do I have the steps correct?
@PaintSociety5 жыл бұрын
Pretty much you want to contain the base blending as much as you can because this repair has minimal room. Blend the base until it looks good. Use slow reducer to help keep the edge wet. Then first coat of clear comes up short of the tape (to not build up a line). The second coat of clear goes over the foam tape. Peel the tape and spray your blender to melt the fuzzy edge. This is not a repair for a newbie. It takes time to get to this point but you gotta start somewhere.

Inspiring stuff. I need to know, could you do this kind of blend on metallic paint job but clear coat respray only? I want to reclear my roof and do a my fade outs toward the top of the 4 main pillars. I honestly don't care if the areas that peeled remain somewhat discoloured, it's an old car and I just want to roof to be glossy again. Would I be able to get by with some aerosol 2k a hit of the blender on the fade areas and a good wet sand/buff to finish? Or is there more to it?

Why no completely finished results? I wanted to see how closely the new paint matched the old!
