In this second and final video, we will remove the carb from this old outboard and see if we can get it running for a few seconds out of water.

Don't run that thing without the prop in water. Running the water pump without water causes a lot of wear.

I'm not worried about the impeller because it's of unknown age and would need to be replaced anyways.

Most motors low speed top needle about 3/4 to 1 turn and Bottom 1 1/2 about turn out you will know when you go to start it. You need the original pressurized tank to make it run. The pressurized tank is what keeps the motor running and provides the fuel throughout the motor.

That float in the carb changes up tp a plastic float a must do as the varnish on the old cork does peel off . Also be careful of those 2 screws on the high and low speed knobs hard to fine new ones.

You need to use extra oil in these years they don't have bearings to run 50 to 1

Dont know if you know or not shouldnt run out of water for more than a few seconds destroy rubber waterpump impellar. Carb settings are 1/1/2 turn for top low speed from lightly seated closed and around 3/4-1 turn for bottom high speed. If it coughs just turn the top low speed counter clockwise in small increments till it evens out at idle when warmed up & leave highspeed alone till your on a boat or in a test tank. Im an outboard mechanic for many years.I get the feeling your done with this motor after this video,LOLLL Good Luck.... Glenn P.

I'm not too worried about the impeller, I plan on replacing it before I hit the water this summer. Thanks for the Carb settings too, I'll toss those on and give them a shot later. Thanks for the advice!

I agree with this person, my mechanic insisted on the whole thing immersed in a barrel of water, because the water lubes the gears & acts as back pressure for the exhaust gas.

Yep, the one throwing out the fuel is actually the one that blows air pressure back into the tank, to keep it pressured up, after the initial prime with the hand bulb. I have the exact same motor. 10 hp sea horse.

I did end up with one of the proper tanks, but I think if I ever run the motor on a boat I'll probably convert it over to run on a normal line. I'll have to give this motor a run again sometime, it's been a while since I have started it up

In between the carb and air box there should be a spark arrestor screen.

Awesome video! Thanks for sharing! This was a great educational video for newbies like myself who savvy ourselves as DIYers! I am a new boat (Whaly 500R) and new outboard engine (2021 15HP Honda) owner as in the last 2.5wks and still in the pre launch checklist phase before my first outing with the family. Anyway that aside, I love the instruction and angles you provide for how to analyze and repair the various parts of the outboard. Even though I haven’t had a boat or outboard motor before, I am totally interested in buying an older (more affordable) higher HP engine to repair and use on my new boat as a future minimal cost- but kick a** upgrade to the vessel. I have worked on cars and had minor auto mechanic employment in my lifetime that has made me confident in my comprehension and skill sets, but videos like yours are everything to people like me. Great teaching. Thanks again and I’ll be subscribing to see what else I can learn about old outboard restorations or anything else I can in the future! Have a great day!

Thanks for the comment! Great work on the prelaunch checklist, the amount of times I have responded to distress calls for people who failed to do that is nuts, especially first time boaters. The guy I actually learned a lot from on KZbin before I got into outboards myself was "Dangar Stew". He has a lot of great videos on keeping up old outboards that have helped me a lot over the years, you should check him out for sure

Dumb question I just got one of these and it’s a little more rough mine also has a diffrent looking Intake thingy do these run regular gas or mixed?
@RustRehab
@RustRehab 4 жыл бұрын
They run mixed gas, I can't remember the exact ratio for this one and I'm not home this week to check, but I'm sure it's online. I always run a little on the richer side, just incase. I have a Johnson Seahorse from between 1924-1944 that runs 8:1, but I think the one like you and I have is 40 or 50 to one. Check to make sure though.

Tcw3 Evinrude johnson 2 stroke semi synthetic oil. 32 ounces of oil for 6 gallons of gas, 16 ounces of oil for 3 gallons of gas. 8 ounces of oil for 1.5 gallons of gas. To get an engine like yours running would recommend complete tuneup. Spark plugs, points condensers, coils, carb kit, lower unit impeller

Thanks! The watch was an important gift, it spent a winter outside before filing and it never worked again. That was filmed about 2 years ago, I did replace it after that.. But only because I lost it again ;)

My outboard will start idle and accelerate if you pull on the carb. But if you use the twist throttle it dies
@RustRehab
@RustRehab 4 жыл бұрын
It's probably a timing thing. When you twist the handle on the outboard it both opens the carb AND changes the timing. So if you had a timing issue that would explain why opening the carb on its own is fine, but using the handle causes it to die.

Great video! Did you ever get a three prong fuel connector for the motor? I’ve got the same outboard and can’t find one. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! And no, I never did find another line. I sold my boat, and only recently started toying around with old outboards again. I did a bit of looking around though, and it looks like you can convert the old double gas line to a single gas line by adding a remote fuel pump. I found them on amazon for about $40, the old Johnson ones should work fine from the 90's. Basically, you'll notice that one of you lines goes to a carb (of course) and the other goes to your crank case. Old Johnsons use to use that second line to pressurize your entire gas tank, and that's how the gas got to the motor. You need a special gas tank for that to work. It's cheaper to just buy a remote fuel pump, hook that crank case line up to that remote fuel pump, and then run a regular fitting with a single line through that. This link is the sort of remote pump I'm referring to, I think it should work: www.amazon.ca/dp/B07PM4B6X3/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_AWPVRB2JRYA4H12TGSHN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
