Caran d'Ache Gouache Pan Set Review

Disclaimer: This product is designed for children but is popular with adult painters, so I bought a set to try out. My review is from an adult standpoint so it may seem overly critical but if you want to get this for a student it is really wonderful. For an adult gouache experience, it falls a bit flat for me. I would consider this more of a tempera cake than a gouache. I paid $32 for Blick art materials but the price fluctuates: shrsl.com/4pv3g

Pros:
Beautiful packaging/sturdy tin
Nice color Selection
Colors mix well
Mixing space provided
Tube of white gouache provided
The included brush is nice
Cons:
The paint is transparent and the white gouache included is semi-transparent, I think it is a zinc white (A titanium white would be more opaque and useful)
I think the price is high for this quality, you could get a set of 12 Shinhan gouache tubes for the same price and it would be more useful as a gouache in my opinion (Shihan tubes: amzn.to/3UfP1oa )
Bottom line:
These aren't bad but I wouldn't classify them as gouache, they are more like an opaque watercolor or tempra. They are very saturated though and as a school-grade product they are great, but also kind of expensive for a school grade product (the retail is around $50 for this set!) but if you want a portable palette with intense color this is a good product. It just boils down to how you want to use it. It's definitely not for everyone.
