I used Pine Sol on my '01 cr250 cylinder and power valve parts with great success. One to two days (if you have the time), a little scrubing like you would with any non mechanical method of cleaning and it was perfect. Just make sure everything is submerged fully.

what i showed a friend is that when i clean a carb i put parts in a container and set the container in my vibrating foot bath and the vibration allows the cleaner you use to scrub the minor holes and spaces you can`t reach

SOAK IN FULL STRENGHT, “S-100" for about 4 hours. Will not hurt rubber or plastic parts or metal or paint. Will dissolve all gunk! You may have to do some light scrubbing with toothbrush in areas of extreme grime but that should remove with little effort! If you have a sonic cleaner S-100 used in that works even better!!!

I soaked an Edelbrock (that suffered a severe long term fuel seepage through the lid gasket) in Pine Sol, and it did an okay job. It completely etched the shiny finish off the carb and turned it a dark dull gray, but didn't really clean it. Just did an okay job of making the gunk easier to spray out with a can of B-12. The $30 paint can of Chem Dip I bought for the internal parts and linkage was virtually useless compared to the pine sol and B-12. The B-12 can was by far the most effective in just getting all the gunk off. Next time I rebuild a carb, I'll skip all the soaking and just spray the shit out of it with B-12.

Fitz ....Primer quality (cheaper) laquer thinner in 5 gal cans if u do more than 1...auto body supply👍
@8432926 жыл бұрын
Fitz, I just did the "spray the s**t out of it" method with B-12... didn't work entirely. It was amazing at removing surface varnish (the syrupy stuff) but didn't do a thorough enough job to keep the carb from becoming immediately clogged again. In other words it didn't get the jets cleaned out well enough. I even used a small wire to make sure it was clear. Bottom line, I think a soak and a spray is probably the best way to do the job once, instead of having to pull it off and do it twice (like I'm about to do.)
@lt.schlechtnacht94144 жыл бұрын
This did work very well but it seems like you can only use it once. I soaked a quadrajet in it and it cleaned it perfectly put when I put another carburetor in it it barely did anything. Great video though
@retireddec047 жыл бұрын
thanks for this tip! I tried it, worked well. I used it to soak an old carter after it was prewashed in diesel. Not a "restored" finish but did the job. And I can reuse it, unlike carb cleaner.

Years ago I would restore old model airplane engines by soaking them in ethylene glycol antifreeze in a slow cooker. Those small engines used to be (and sometimes still are) run on fuel that is 20% caster oil. That oil would cause them to be *totally* gummed up and useless after a period of storage. Overnight in slow cooker with ethylene glycol antifreeze was an amazingly effective and well known cleaning technique. It essentially stripped the engine clean of all the thick hard gunk. I looked up Pine Sol and apparently it contains ethylene glycol also. I suspect that ethylene glycol is the ingredient in Pine Sol that is making this work so well. I also suggest that you try plain ethylene glycol antifreeze and see how that works. My guess is that it will be very effective. (And, of course, keep your pets away. They seem to like drinking it and it is poisonous).

I did the pine sol clean. It was one of the worst things I could have done. It stripped not only the gasoline deposits, but 100% of the protective coatings on the metal. Every bit of steel rusted within a few days. 100% of the aluminum got white oxidation on it within a few days. DO NOT clean your carb with pine sol if you care at all about the appearance of your carburetor.

Most of the Holley carbs are cast in some sort of zinc alloy as well as, I believe the Autolite/Motorcraft are as well. There are exceptions, like some Holleys such as certain 4150 and 4160s and all 4010, 4011s and their clones sold under the Summit brand. Those carbs are cast in an aluminum alloy. Other than the problems that surfaced from Pinesol and what I understand to be zinc plated steel, did the Pinesol clean the carb castings of zinc and aluminum equally as well? How about those thin strips of either Nylon or Teflon that Holley uses as bearing surfaces on their throttle plate shafts? Did you come across any shaft binding after soaking? I would simply remove the throttle shafts before soaking if the throttle plate screws were easier to remove. Thanks for experimenting with different cleaning solutions because other than still being caustic, the newer formulations of carb cleaning/soaking solutions don't seem to work as well as they used to. Plus the newer solutions are expensive.
@ThunderHead2898 жыл бұрын
+William Charles on this 4100 i didnt encounter any issues thankfully. throttle didnt bind, i did remove the shafts where they are not on the carb in that last clip for a better clean so i could get my brush down the venturies. i wouldnt try it with my summit 600 as im sure it would ruin the finish. any carb part that was that yellowed zinc color is now dulled or silver, so that is something to consider. i wish they made berrymans bigger so one could simply dunk an entire carb. - i dont really want to pay for the drum size
@williamcharles94808 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I'm familiar with the Berrymans and agree that the quantity required would get pricy. It would be interesting to see the results, though. That chromate finish doesn't stand up to much cleaning no matter what you use it seems to me. If you need to get a really funked up carb clean, it's going to be pretty much gone from my past experience. Eastwood and maybe Summit has the spray on chromate, but I don't know if it will hold up very well.

Tobius is absolutely right! WD40 sucks as a lube, specific or generalized (whatever that is supposed to mean)! ...even after 40 attempts its not "perfect", sorry!...and I don't have to drink koolaid to doubt the horseshit fiction the marketing dept had printed on the can or published on their site...I go by my long-time experience, and that is that WD only "lubes" immediately after spraying and while wet, but leaves very little behind in terms of long-term lube. If you use WD as a "lube", you need to come back in a week and "lube" it again...screw that! It displaces water...BFD!...so does wiping off the dist cap, and spark plug wires... If I want a (light) lube, that works great and sticks around for a long time, I use Triflow...I sure as hell don't reach for WD...period!
