DAMN. My Man is a SAVAGE! Clearly a consumate professional. I greatly appreciate the way he explained all of his techniques and why he was working in a very specific way. My Man explained everything so well, that after I finished watching the tutorial, I felt I could go out and easily apply the same techniques! Which, of course, is the furthest thing from reality! But that is the sign of an excellent teacher and a master of a craft; being able to explain a complex subject simply, so that the students can easily understand. Amazing video! 👍💯

Thank you for taking the time to show and explain this 🤙 back in the day I used to do everything almost exactly as you explained but did not know about a “blender” I basically color sanded and buffed that blend area & on dark colors there was always a faint halo or faint visible edge to me anyway that people basically dont notice but it always annoyed me as a painter, just knowing it’s there. Never tried this and I am about to and excited haha. Basically if I wanted it perfect to me I’d clear the entire panel. It’s amazing how the blender “melts” / blends the edge without dulling the new clear and making it seemless with the old clear. Saves so much time and material etc. I wish I knew this technique decades ago when I did it for a living. Man it puts a whole new perspective on spot repairs.. I’m gonna look to see if you have some tri stage blending vids. I have a couple of tri stage blending tasks awaiting on my project soon and being original paint etc want to keep the painted areas minimal. Luckily it’s pearl white so more forgiving than some other colors but I need it perfect for this project, can’t wait to try it , thanx again main! Liked and subscribed , you get straight to the point , explain and show thoroughly, awesome 🤙🤙

Great video, thanks. I’ve watched a few different videos of this technique and I noticed that you were the only I’ve seen who applied the blender after the clearcoat was dry. The other examples I’ve seen all showed the same thing you did, except the blender was applied immediately after the final coat of clearcoat - while the clearcoat was still wet. Have you done it both ways, and found your way works better? I like your way because then you would not be rushed for time to quickly apply the blender. Thanks again for the video.
@J.Lulo_

I actually apply the blender while the clear is still wet. The blender works best when it is applied immediately after you apply your last coat of clear coat.

I couldn't agere more with the previous post. I've been watching so many of these so-called smart repair videos because I'm in the middle of doing one. Finally, a "clear" (pun intended) explanation of where the sand ing ends, the grits, where the base ends, where the Clearcoat ends, & where to use the blender. I feel so much better now & ready to go! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you..... PS Seems to me that now the biggest hurdle is matching the base color. Does the color ususally match or do you have to make adjustments to the formula??
@J.Lulo_
@J.Lulo_ Жыл бұрын
First I want to say Thank you 🙏 for the kind words I really appreciate it. Second, before you start putting paint on a car you should always check to make sure you’re color matches the paint on the car. Once you know the color matches, when you blend your bumper it should blend seamlessly into the color on the car.

I wouldn’t use blend spray for dry spot or orange peel but I have used it when I notice a dry spot somewhere on a panel after I finish and I just want to clear that spot. What I do is clear the dry spot that I noticed and then I spray the blend spray in that spot to avoid having to spray the whole panel or re-clear the whole paint job.

Good video! I've used all kinds of blenders the last 20 years but I just started using that axalta spray can a few months ago, turns out really nice seems to have more clear in it than most blenders but I seem to get quite a few runs when using it, I blend all panels on a vehicle, I noticed you waited a while before doing it, do you think I should let it set for a bit before laying down the blender? Thanks
@J.Lulo_
@J.Lulo_ Жыл бұрын
Thanks 🙏 for the kind words I appreciate it. And as far as the blender goes, if you’re getting run’s then you should probably wait like 2 to 3 minutes to spray it. And it just needs a light mist with 1 or 2 spritz of the spray and you should be good 👍.

This is the best video at explaining clear coat and blending. Thanks so much for posting this. I'm in the process of trying to fix chips in the paint on my 2013 Silverado. I guess Chevy has a problem with the base not adhering to the primer (bummer), and the shop wanted $3K to fix, which I don't have. I've done pretty well repairing the areas, but still need to clear, and that's been a little intimidating to be honest, but I think you've given me the courage to at least try....

Clear coat burn through is fixed by repainting the area the burnt through. Sometimes you can do a spot repair to fix it but that depends on the area where the damage is.

@@J.Lulo_ thank you! Does it make any difference (it easier) to repair if it’s fresh paint and clear where the burn happened?

Well trying to fix something with fresh clear and paint can cause a problem. Fresh paint and clear can lift ,that means that it will have chemical reactions that makes the paint and clear shrivel up and pull apart. It can be very hard to fix lifting paint so be careful when trying to fix fresh paint. Good luck. 👍

I would never do a blend like that on a fender it just won’t look right. You will be better off just blending your base coat and clearing the whole fender. It will come out a lot nicer and more professional looking. And thank you 🙏 for the kind words I appreciate it.

I have about 10 round holes in my clear coat on the roof of my car. I don't have the courage, budget or equipment to sand and repaint the entire roof and adjoining c pillars. As a short to medium term fix do you think it's possible to simply patch these holes with clear coat? Say I carefully deoxidised and sanded the exposed paint and a few inches of the surrounding clear with 1000 grit, then spray new clear with some overlap. Finishing with some 1500 - 2000 grit and a good buff to sort of blend the new clear with the old. Even if the holes are still visible because the paint underneath remains somewhat discoloured, I would still be happy with it being glossy again across the whole roof. It's an old car and doing a full sand and respray would look too new anyway. Thoughts?
@J.Lulo_
@J.Lulo_ Жыл бұрын
Those sound like fish eyes to me. Yeah you could sand it down with 1000 grit and then re-clear it. It won’t come out perfect but it will at least fill in some of those fish eyes or holes as you described them.
@J.Lulo_
@J.Lulo_ Жыл бұрын
But I would sand the hole roof and re-clear the hole roof making sure to hit the spots that look like holes to flatten them out a little with out breaking through the clear into the paint.

@J.Lulo_
@J.Lulo_ Жыл бұрын
The clear blend goes to the point where the area of the blend was sanded. Then the clear is blended with a blender that gets sprayed on the new clear coat and then lightly polished where it was blended. If done right it shouldn’t leave any lines and the blend should completely disappear.

Yes you will have to re-spray it. I would do the whole bumper at this point. Make sure you sand out the runs properly and you might have to primer over the area that you got the run. Take your time and don’t rush it to make sure you don’t make another mistake. Good 👍 luck.

I’m confused and really want to give this a go on a job I’m doing …..so do you leave a bit of the 1000grit showing and then spray the blender? Do you laquer an inch or so before the end of the 1000 grit? Then melt the new clear coat into the 1000 grit ?
@J.Lulo_
@J.Lulo_ Жыл бұрын
I usually get as close as I can with the clear coat to the area where I sanded with the 1000 grit paper and then I blend it. And then the area gets polished to make the blend disappear.

Im working on my cars fender and the clear coat starter to peel and me being an idiot I started wet sanding it and not some past the base cost and is near the primer so I touched it up with touchup paint for now! But I'm gonna paint it today with spray cans. I seen a video that says I need to hit it with a 600 grit scotch Brite clean the area then paint
@J.Lulo_

If the paint is peeling you have to sand it all down to the primer. I would first sand it with 400 grit paper to remove the paint that’s peeling and then finish with a 600 grit sand paper to paint it.

I don’t think I can use the clear activator to blend, so would it work if I used the reducer I use for my paint to blend when wet, instead of buying a can of clear spot blender?

Thanks. I’m just trying to be higher than a beginner painter. When people talk about reducer, I want to make sure what reducer im using. I’ve also heard of adding 5-10% reducer to total volume of clear coat mix, on the second or last coat of clear, to eliminate orange peel. I also wonder if one can use reducer to pre-clean your spray gun. I have over a gallon of reducer left from an old project and I’m trying to find use for it.

Yes in some clear you can add 5 to 10 percent reducer to help the clear flow out nicer and smoother. And technically you can use reducer to clean out your spray gun but lacquer thinner is better and will do a better job cleaning your spray gun.
