I've got an earlier 451 diesel model, I bought it back in 2011 when it was 5 months old, I agree that you definitely feel all the bumps, the gearbox does take a bit of getting used to, at just shy of 150000 miles, mainly motorway mileage, only used for getting back and forth to work, I wouldn't change it, not even for a later 453 model as although it's a small engine, my little diesel reaches nearly 90 miles per gallon as an average, emissions are very low, even though it still doesn't qualify for clean air tax zones as it's a euro 5 not a euro 6. It's been a fantastic vehicle, surprisingly practical, cheap to run, where I live, it's the most practical vehicle I could own

How come I get 55 mpg on a 2010 diesel 800cc. 😊
@andrewgage6942 Жыл бұрын
@@timh132 is yours a 45 or 54bhp model? The 54bhp returns much better mpg figures for some reason, I also work nights so I don't have to rush, harsh accelerate , I very rarely touch the brakes and 80%+ of my driving is motorway driving, my average speed is around 52mph which seems to be when it runs most efficiently, I never use it for short journeys, for those, wherever possible I walk or cycle

@@timh132 it's probably the best little car I've ever owned, when I was thinking of buying a small car, I looked at the Smart and the Toyota IQ, at the time diesel was much cheaper, I also wanted automatic, being single I wasn't worried about carrying passengers, living in the centre of town, I wanted something small and easy to park, as much as I like the Toyota IQ, the automatic only came on the 1.2 petrol, that also incurred road tax, the Toyota IQ was only available in petrol format, so the Smart diesel won the day as there's no road tax to pay, it's cheap to run and keep running as I have taken out a service plan with Mercedes, and I have to say, the service I've received from Sytner Mercedes in Bristol has been superb, they have looked after me and my car extremely well over the past 12 years

I've owned the first and second generation of these, and they're amazing. It's more fun to drive than any other car I've owned, and it's completely at home on the motorway unless it's blowing a gale. I'll certainly get one of these new ones when my old one is finally disposed of. It has 120K miles on it, and looks good for a lot more yet, so it probably won't be soon.

Is yours a petrol or deisel ? I'm considering a petrol . How do you find the auto transmission .....is the reviewers comments justified? Thanks ....

A really thorough and well thought out review, reminiscent in delivery of William Woollard. I think the description and criticism of the previous model is justified of the original 450, but the 2007-2014 ‘451’ was a massive improvement in ride,refinement etc and more on a par with the ‘453’ tested here. It’s pointless comparing Smart (forTwo) to other cars, their buyers tend to buy Smart specifically and for this reason and are unlikely to look at other brands. As always since 1998 it’s a bit of a straight ‘love it or hate it’ choice.

Well we test drove the 0.9L turbo today after watching your superb review. It was a great drive and much better than the 2007 Fortwo 1L Passion he owns. I owned a 2010 Toyota iQ3 Multidrive for a few years and this 2016 model is about the same experience.

I have owned a Smart since 2009 and now have 30,000 miles, mostly city driving. It's not great on the interstate, but in town it excels!.

As a 451 owner, I didn't necessarily agree with everything. Nonetheless, this is far and away the most comprehensive review I have seen.

An excellent and comprehensive review. We traded our 2013 Passion owned from new for a 2016 0.9 turbo “White Edition” four years ago and they are as chalk and cheese. Love the 453’s performance, ride, gearbox, space and tech. Also the heated leather seats and other toys, sat nav etc. In the city it’s a joy (and a hoot) and I wouldn’t drive anything else. As for the looks I really didn’t like the 453 upon it’s release thinking it an ugly duckling compared to the original but over time it’s grown on me and I find it rather cute now!

The old one looks much better. I have been so intent on buying one, they can be found used really cheap now. But realize that I will need another car so then it feels a bit pointless but they are damn cool.

😮 I do find it hard to believe they ever made this eco car to run toxic fossil fool fuel. they should have been electric right from the start and the concept was and all wheel drive city run about it was electric with a battery and a skateboard chassis with concept of being put into place which was set up by swatch and green peas and the toxic carbon a factors got holder than toxified it. such a shame. there's never delivered what it could do with proper engineering but it is a lovely little car now. made a bit ugly😮
