You Literally have to see it to believe this one. Words cannot explain how much of a disaster this datsun 260z is! I thought i had seen it all, but no, i was mistaken. So we decided to get on with stripping the passenger side pf this abandoned classic, only to find absoloute botch repairs to the car. Filler and fiberglass didnt quite cut it, we also had plastic in there too!
We then started cutting out the front repair patches, and then we found another, and another and another.
And another...
This is the definition of a Disaster. It is our Disaster Datsun 260z

I’ve seen filler over newspaper and chicken wire, expanding foam, aluminum tape, or like this just paddled into a gaping hole, I had a 67 TR4 rear clip and the fins were solid filler over little straps brazed to the fender and body every 4-6”.

I think it depends on the particular model and where it’s used. The old 6 series seem to suffer a lot more than the 5 series they were based on. My father had a first gen 7 series up to 2012 and that had not rust to speak of and was not a pampered car.

Reminds me of a Triumph Spitfire I did 20 years ago, old road signs riveted on with tons of filler. You’ll see unbelievable things done to cars trying to cut corners and save money. Also the1955 Oldsmobile that had cement mortar over a cage made of wire and screws as a base covered by filler. I guess filler was too expensive at the time. You’re going to have your hands full. Don’t get discouraged

I've really seen a lot in the 40 years I'm already active working on cars- but this is truly the icing of the cake... 😮 Honestly: try to cut the upper hull (a/b/c pillars + roof) off. Construct a complete tube frame chassis, attach bonnets, fenders, doors & quarter panels to it. How on earth will you be able to rebuild the complete f***ed up jigsaw of rust (front end)??? 🤐 I mean, if there would be spare panels available like for the Escort, but this... Original restoration yes/no, but in the end, there will be maybe 20% of original material left... But the video was great to watch- thanks for your bravery and still taking us with you guys on this journey!

The cream coloured infill on the C pillar looks very much like expanding foam as you get sprayed onto the outside of domestic hot water tanks. You cab buy in an aerosol with a thin tube on the nozzle and it basically fills cavities as the previous body shop has done so. Unfortunately many body shops apply a skim of filler over everything but I've never seen a car as bad as this. Hats off to you if you can bring this one back from the dead!

Ryan, you really have to track down this previous sculpture/owner. I have never seen such craftiness with body filler! It truly is a work of art. I can only imagine the amount of body filler used. It must have shown up on a skid/pallet. And as you know, most filler gets sanded off. It must have been a true site to see this being done in person! And that rear quarter side scoop, speachless, I'm just speachless. What will be behind that front fender leg/support? Disastrousnous at its ultimate level. Keep up the great work Ryan. Btw, i use a lot of Eastwood products over here in the States. That SCT tool is "THE TOOL" for doing that kind of stripping. Well done!

Wow Ryan. I am the first to admit that I am a (very) old, and not-so-enthusiastic nowadays amateur, but I have been around and tinkering with cars for over 50 years. I can honestly say I have never seen a worse car than that one. Just a point for a lot of the commenters. There are thousands of old cars on the road with high power engines, think American muscle cars, that were all built and designed well before crumple zones were even thought about. There is no-one who says "don't buy a fully restored '59 Mustang, it will be a death trap if it hits anything". Once Ryan and the boys have rebuilt that car it may not be constructed exactly as it came from the factory, but they go the extra mile as far as cutting corners and not re-instating layers like other so-called restorers do. I'm sure it will be a perfectly strong and safe car to do whatever Steve decides to do with it.

Oh my goodness! The Disaster Datsun is your “Ship of Theseus”. By the time it’s finished, every panel will have been replaced. It’s still the same Datsun, but can you make another out of the parts cut out?

Whenever I start feeling sorry for myself with my junky old 75 corvette, I just watch your Datsun episodes. Nothing else can be this bad. I mean, at least my corvette was supposed to be fiberglass all the way down…

I told my boss, no more buying other people’s projects. Virgin metal only, I can build him anything he wants but he no longer importing other people’s backyard boogie. I hope they make panels for that car. Good job saving it.

Ryan, you asked in a recent video to let you know what advertising popped up in yo9ur videos. Here in Australia, in this last video, we got: Bupa (health insurance), Hero wars (some stupid video game) and North Face (outdoor clothing). That's pretty good compared to some sites. BTW, love your work.

I really feel sorry for you guys , I’m a Datsun fan and owners of a 280zx and I was very excited to see a project like this but I think it should have been scrapped , nothing is worst than a butchered body to start with .

This one won't see the road again, will be a track car only. Z's are stupendously rare over in the UK too.

I owned a 74 260Z 2+2 back in 78. Loved the car but they had a couple of issues. Rear brakes are drums and they do not have adjustment slots. I had a rear brake lock up. A family friend was the service manager at Datsun and told me that it was a common thing to happen and that they just break the drum off and replace it. Drums were $75. I spent about an hour slowly tapping around the drum until I got it off. The second issue I had was the fact that they ran the coolant via hose to jackets around the carburetors. This may be an OK idea up north, but here in Florida, it caused the gas in the carbs to boil and also caused vapor lock. Bypassed the carbs and all was well.

They have, its in the inside you have to take a rubber out. And vapor lock ts bad fuel low octane fuel in combination with bad maintenance causing that. Ive run my 240z in 42c Summers no problem. Just use 100 octane fuel

Well, I had bought the car to make a run home to Florida and had only owned it for a month before the trip. The car was only 4 years old. There was no 100 octane fuel for cars. Once I removed the hoses to the carbs, no more problems. The car was great though. I let a fellow sergeant drive it some and he sold his 60 Corvette and bought one.@@hoedemakerbart

The backing plates for the brakes had no slots. Maybe they were supposed to, but none on this car. Our friend from Datsun remarked that this was normal. We cut the slots. I really loved driving the car though. I let a fellow sergeant drive it some and he ended up selling his 60 Vette and buying one himself. @@hoedemakerbart

No nic trzymam kciuki i kibicuję 😊. Musi się udać.

Lol I worked in the industry from the age of 18 to about 25 and have restored several cars over my 50 years, I found chicken wire, space invader even a loaf of bread used as support for the filler. Lol that looks like a really long build.

It is so sad to think that guys like you spend some much time restoring the vehicles to almost showroom condition but there are people out there who don't care about causing accidents and destroying all love and care you put into you work in restoring these classics.
