In this video, I introduce the topic of carbohydrates / sugars.
(CH2O)n is the general formula for a monosaccharide or simple sugar. Glucose (C6H12O6) is a very common and very important example.
Carbohydrate names end in “-ose”
Aldoses have aldehydes in their straight-chain forms (depicted as Fischer projections)
Ketones have ketones in their straight-chain forms (depicted as Fischer projections)
There are D sugars and L sugars, and the convention is based on the Fischer projections of D-glyceraldehyde and L-glyceraldehyde. The two are enantiomers because they are opposite in absolute configuration at all of their chiral centers (which, in this case, is only one). D-glyceraldehyde has an OH on the right, while L-glyceraldehyde has an OH on the left. Sugars that have their last OH on the right are D sugars; sugars that have their last OH are L sugars. Most sugars that exist in life forms are D sugars.
In the video, I depict the difference between Fischer projections (straight chain sugars) and Haworth projections (sugars in their ring forms). I also briefly mention the idea of anomers as a class of epimers, which are a specific class of diastereomers.
Diastereomers are stereoisomers that differ in at least one, but not all chiral centers.
Epimers are stereoisomers that differ at only one chiral center (they are a subclass of diastereomers).
Anomers are stereoisomers that differ at only one chiral center when that chiral center is specifically the anomeric carbon, the stereocenter that forms when a sugar forms a ring. Anomers are a subclass of epimers.

Dude...you are simply the best biochemistry teacher I have ever seen. You need to write books dude. I'll be more than happy paying for them. With your amazing teaching i am finding med school (especially biochem) pleasantly appealing!!!! I wish I had Anatomy & Physiology Moof University - I am allowed to dream right? Are you a medical doctor by any chance?

+Mohamed Moalin Lol. Thanks, dude! I'm glad you're enjoying med school and especially the biochem portion. A physiology Moof University has gotta happen at some point, but it probably won't be ready in time for you to use it in med school. I am not a medical doctor, though I one day hope to be after Moof University is where I want it to be. You serious about the books thing? What kind of books should I make? Textbooks? Or something similar to SparkNotes or the "___________ for Dummies"?

Moof University especial addition book with fully differentiated activity ideas (photocopiable worksheet in book or differentiated worksheets to print from accompanying CD-ROM) and assessment opportunities to test once own knowledge. The other option is to provide completed tutorials that are precise and easy to follow in a CD Rom which is absolutely packed with photocopiable materials - this is the easiest and cheapest option (I think). This means you will be able to cover many more topics untill hopefully, you've covered biochemistry.

Mohamed Moalin before enrolling in medicine school learn how to speak to people you do not know. "Dude"? Really? You sound uneducated and rude.

Thank you so much man, This helped me bunches. I am studying nursing, but need this as a pre-requisite. You explained (relatively thoroughly) what my professor has struggled for a week to explain to us. Much love.

Really appreciate how you made this so straightforward and therefore interesting. I really needed to know these details for my nutrition exam on carbs but felt like I was banging my head against a wall throughout so many lectures and tutorials and books and videos as I just kept getting SO stuck! You've unstuck me! Please keep posting. Great job!
