Thank you CarAdvice, it is so rare to see a review that isn't negative because its a "Commodore". Most reviewers write it off as a bogan mobile before they've even sat in it.

The VX is a fantastic car, so is the Camry. But no need to bring down the VF, it is a fantastic car. If you want to aim insults at any Commodore, aim them at the upcoming 2018 Commodore. That isn't even worthy of the nameplate.

"Shitbox".....Still a way , way better engine in a Falcon...HUGE difference...Our inline 4 litre 6 , and I do mean 'our'...is a fantastic engine...not yank import V6 that keeps having timing chain issues..The other thing about the Barra 6 is that the power and torque is ALWAYS there..This is okay though..and it'll be sad to see it go but a bit of respect please for a real Aussie car , the mighty Ford Falcon..I have a FG XR6 by the way so I know how good they are and an AU ll with massive kms...no issues at all...

Ugh, always gotta be one that has to come into a nice convo swinging their dick around. The Falcon is a fantastic car, but at no point was anyone saying it wasn't. No need to come into a positive conversation being an arse.

Great review, the Commodores and Falcons are by far my favourite cars, the inclusions for the money are always great and I particularly like the seats as I find them much softer and more comfortable than the hard types so often used in other models. Such a shame they are coming to an end. 😭

I drove down the M1 and the entire portion of The Great Ocean Road in my 05' V6 Calais. Absolutely loved every minute of it and its so true. Even in the older version of the Commodore/Calais range its so comfortable and the lumbar support works wonders when soaking up the miles. Even fuel consumption was decent too in the old beast with an average of about 8.4L/100kms M1 stretch then about 9.5L-10.5L around The Great Ocean Road. Will have to do the drive again in my next Calais.

Need to do one of these with the SS versions. We need to hear that engine on a nice long drive, on a nice long video. Some shots from the outside with a bit less music would be fantastic. There aren't too many videos showcasing the sound of the bi-modal.

Same here. I always dreamt about owning one brand new and told my father I would own a Commodore one day. Surely enough I bought a VZ Calais and I love it heaps. I'll be getting a VF Calais as my next car. It is a shame that production shut down. I was the plant on its last day and I have to say, it was a bittersweet time.

Great review, I would say most of what was said applies to the VE SV6 that my son has. A great Aussie car that just eats up the miles on long trips and doesn’t leave you like you’ve gone a couple of rounds with Iron Mike. Crying shame that the boof heads in Detroit and the unions in Australia stuffed the whole thing up. Great to see an Aussie reviewer not trashing the locals.

The forward collision / lane departure warning is completely useless on VF Commodore variants with it. It doesn’t apply brakes if it senses a collision, only primes brakes so they work quicker and flashes a red warning sign on heads up display and beeps. Good thing it doesn’t apply brakes too as it will go off on false alarm way too much to be considered a useful piece of equipment. Lane departure doesn’t control steering wheel only beeps on left or right side of speakers depending on which side you venture over on, lane departure warning works to a adequate degree. Default setting is off when you start the car as long as it’s not turned on previously. It’s almost like Holden knew the technology was a piece of shit. Cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, reverse camera works well and the automatic park is a cool party trick although you have to select reverse and drive or reverse and first in the manual and drive the car in controlling the brake or brake and clutch in the manual. Newer versions of this technology on other cars will do braking and gear changes automatically. To be fair it was 2013 when Holden introduced this technology. The in car entertainment system MyLink (Mystink) is rooted. Bluetooth paired connections will drop out if you skip too many tracks, Navigation has lost my trust when relied upon to navigate away from suburbs, sometimes I compare what MyLink and Apple maps on iPhone consider routes home and they are completely different (Apple is never wrong) Pandora function doesn’t work since Pandora is not longer available in Australia. No DAB radio. CD/DVD player ditched in series 2 . Anyway to criticise the Holden Commodore for those short comings is really nitpicking, all the good points mentioned in the review are true. You can fit two booster seats and a baby seat along the backseat, a lot of bigger shitbox 4wds can’t do that. Cheapish to service and insure in Australia, I’ve owned a VK, VY VE and 2x VFs never had a mechanical failure. It’s a shame time had to move on past the Holden Commodore, but with electric cars coming over the horizon Cars like the Holden Commodore where never going to be here forever.

You do seem to know your onions pal. I’ve got one of the last sv6 Calais, great car , all things in the article basically true, however, I can’t always trust the sat-Nav. , ( upgrades seem to be an ugly rabbit hole). Too many blind spots in rear vision though the warning system for passing cars works well, (it needs to). Front pillars too thick, (air bags), you have to learn to look around them on corners and roundabouts. Too much chrome around driver, often catches glare. Mirrors too small for good rear vision . For music I run my I-pod , works well, all I need. Overall still best car I’ve ever owned and now a bargain ; made Feb.2018, sold new Oct. 2018, bought by me Jan.2019 at 7000 k’s ,$20k off new price. What more could I ask? Davox.

@@FiendishlyDelightedSefto your wrong about everything. In 2015, australian taxi comission found that 87.45% of taxis were using some form of ford falcons. There is good reason why falcons get called taxis, as the statistics show, it dominated the industry that relies upon reliability. The holden 3.6 has always been a joke of an engine always outdone by the barra in every way. Only have to take a look at the second hand market to count how many falcons over over 700k kms. I know a holden and ford wrecker who tells me there is far greater demand for the 3.6 v6 than the barra simply because they dont last anywhere near as long and are nowhere near as refined. But then again everyone knows an inline 6 is a far superior layout to a v6 due to its inherent perfect balance. The 3.6 v6 had more issues than i could count-blowing up, timing chains snapping, pcv issues, ticking noises, water pump leaks, oil leaks, coil pack fails and the list goes on. Everyone knows that they have always been a shit engine. As for transmission gms 6 speeds are complete trash. Holden only took them because they were cheaper. Compared to what fords used, the German ZF 6 speed as used by Maserati, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Rolls royce and bentley. Cant even compare the two. One was used on 300k dollar cars, there is good reason they chose the zf not a cheap american 6 speed. Nobody disputes the falcons 6 cylinder was better than holdens nor the transmission, the only ground holden boys can stand on is that they have a decent ls v8. That is it. The falcon has always had the superior driveline. Argue all u want about v8s, but the holden rattletech/lfx has always been a joke. The fact that your defending what is widely regarded the worst australian engine ever in probably the worst australian car ever tells me enough about your car knowledge.

I get that the Commodore is an Australian car. but you just spent over 10 minutes talking like it will be around for another 40 years. this is an out going model. and who in their right mind would still feel patriotic about Holden when it clearly it doesn't feel the same about its people in Australia. not to mention the massive value drop lurking once it's no longer made here. my hard earn and commen sense will stay away from this. if you still really want one wait until after the fact you'll be very suprised to see the drop in value in one of these. new or second hand. that's my Car Advice of the week for you.

Why does it look like this guy is extremely squased in between the driver seat and wheel? His arms are far too bent to be comfortably driving for long periods of times.

MY16 SV6 Black is still in runout. The 6-cyl motor has stopped production, so this is the 'last' VFII V6 you can get. Drive away $38,990 at the moment.

CarAdvice.com I just picked one up and absolutely love it. It's very good value... I paid only $36,990 less trade from a previous vehicle. It's plenty of car for the money and is great size for he family. It's a shame these won't exist by next year.. that's why I decided to get one now. I would recommend. Definitely not a bogan mobile! The review is spot on to my experience also. Thanks

3 things I hate about the VF Commodore SV6 Black Edition. - 1 it's not a V8 - 2 it's not a V8 - 3 it's not a V8

The sv6 is about $12000 cheaper than the base model ss, Depending on age, driver history ect $500 cheaper pa for insurance give or take, about $300 pa cheaper for registration and around 2-3 km per liter better fuel economy than a v8. If you live in one of our overpopulated cities I don't see the point in all the long term extra costs if you are rarely if ever going to be able to use its true power (not sure if you legally could on out roads)

I do things out of spite Plus the V6 these days has more than enough power really.

If you move to the us you can get a v8 for the same price as the v6.

Engine came from Australia, body came from Australia, Dash components from Sunshine Victoria. Maybe some of the electronics come from China, but that's most cars.
