Excellent this just popped up in my feed as my old man is about to reassemble the carbs onto the fzr 400 we're bringing back to life! He's very old school so I'm gonna have to sit him down and put my Bose headphones on him full blast so he gets it all lol! We've had countless arguments about the carbs and the float bowls settings and this will definitely help cheers fella!

no worries mate. When im in the new workshop im gonna start doing bike teardowns from beginning to end and the er5 is going to be the first. Engine and everything

great explanation. can you do this test with the carbs on the bike with the bike sitting level🤔
@daveco12704 жыл бұрын
I plan on doing something like this with the CB750 carbs I just built. I want to check for leaks and double check float height with a clear tube. I've read on some forums not to use water. I'd rather not run gas through them while they're sitting on my bench, but I guess I could take them outside and set them up somewhere like you have yours.
@dirtygarageguy4 жыл бұрын
Water is fine - just make sure it's completly dry - and to do that I stick it in the oven at about 100 deg for 20 minutes
@daveco12704 жыл бұрын
@@dirtygarageguy thanks. I may blast everything really good with a hair dryer and compressed air rather the sticking the carbs in the oven. Do you take off the floats or any plastic parts beforehand... or is it not hot enough at 100 degrees to effect that stuff?
@dirtygarageguy4 жыл бұрын
Plastic parts? LOL I took the carbs completely apart - so there's nothing but ally

Hi, I love this method you have shown us, will it work on the Honda CX Carbs and if so where would the measure point be on these carbs. I'm new to this stuff, looking forward to the next episode of the CX rebuild. Thanks.

Ok, well the CX500 carbs have a hole at the bottom of the bowl (nearly every carb does) and theres a screw that inserts at 90 degrees to the hole. Thats the tap to open the fuel bowl just like in the video - hope this helps - matt
@stephent11179 жыл бұрын
+Pony Power Sorry Matt, what i need to know is at what point should the fluid levels come to on the CX float bowls. Thanks.
@dirtygarageguy9 жыл бұрын
Sorry mate lol The level is the same as most carbs to be set level where the float bowl meets the carb body, where the gasket sits, hope this is clear - matt
@bobibobo317 жыл бұрын
Hi, nice videos, sometimes funny :) Just to mention that even if the method is very correct the results might be wrong with WATER due to density difference vs gasoline. Also i find the level a bit high as i mostly have seen levels around 5mm under the seal plan, so far... Keep up !

Can this be done while the carb is still on the bike or does it have to be perfectly level?

If you have had bike raised at the back but stayed same height in the front with you have to change the float level or would the valve still shut off at the correct level? I know its a 2 year old video so if you can reply would be great thanks..
@dirtygarageguy6 жыл бұрын
Yes tipping the back will always change the level, however it depends how much you have raised the rear, to how much the level has changed. And the level will tip rather than change height. You should be ok, unless its extreme

+andy dodd - one thing is to make sure that your carbs aren't leaking, fuel or air. ALso make sure the vacuum lines aren't leaking. Dip them in a bowl of water and squeeze them and look for air bubbles. - matt

Hi mat I manage to get bike running but I have the same problem of running on one and I have done what you did on this video did you manage to find the problem as I can't seem to find another video on the carbs cheers
@dirtygarageguy7 жыл бұрын
no becasue the project changed and its still to come. Does it fire up when you rev above 3k? If it does then its your pilot jet that's blocked - by a new one
@Jaymo-bc5wo7 жыл бұрын
The Workshop nope only starts on choke then if I try opening the throttle it dies turn throttle with no choke it dies so I'm a bit confused at the moment
@dirtygarageguy7 жыл бұрын
your running lean, check for shit in the fuel line, air leaks, and your pilot jet sounds like its still blocked or restricted - is this for an ER5?
@Jaymo-bc5wo7 жыл бұрын
The Workshop yes er-5 I'm going to take carbs back off tomorrow and give them a good look over run the air line over them I tested the coils and the left side wasn't reading anything so I changed it for a good one has new plugs oil and filter fresh fuel so it can only be a jet problem

Thanks for the video dude! Though it sounds like you're getting a bit annoyed with yourself there with the baa baa baa thing :P I've head of this method, but not seen it in use til now. Always useful seeing how it should be done!

Rigal lol more annoyed at the sound of my own voice. I tend to ramble and I'm trying to get out of it on the videos. All about improving the content or whatever. I've been reviewing the older videos. Some of which need re-doing.

Pony Power Hehe, if anything, you're rambling more then you used to! Though don't forget it's better to ramble instead of uming and aring, or worse. Those awkard silences! Tell a few jokes take your time and make notes if you have to of what you need to cover/say. I'd be doing the same, but I'm very shy.

Let's say you have too low or too high fuel level - what could cause this? I just measured mine and it seems to be low, however everything insede the carb looks to be in perfect condition.
@dirtygarageguy8 жыл бұрын
+fps103 good question, you've jumped the gun abit but this is how it breaks down - If the fuel height is too high but the bike is running, the engine will have a tendency to display a rich running condition, which will make the throttle response slow. Fuel can also leak from the carb and obviously this is a fire risk. If the fuel height is too low, the engine will display a lean running condition, where the engine typically hesitates before accelerating or surges as the throttle is opened. It may also misfire when the throttle is closed. hope this helps - matt
@fps1038 жыл бұрын
I took a pic of my setup, as you can see the fuel level doesn't even reach the bottom of the carb... Am I doing something wrong? imgur.com/a/kx1iV
@dirtygarageguy8 жыл бұрын
+fps103 yes dude, number 1 and this is my fault I should of made it more clear is you need to point the measuring tube/pipes at the ground so the water flows out of them, this removes the air trapped in the pipes. The pipes NEED to be water only, no air. Secondly you need to hold the throttle butterflies open. - hope this helps - matt
