In this video, I introduce the topic of enzymes by discussing what they are, what they do, and how they do what they do.
Enzymes are biological catalysts, and they speed up chemical reactions without altering the thermodynamics of said reactions. They do this, specifically, by lowering the activation energy of a reaction, and they lower the activation energy of a reaction by stabilizing the transition state, the high-energy intermediate of a reaction that exists between reactants and products. Enzymes bind their substrates at a site called the active site, which is very specific as to what it binds to.

Good video. Although I must add that enzymes don't lower the activation energy of a reaction. They provide an alternate reaction pathway of lower activation energy.

You could also involve substrate distortion since this is a second effect of enzymes that lowers the activation energy by elevating the free energy of the reactants.

The only thing I'm still looking for clarification on is 3:24 - 4:17; more specifically, How enzymes increase rate constants and whether this has anything to do with their ability to lower activation energy.

Fantastic video except I really wish instructors would stop saying "you probably already know this" because it makes students like me in class and who come to these videos feel either like we missed something or that we are behind everyone else which is just a terrible feeling.

Malixie I COMPLETELY understand your sentiment, but it's hard not to say that sort of thing in an advanced course like biochemistry. By the time a student is taking biochemistry, it is expected that they have taken and passed pre-requisite courses in general chemistry, basic biology, and organic chemistry, where they should have learned the fundamentals necessary in order to succeed in biochemistry. Knowing that students may not remember what they should, I try my best to refresh their memory by giving them a bit of information they should already know, in hopes that it will be at least somewhat helpful. In any case, I'm happy you thought the video was fantastic. I just felt the need to give you my two cents on the matter you presented. :]
