This video is about Caran D'Ache Neocolor II
Written Review - www.theartgearg...
I've had these beautiful crayons or Pastels, if you will, for quite a while now and to be honest, I have been busting a gut to review them. As I stated in the video to accompany this review, I always try my level best to remain completely impartial with regards these reviews. Honesty and transparency are incredibly important to me, however, I would be telling lies if I said I didn't really enjoy reviewing Caran D'Ache products. There is a serious level of craftsmanship attached to each and every product I have reviewed thus far from Caran D'Ache and I hope that the Neocolor is true to type and delivers the same high standards the others have.
The first thing I noticed about the Neocolor, well, actually noticed is not quite the right word, the feeling I got when I first opened my 30 set of Caran D'Ache Neocolor, was that of childhood memories. All those years ago as a child in primary school, with little pots filled with those chisel tipped crayons. We would always rip the paper off them not really understanding the papers true purpose and would scrub as hard as we could to try and create bright vibrant colours on massive sheets of paper. but enough of the childhood reminiscing.

I enjoy your reviews, chat away good sir, don't worry, it gives the review a human feel to it...I would rather watch a 20 min video that is interesting, than a 5-10 min video that is robotic

Please don't let people change YOU! You enjoy doing video's with waffle as you call it! That is what make video's great not just good info but when you can tell the person giving it is enjoying themselves. If you worry about the time you won't have as much fun. Please don't let people take your Joy away. Some people will never be happy no matter what you do. And it's you tube. You see the video length BEFORE the you click on it!!! So WHY are they clicking?? To be Trolls! There was a You Tuber who did great coloring book reviews. Then she had someone comment that her voice was really deep and if she was a woman. Every video she brought up that she just had a deep voice. The rest of us tried to reassure her that yes we know hey Actress Kathleen Turner has a deep voice and clearly a woman. But that one troll kept commenting. She stopped making video's. Which is such a shame because she was really good and more than that Loved doing it. Please don't let that happen. I know your really nice but if you have someone harassing you to change and you have ALREADY addressed it you can BLOCK THEM. Anyway great review I love these crayons. Your so right the first time I used one the first thing I thought was " Why didn't I have theses as a Kid!?" haha I have 20. Thinking about getting the whole set. Loved the video! Thanks!

Great video Harry!! 😆 Don't cut down on the "waffle"...in fact, add some syrup and butter. 😂 Those who complain, well they can bugger off (I used the term correctly, right?😉) lol. I appreciate that you cover all of the information that any artist should be looking at for their projects. I COMPLETELY know how you feel about adult conversation. If hubby isn't here, I'm only talking to the dogs. 😃 It's easier for me now, in fact when we have to go out, I have to remember how to talk to people. When I was much younger raising my babies, it was extremely hard being home and having no adult conversation. As I have gotten older, well I have just become an even bigger introvert. I'm gonna send you a msg through facebook...I have a quick question. Take care my friend. You are doing a fabulous job!! 🤗

I love your reviews and being a severely disabled person myself I totally understand how not having adult conversations for long periods of time can make people talk a lot about everything and anything. Meds don’t help, mine make me waffle like crazy. Even if you do go off on a tangent... does it really matter? Your honest reviews are still being made and I always look at your videos before buying a new product. So thank you for saving me money. Not being able to go out means I buy everything on line and I need to know how the art equipment works before laying out some serious cash.

Okay I think I'm in love with these pastels. Thank you for your review. I like your informative honest reviews. The more you "waffle" :) the more we learn. Plus it let's us, your subscribers/friends get to know you better. When you were talking about remembering being little and coloring, I swear I could smell my old box of Crayola crayons from waaaay back when. Don't stop being you....I like you just as you are, I think you put your heart and soul into these reviews you do and are as informative and truthful as possible because you are a nice person and want to make sure we are informed as possible, so when we go to make an investment purchase of these materials we know what to look for. Thank you for that, because $$$ is not easy to come by, but sometimes you just have to have some new art supplies !!! :). Peace

I love listening to you talk Harry, and I hope you continue your banter in these videos. It's nice to know your thoughts on all these art supplies you review here. Great review on these, thanks for showing how well they work with the addition of water! I also like the tips you shared, really handy. The shavings one is definitely a fun idea! I love watching your reviews and drawing along :D A bit on the Neocolor II. My first premium art supply as a child. I got the 84 set as a gift when I was around 6 ish and boy did they blow my mind back then!! They're so smooth and creamy and they work so well with water. Recently I found some of my old Neocolor crayons, they're like what 17 years old now? And they still worked really well! Only problem is that I've lost a lot of colours since we moved around a lot growing up. So I gotta get myself a new set now. Watching this definitely brought back a lot of pleasant memories :) Thanks for making this Harry! And I'd love to watch your speedpainting videos!

I love that you talk, it feels like you are talking directly to the viewer and anticipating what they are going to ask. These products are very expensive and I want to know as much information as possible from someone I trust as I can get and you give out that information for free. You showed me today how good these are in real time which I have not seen before as video's using this product are normally sped up and they seem to work a lot better than I thought (much easier to activate than I thought). Sheesh some people! Fantastic review Harry, much appreciated :) Congratulations being in Coloured magazine .

Hey gab away!! I love your videos!! I have the 30 set and some open-stock additions. I LOVE these pastels. They are so easy, fun and beautiful. I love using them in my art journal! Thank you for a great review. In regards to the metallics. I ended up getting the Creatacolor of their 10 metallics and they are GORGEOUS. Especially on a black or toned paper. I believe I'm going to the art store today to pick up a few more open stock of the neocolonial II's that I don't have! Thanks!!

Can't and shouldn't please everyone. I like your "rambles". You are a real person. If people want plastic robots let 'em go elsewhere. Very good and detailed review. It is easier to wet paper with a real watercolour brush. Prefereably a fairly thick one that can hold a good deal of water. The waterbrushes are great for detailed work, but not so much for wetting paper or large aras. :) My first meeting with Caran Dáshe was in school and excactly the Neocolor II. They are amazing. I want them sooo bad, but is on a tight budget for now. Everything they do, at least their artist products, are just so close to perfect you pretty much get.

Absolutely, I am totally with you, I find it so difficult to find flaws in Caran D'Ache products, and I really try because I want to give a really balanced review of all products, but at the same time I am not going to make stuff up in the interest of balance. I don't know how they do it, I absolutely love their art materials and if I had more money my house would look like the Caran D'Ache wearhouse lol.

It is a rare thing to find companies who doesn't compromise on the quality in order to meet a target price. Their products are expensive yes, but they do deliver every time. Caran D'ashe and Faber Castell are along with Winsor and Newton by far my favoriet brands of art supplies. In most things in life I am so not a "Brand" nerd, but when it comes to my art supplies I am very much so. -Because I've had my expectations met or broken enough times to know what I like. :D

Don't worry about chatting too much. It's part of you and I understand - totally - what you mean, as I am on my own during the week as well. Not because I have health issues but because I am long-term unemployed. Hubby goes out to work very early and I don't see him until tea-time. A lot of the time I'm in the house because I can't get out to spend money. Yes, I could go for a walk but there's no way I'm walking to any of our parks all by myself. A 14 year old was raped in broad daylight in the small park near us so that put me right off going anywhere with small numbers of people in the vicinity, which is why I end up in Town. I can't do this without money though..and I don't have much of that..and when I do I buy pens, etc online lol. By the way, I draw more than I used to (I started off colouring only in adult colouring books) but 1) I kept receiving free pencils from Cult Pens and 2) I have Artist's Tiles where I can practice drawing animals (from references, I can't draw from memory) and hubby said I've improved over time. The other day I drew an ocelot and I love him. I might post him on Twitter at some point but - because it's a copy off someone else I'm worried about copyright and stuff. You see, I ramble like you do. Nowt wrong with it lol.

Jane Metcalfe Jane Metcalfe I know exactly how you feel Jane and you are right, as much as I hate the fact that people feel they need to stay in rather than go for a walk because of a minority of monsters, I would much rather people be safe at the same time. It's all very well and good telling people you won't let things like that scare you from doing what you want, however, the alternative, no matter how slight, has to be taken into consideration. You should post your work, just contact the owner of the image and let them know you've drawer it for your own practise and love of drawing and ask them if it is okay to post it on your social networking sites. I'm sure the answer would be yes providing you give credit to the original image in your post. Hope you are well Jane

Harry I feel the same way you do I understand completely. I had back surgery in 2006 went back to work for almost a year. I have the rods and screws in the L4 L5. And I must say when it's a bad day it's a bad day and a rain day isn't my best days at all. So as you I don't get out and I won't hold anyone back nor want anyone to think that I want them to hold my hand and feel that they should miss out on their life and coming and going. Wow! You are a wonderful artist! Thank you, Harry, for making your wonderful videos. Your research and information / links you provide are incredibly comprehensive. Yes, I too love Carandache products, particularly the neocolor two pastels. The only criticism I can think of is that I bemoan the fact that Carandache does not make pan or tube paint except for their gouache ( which is also wonderful). At this point, I’m saving up to buy some of their wc pencils, also. Thanks to your videos, I can now have a guide to decide on those, also. The one thing I would like to ask you: How do you think these water soluble pastels compare to the various Carandache wc pencils? Also: I use a hand crank pencil sharpener on my neocolor two pastels, save the shavings, and use said shavings as pan paints, which works out really well.

Great review Harry! I remember those dreadful old school crayons, I had a little chuckle when you mentioned them:) they were really bad tho, These Neocolors look great especially when you added water, I think they would be good for mixed media, and hey don't worry what people say, I like to listen to your reviews and so do a lot of people, its hard to please all the people all the time, just keep going my friend your doing a great job!

smoothie77 Thanks a million Smoothie mate and you are so right about the Neocolor, they are fantastic for mixed media and they are excellent to use coloured pencil on top of as well. Actually, as you could probably see from the demonstration, although they are watercolour, they behave a bit like gouache, the colours are so rich and vibrant and the colour range they have in the 126 set is just outstanding. Any way thanks a million mate for stopping by and I actually got one of your subscribers stopping by on my Faber Castell Polychromos review asking a question and introducing herself and the lady let me know that she came to my channel after seeing a comment I left and you responded to on your video. All the very best my friend and take care.

I like your supposed ramblings! You've an amazing talking voice that is loverly to listen too! I've had to get a few for some classes & I bought just 3 since I've purchased the spring set. They are so creamy & wonderful. I'm trying to save up for the bigger set. Thank you, great review & thanks for talking about the metallic crayons. That's been a problem for several people that do the coloring books. I used them for the first time because of TAMERA Laporte with Willing.ning Thanks for the reminder about the colored pencil magazine! So I think I'm going to get the 30 set first, I'd like the 40 set but have you noticed the big price jump between the 30 & 40 sets? It breaks down too paying a lot more per crayon.. Actually Jerry's has the singles for a good price. So does Blick, but buying the sets are better priced on Amazon. They don't sell the single ones anyway, 😉🙃 So i may get the 30 set then get some singles, who knows! I just subscribed to someone who mainly does the books, & she had a set of 30 then opted for the set of 84. Now that was a price jump👍🏻😃...anyway she was testing the silver out & it didn't break down at all using the brush on the crayon itself, no color at all came off onto the water brush. Now the gold & copper did just fine, but not the silver. It didnt even break down on the paper after coloring a swatch then wetting it & trying too move it around. Why have it if it wont dissolve with the water? Something for you to look into maybe??!! Thanks so much & as you can see i also tend to ramble on! I do it too everything & everyone. I believe its from being home also without human interaction, especially now when I'm under the weather. Your painting you showed is very intense, lots of talent tho! Is all of your art so intense? Thanks for all the great information on these great mediums! I do love the ones i have!

SO, your viewers are just gonna have to bear with it because when I consider your content on your channel and all of that time, effort and knowledge that you share with people You are obviously a very incredibly generous human being and a VERY TALENTED ARTIST! So, personally, I am very grateful, very grateful and can overlook your excessive chattiness, dear. I did notice it and now that you've explained why it occurs, I just think you're a fine person, Harry,, Thank you so much for your excellent channel content and keep up the good work! Bravo, Harry!!

Hi Rhonda you are too kind, thank you so very much. I had an awesome childhood, I grew up in the 70s as a kid and 80s as a teenager. I was so lucky and had a lot of wonderful friends back in N Ireland, school friends, football friends and friends who lived in the same street. I was always out, I went to school, came home and very rarely done homework hence how my bulb is quite dim, and from school I would drop my school bag at home, get changed and straight back out again. I joined the army at 16 and was always around other people as a soldier, I loved meeting people, going to parties, hosting parties etc. I have to say one thing, I go through periods were I feel bitter about my injury and losing my job as a soldier, but one thing I can’t ever complain about was my life before my injury, I had the most amazing life. So since starting out in art and making videos I Found myself just talking and talking and talking. Thank you so much for your wonderfully kind comment I really appreciate it.

Hi Harry, these crayon are beautiful, they dissolve really well. I was thinking to try them and after your review I definitely will, thank you. And please, do not stop making long video just because some say so. Your videos are full of great information on the pencil "world" and I like to know more about it. Haters gonna hate! Keep up the good work and thanks again :)

OMG! First I've been a long time subscriber and have always loved your videos and all your "rambling". You don't go off on tangents, at least that I don't see, or hear, but you discuss more info on the item or art related information, hence what your channel is all about right. I have also have had major health issues the last couple years and I no longer am able to work and art also saved my life as well. So I totally understand being home alone with no one else to talk to, I do have 3 cats and 2 dogs. They are all quite attentive to my constant chatter through out the day but they aren't that great in talking back, so I have to carry on their side of the conversations as well and I respond for them. Therefore I constantly find myself trying to justify to friends and family, and even the occasional poor soul who calls my phone by mistake, that's the reason for my endless babble now,it because it's so nice to have a grown up to talk too. especially since my husband of 32 years recently left, wait, maybe it was all my constant chatter? O, Just kidding, that was something else entirely, but anyway, love your videos, ignore the complainers without any constructive input with positive alternatives, they will always find things to complain about anyway, and you can't make everyone happy.

I am glad you alk and my channel began for the same reasons. I have gone through a serious bout of depression/anxiety in the past year, and honestly, I dont care about makeup reviewing anymore, lol. So superficial and I have seen it all. The artist community is refreshing and a whole new world. Say on! I am good at talking back! I get this 30 pack in less than 2 weeks along with Derwent Graphitint watercolor pencils. I am into mixing things up ;)

I didn't have any of these when you made this review. But I bought a set of 15 towards the end of summer. And I LOVE them! They are superb. I soon added to the collection and now have 35 different colours. I wish I had bought the 40 set to begin with because then I'd have a nice big tin to put them in. I am amazed at how pigmented they are and how well they mix and blend. I use a disposable paper pallet to mix colours on or I go straight to the paper or take from the crayon onto a brush direct. I can't get enough of using them.

I am 70, look 50 (really), I have back issues that create pain constantly and so even when I do feel good I am scred to drive because of all the narcotics I take to deal with the constant pain. The weird part is I do not look sick, which makes people think I am aloof and that is why I don't go visiting. Onlu now my daughter is beginning to understand and I am scared my husband of twenty years wikk get tired of this. So, I unde r stand you, do whatever makes your life more tolerable and talk as much as you feel the need. Imwoukd venture to say that half of the people doing journals are using it as a form of therapy, and this is a wonderful thing.

Hi There, thank you so much for your kind comment, I have thought about live streaming, however I am not sure what I would do in the live stream to make it interesting for other people to be part of. Also, when I make my videos, they actually take days because I can only sit still for a short peroid without having to get up and move about. So I take a few minutes video, pause it, then come back later and pick up from where I left off. Recently I actually done a smal live stream on instagram were I was just drawing my most recent drawing of Batman. I actually really enjoyed it because like you say, I was able to talk directly to people watching as they were asking me questions. It was just like having a bunch of friends over for tea lol. It is something I am really strongly considering, but I don't know if I should live stream a review or a drawing, maybe both actually, reviewing a product while drawing with it. Ill definately think about it and thank you so much for your support and feedback. What do you think a live stream should be?

Oh Harry; I just started your video, but I had to pause it to say: I don't think you talk too much at all! I'm a fairly new subscriber, but the videos I have watched have been informative, and also enjoyable! I appreciate how you make me feel like we are friends, having a chat. If I only wanted general info, I would go to the manufacturer's site, and just read the data there. It never ceases to amaze me how rude some people can be! It's a lot of work to produce a quality video like yours and, instead of being appreciative, they feel the need to complain. Please ignore these ignorant people, and do not change your format. Chat with us all you want, I am happy to listen! I read on another of your videos that you were disabled in the service of your country; God bless you for your sacrifice! God bless your family, and your wife who loves and appreciates you! I am an American who was happy to visit the UK a few years ago, and enjoyed it very much! I'

I am at home by myself living in a country where I know very few people ( with my dog though :) all day long until my husband comes I talk to my self, the dog and God all the time haha:) :) After I had been pretty sick of fibromyalgia for about 6 years I started painting and drawing ( did some doodling and drawing funny characters when I was teenager and a young mother ) Since then I draw, paint whatever comes out of my head most days. I love it and it saves my sanity:) I love neocolors l and ll. Have not used them a lot but am getting ready to do more of it. Thank you for your help and your personal touch in your video :)
