Reading these comments, I notice almost every one is negative. It baffles me that all these people who don't work at Ford can only find the bad in life. This is a nice story by one of the worlds greatest employers. With all the auto manufacturers gone out of business and Ford remains at the top is something to celebrate.

I've never been a follower. I love all the automations my F-150 is equipped with now as opposed to the first F-150 that rolled off the assembly line. Things in life change.

+Marvin Bakerman this technology if wonderful, however, the inevitable end game of this is that if we optimized technical efficiency throughout the entire market, automation robotics, there would be virtually no basis for maintaining human employment, you would make things so cheap that people's sustenance would require almost no income and the whole economy would come crashing down. Technological unemployment is inevitable, the tough question is how do we adapt our socioeconomic system to mitigate this? The best proposed feasible socioeconomic system I'm aware of today is a 'Resource Based Economy', it is unlike any socioeconomic 'ism' that has gone before it, NO MONEY, NO HIERARCHY. Most of the automation I've seen cost more, breakes down more, and needs a Skilled Trades worker standing next to it to keep it going.
@Jono6671

True, but that's often been true with many emerging technologies over time. Eventually it will be an option that's almost impossible to ignore.
@PaleTrailRider

Agreed. I just don't see automation being the end of the world. As we lose jobs in one area, we gain back a few in another. Workers will have to adjust like we have since shoe cobblers were replaced by machines. Also, Skiled Tradesmen make more money and are harder to replace. Which tosses a little power back to the employees. I don't build vehicles anymore. I fix them. I had to update my skills and learn a lot. It has been a healthy experience for me and it has made me more useful to my employer.

+PaleTrailRider "I just don't see automation being the end of the world" true, but it has our current socioeconomic system in it's cross-hairs. Simply if we were to optimize technical efficiency throughout the entire market, automation, AI, robotics, there would be virtually no basis for maintaining human employment, you would make things so cheap that people's sustenance would require almost no income and the whole economy would come crashing down. At some point the rate of technological job displacement will outpace emerging technology jobs simply due to increases in efficiency. +veganath I only know what I have seen. They don't make things cheaper and they frequently create better and higher paying jobs than they eliminate. Take windshield robots for example. We used to have two people decking windshields. It was a tough job. Now we have one person feeding the machine and a tradesman who is never far away to keep the thing going. Also, the error rate has gone way up. Every single weekend workers are paid overtime to fix damaged or leaky windshields. I've seen this play out with automation repeatedly. I would argue that most of the efficiency gains have come because of weaker unions and workers putting on more parts per vehicle than ever before. Also, we used to clean our own bathrooms, remove our own snow and cut our own grass. All of that and more has been farmed out.

If we had different leaders, able to figure out how to go into a high-tech low employment future, this wouldn't be a problem. But as is... we're all going to drown at sea while the small island of jobs continues to erode down to nothing.

NEGATIVITY?? Are there any commentors here that embrace technological efficiency with a vision of a world in which humans will be free of the NEED to work and yet due to said technologies ephemeralization will still have access to life's necessities of which a job is not? This is the beginning of a world were crime, corruption, poverty, environmental degradation and our species greatest admission to failure, war can be ameliorated unlike any other time in history, why? Because when we do not deny people access to life's necessities we do not incentives violence. We are not endangered by outsourcing to cheap labor as much as we are replaced by automation there are programs that route os around bugs themselves to continue operations China and Japan has human bots that are taking the receptions place they look eerily human. Welcome to the matrix just think safety bots having a self preservation program that could target humans cuz they risk rebooting or turning off the robot

Who thinks Ford is going to pay for a worker AND a robot on the same job? It does not make business sense. Where is the worker who used to install this? Is it the guy who pushes a button? You can have one guy push the button on robots in several work stations, doing away with those workers. You see in this video the worker walk away from a robot and go to the next job station. There is nobody at that one either. That shock absorber is not heavy. It is not a MacPherson strut. Ford already rebalances every year in order to reduce the work force by 5%. Do you think they are going to have all these robots and a human on jobs? I don't think so. Look at the "feel good" images of a robot hand giving a thumbs up or doing a fist bump. Isn't that warm and fuzzy? There go the workers. Robots will not be fist bumping anyone. Those people will be on the street.
@Jono6671
@Jono6671 8 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Keep in mind that people may not necessarily be out on the street, but say, if Ford ramps up production, less people will be hired than would have been if the robots weren't installed. That translates to unemployment rising in that sector, even though nobody may have lost their job. IMO.

+1001Hobbies & +Jono6671 companies of the likes of Ford are going to have to contend with an even larger threat to their business than not meeting the growth expectations of their shareholders, and that threat is increasing social unrest due to the displacement of people and their jobs. Unfortunately our socioeconomic system isn't adaptable to our scientific & technological advances. Capitalism has no solution for technological unemployment. The biggest obstacle to social stability is that inherent in our socioeconomic system is structural violence i.e. we are incentivized to gain and maintain a differential advantage over others. Today with our current science of automation technology we have a historically unprecedented opportunity. We should be using a systems approach to the design of entire new city systems that integrate to the extent of our science the automation necessary to meet the needs of all cities residents for free i.e. without debt and servitude. Our current inefficient adhoc cities and capitalism need to be made obsolete in the light of the recognition that the direct application of our science is more efficient at resource management than the outdated use of currency. Inherent in this systems approach is the add benefit of ameliorating crime, corruption, poverty, environmental degradation and our greatest admission of failure war, because when we do not deny people access to life's necessities we do not incentives violence. The best proposed feasible socioeconomic system I'm aware of today is a 'Resource Based Economy', it is unlike any socioeconomic 'ism' that has gone before it, NO MONEY, NO HIERARCHY. Vaganath, I've not yet looked into what you've suggested so if I am way off just let me know. The Government providing for the people has not worked very well for Greece, or the Soviet Union, Cuba, or Korea. China is now adopting Capitalistic methods, even to the point of considering the existence of foreign auto manufacturers without the requirement that they be part of a Joint Venture, as is the case today. I personally do not want anyone providing for me. That limits my opportunities and extent to which I may do for myself, thus placing limits on my personal success.
@1001Hobbies
@1001Hobbies 8 жыл бұрын
The way it is, if they can get one person to do the work of 7 people they would do it. With that in mind, if they can get a robot to do the work of 1 person they will do it. A robot is a one time cost with minimal cost to maintain after that. A human is the same amount of cost every year. There are more advantages beyond that, but that alone is enough to get rid of people.
@veganath
@veganath 8 жыл бұрын
1001Hobbies thanks for your reply. You are correct Governments providing for people is a historical failure especially today as our societies are much to complicated scientifically. Like you I am fiercely independent as an interdisciplinary technologist including web development, software app development, network IT infrastructure and automation(microcontrollers and PLC's). The proposal advocated here isn't any of the historically attempted "ism" of the past, In a Resource Based Economy the emphasis is our science as it is today and the application of this science(our best method for understanding our environment) directly to resource management. Instead of humans at the top of a hierarchy(corporate or political) making decisions we use AI(developed in an opensource environment), making politicians eventually obsolete(a good thing given their track record). I'm not sure I can do it justice in a YT forum, please check out the many documentaries and online resources that go into details, would be interested to hear your take on the proposal. If you have a specific question feel free to return to me.

VERY NICE "INNOCENT" VIDEO... Friendly people worrking hand-to-hand, shoulder-to-shoulder with powerful, strong and powerful robots! Until the "Friendly" robot happens to "hit" a software "bug"... and that human(oid) and not very intelligent worker, that shows NO personal protection gear goes flying!this video shows just how dumb are PR people and CEO´s showing this irrational stage.Don't let me be misunderstood; KUKA is an admirable company, it´s achievements are wonderful, but the video represents a very dangerous situation. It could have gone mad, and we would be looking at a savage one. Several deaths by industrial robots have been recorded. So, this innocent and nice video shows just how stupid and naive the manufacturers PR people and CEO’s are.

"not that hard to build a car now days.." You are showing you have no idea what it takes. Please take a tour of a plant to get an idea. However, that will not show you the technology that goes into them (think of all the conveniences and safety technologies, as well as emissions technologies, that have been incorporated into vehicles just in the past 5 years. Look how long it took Chinese car companies to build a car that is somewhat safe. There is a reason it took them as long as it did.

Someone who cannot spell most words nor type a proper sentence knows all about automotive design? You will have a difficult time with that argument. Today's vehicles are unibody (or unitized) structure. Are you aware of this? Do you know what that means? You do know there is no separate frame structure underneath the car supplying added strength, right? You do know that the quarter panels are an integral part of the body structure and thus it's strength, correct? Marc, you should put down the game controller, pay more attention in school, and deal with reality more before you get too far behind. It's not too late yet, and you will be an adult before you know it. Then what?
