Carbon Fiber 240z Restoration | Part 2: Making Carbon Fiber Roof

Today we make the first carbon fiber part for the rusty 240z Datsun. Thanks to Fibreglast we have been given the opportunity to test their new 1169-C Stabilized 2x2 twill 3k carbon to make this roof. Upon completing the roof we finish it off with a nice polish to give it that perfect sparkle. To do this we also test out PAIBOAT composites 3-step waxing products. These are unique because their wax is black compared to your traditional waxes, which are white. Make sure to watch and figure out this is unique and how it can help you with your carbon fiber parts! roof looks awesome! Quick tip, if you use two strips of thick doubled sided foam tape on your body stands and then stick the roof down you can keep it from moving around while you are buffing. Great job guys, keep it up

I am restoring a 78 280z and it has a sunroof that I want gone yall should think about selling these as there people who would buy them (me specifically). Great to see you back!! That stabilized carbon looks great, but for the cost you could probably just pre-cut pieces, mist the backs of them with some Super 77 and let it dry before layup to achieve more or less the same result.

As a novice, I’d like to know why you don’t add some core between the layers? Maybe not for strength, but stuff like heat transfer and a panel that thin seems like it could vibrate and be a bit noisy, which a thin core might stiffen up and help with?

I mix epoxy resin’s for a living, and I’m surprised that you don’t scrape the sides of your container with your stir stick unless you didn’t show it in the video. Also, I don’t understand why you don’t use pre-marked containers for measuring.

Please don’t misunderstand that I’m not criticizing your video but “carbon fiber roof”reminds me something must be baked in the Autoclave. The merit of carbon fiber roof is light weight but resilience and safety against the crashes. I wonder how such physical properties can be achieved on your work. I can’t pick up those information from the video.

If you are mixing using those sticks, you probably are not quite perfect in you're 3 to 1 mix. Because the circumference is different from the bottom to the top of the cup.

What is this clear gel coat you speak of? As far as I know there isn’t an epoxy gel coat and polyester gel coat probably isn’t compatible with epoxy.

Do you do resin infusion? That method is faster then wet lay up and you dont use as much resin.

Panel bond. Its a high strength glue for body panels. Lots of OEM manufacturers use it in place of welds in non structural areas. Cuts down on warpage
