Let's see if this is you. You've done pretty well in life and you've earned the right to a prestigious executive car. You'd rather like a Mercedes-Benz - but not a dull-looking one like the guy over the road drives. If that three-pointed star could be mounted on the bonnet of something that cuts more of a dash - something a little more cutting edge - you'd be interested. And you'd be Mercedes CLS-Class target market. A cross between saloon and a coupe, this model has long pioneered an appealing niche within the executive sector as a highly distinctive proposition with comfortable room for four but styling that suggests otherwise. Though extremely refined and silky smooth on the road, it also has a subtly sportier flavour than the E-Class on which it's based, especially in the faster, more efficient and more sophisticated improved second generation form we look at here as a potential used buy.

Owned my 2015 CLS 220 Bluetec for just over a year now. Here are my takeaway's: 1. The 220 engine is underpowered and laggy. I'm frequently annoyed at the lag pulling out at roundabouts. On the flip side it's very economical. 2. Mine has the AMG suspension, which means stiffer springs. In combination with the bigger wheels, this ruins the ride. I'll be changing my springs to the standard non AMG setup as soon as possible. 3. The 7 speed gearbox programming is poor. It's a very clever box which can lock the torque converter in every gear. This is great for performance, but it results in the box sometimes becoming very confused. 4. If your bonnet catch fails, which they frequently do, you have to destroy the front grille to replace them. Grilles arent cheap. 5. There is no longer a switch to put the car in neutral if the vattery dies. There used to be an override switch in previous merc's but it's gone. 6. The real exhaust tips often rattle against the fake exhaust tips, especially in the cold. 7. The sat nav is truly awful. Unusable, like most ten year old systems. 8. The finish on the AMG wheels chips off if you look at it wrong. 9. The full open/closure system fails intermittently. 10. The standard stero is rubbish. I work in music so I'm probably a bit fussy here, but it's worse than a standard stereo from Jag. Plus points: Healights are the best I've ever experienced. Running/repair costs are reasonable so far. Handles better than a car its size should. Honestly...I think if I could go back twelve months, I'd find a V6 diesel instead of the 220, and I'd make sure it had the upgraded stereo. Or...a V6 Jag' XF. Driven severl since buying the CLS, they ride better, handle better, gearbox is programmed better (believe it's the same box), stereo is better...I prefer the styling of the CLS over the XF, but an XF costs nearly half as much at the time of writing.
