Hey guys, great to see you doing another series. I've been a qualified mechanic in Australia for 15 - 16 years now and am a qualified LPG installer/ LPG RWC Inspector (LPG cars in Aust require a separate RWC for their LPG system itself) and RWC (Road Worthy Certificate) Inspector amongst other things and thought I'd chime in on the fuel tank issue. Firstly, I would NEVER recommend anyone doing their own welding on their car's fuel tank at home in their garages- BUT FYI- it's all about purging the tank clean of flammable gasses obviously. One method old timers used to use was to completely fill the tank with water to push all the air out and then go about cleaning and drying the tank prior to commencing welding but these days we use an inert gas to purge the tank clean thoroughly, then clean for welding. THIS IS NOT A JOB FOR THE HOME MECHANIC, NO MATTER HOW EXPERIENCED. THIS IS A WORKSHOP ONLY REPAIR, IN MOST PLACES MANDATED BY LAW.

I think this was the perfect before and after test because most guys don't have a perfectly tuned carburetor. So a carburetor can do better but I think this was very representative of what you're going to find for the average street car with a carburetor . Excellent job 👍 Thank you

As someone who daily drives an 84 pickup that's carbureted I was seriously thinking about buying the Holly EFI kit, even had it in my shopping cart on Summit ready to buy, until I dug a little deeper. The pros are obviously mentioned everywhere: Tunes while you drive for maximum fuel economy and efficiency, better cold start up, no more having to deal with my manual choke, etc etc. But what they don't tell you is the cons. This is not an easy job that you can throw together. One thing they don't mention is you need to have a single plane intake manifold, or you need to cut and notch out your duel plane intake manifold, otherwise the Holly EFI will never run right. Duel planes are way more common, so you'd have to pull your intake manifold off and cut out and notch it and then put it back together. You can even see it in the HolyPerformance install video (even though they don't mention it). If you're half way into this project and didn't know that you'd be pretty pissed. And then there's the kicker, a properly tuned carb will run better and make MORE power than a Holly EFI kit. Holly even admits to this. So unless you're still in the build process or you have another vehicle to drive while you try to install this kit I would not recommend it. Go with a $150 wideband gauge and tune your existing carb. Hell I even added a $25 dollar flow through electric pump so when I let my truck sit for awhile I can prime the carb and it fires right up no problem
@TheMrDarius Жыл бұрын
I had a 1986 k-5 blazer with the stock 350. It had a bad accelerator pump and a dead cylinder but no matter how long it sat you could bump the key and it fired right up. You’d have to feather the gas when you moved from a stop to get it to not stall but the thing would just fire right up and it would never leave me stranded. I miss that thing.
@gsikonia8 жыл бұрын
As usual some of you are missing the point of this. It wasn't to make more power, that was just a bonus. It starts better, has better driving manners, and gets better economy. If that's not what your looking for don't buy it, hell it's your money. I liked the video even though I don't plan on ever owning a carb'd vehicle again.

Whatever power your making with a carb, you could be making more power with EFI, his power level has nothing to do with EFI and everything to do with his intake, heads, cam and compression. It made 500ft-lb of torque at the wheels though, and that's excellent for what it has.

I was sick of pulling fuel bowls off constantly to make adjustments to fine tune the balance of street driving to WOT and having to make compromises to achieve the performance and streetability I was looking for. That was what pushed me into making this conversion. Running these systems also allows you to upgrade to a single plane manifold, in fact they even recommend having a common plenum for a more accurate vacuum signal to the MAP sensor. The wiring is easy, I used only a couple wires for the optional items while the rest is self contained so definitely do not be intimidated by that. The part of the install that took the longest was just the figuring out the routing of the harness to best hide it and cleanly integrating it into the factory harness. I chose a completely different route for fueling than an in-tank pump since I do have a return line but my tank has no baffling and could still suck air in certain situations with a less-than-full fuel level. Still have yet to drive it but I have started it and my goodness it was easy and the smell of vaporized fuel was no longer filling the garage after running it. I can’t wait to get it out on the road.

Great article. As far as I last read (which is admittedly a number of years back) even the best EFI retrofit systems still made a few less HP than a properly tuned carbureted engine. I'm merely curious from a dollar for dollar standpoint how close the Chevelle could have come in terms of power and perhaps even mileage with more intensive tuning of the ignition and fuel systems to begin with. That being said, besides the other advantages listed on the video I can really see a great improvement on plug life, especially at idle, and ease of starting every so often in Winter months. Nicely done.

***** With a properly set up Carb the times would have been nearly identical. CFM is CFM
@GlassTopRX79 жыл бұрын
+Tory S The EFI will make more power, in most cases it wont be dramatically more though. The throttle body doesn't have the restriction and turbulence that carb jets induce at least with the current kits. Granted we are talking about a throttle body system, the it's not a huge leap really. Even if they were rated at the same CFM the throttle body would still hold an advantage because of the turbulence. MT just posted a more detailed dyno comparison using a LS motor and they had the carb jetted and couldn't match the EFI.

@jfv658 жыл бұрын
you can tune a carb all you want but in the end you can only put 1 static tune on a carbed motor whereas EFi learns and tunes the engine all the time while driving. Think about low vs. high ambient temps or low altitude vs. high altitude, clean vs. dirty airfilter. These variations will all be tuned out by the EFi. EFi also does it's own cold start enrichment, no choke needed. EFi is also able to cut off fuel when engine braking. It also controls idle speed dynamicaly (compensating for AC, alternator load, powwersteeringpump load.) once you go EFi you won''t look back.

Watching install videos like this are annoying when they don't explain themselves. At the end of the install 9:20 they have ''a table full of parts'', one of which is the ignition system. If this was a ''kit'', why didn't Holley include a new distributor? Well at 8:58, you see they used a GM TBI type distributor for the ''plug and play'' ability (another mandatory item needed for this kit to work). Sure, this vid is 5+ years old but I'm just now getting back around to the idea of installing one of these. The bugs have had a while to be worked out by Holley so I'm looking forward to buying one.

Doesn't play music, starts car, music starts... Why do you All do that? I'd rather head the car than you talking, I'd rather hear the engine and read subtitles than listen to you or your music.

Ha, ha... that is so funny. I was thinking the same. Saw another vid the other day- a hot rod Nova. You could barely hear the engine. Wahhas tha point, bro. Everybody's a video editor, now.

hey Rob, how about you make videos where its just engine noise and subtitles. Then you can watch your own videos that you actually put any work into, instead of bitching at someone else for their creative differences. Y O U W I L L F I N D A R E A S O N T O B I T C H A B O U T A N Y T H I N G

@@blaynetaliaferro8387 I should digress also...maybe it’s wrong for me to say non-impressive numbers for the ‘66 bow tie, I’m old. I grew up in that era. But my little Honda family cruiser puts down numbers similar to some of the old Mopars I’ve owned...at least while they were stock.

I love the old farts who say "What a waste. 20 minutes time and I could get that carb running better than the EFI garbage." They then get off of the computer, go into the garage, and hop into their 2014 Buick with their wife enjoying easy starts, good MPG, cruise control, A/C, and heated seats on their way to Denny's. All while leaving their carbed muscle car in the garage despite it being a lovely day. LOL.

Younger fart here. I have to agree with your old fart sentiment that 20 minutes is about all it takes to get the carb tuned up right. However, I have been driving my Nova for 15 years rain or shine as my daily driver, so I jump into it wherever I go!

I'm old enough to remember when 95% of cars on the road in the US had carbs and old points type distributors. My first car in the 80's was carb and points type distributor ignition and I had to adjust all that on a regular basis to keep my MPG at 15 on the highway. I've had several fuel injected vehicles since and they start right up and I get way better mileage while still having plenty of power. Never ever fooling with carbs again unless I have the money to keep a "Saturday driver" around that isn't my daily driver.

It is a performance upgrade because efficiency is performance.

This gets the job done. It's no contest with a modern engine and trans from say an SS or LT Camaro swap. The V6 will do 320 hp and 20+ mpg and the 6.2 will do 420 hp and 17+ mpg. That's with fudging the mpg numbers down. An 05ish truck 5.3 is nice as well. 290ish hp 18 mpg and a wrecked truck can be bought for under a grand. Less performance. Budget option.

this ‘66 Chevelle is my Favorite 60s car! Yes, I know I’m a weirdo & prefer this type over the ‘69 and I prefer the “Malibu” lettering iver the “Super Sport” lettering on the quarter panels. I also prefer Roger Moore J Bond movies over S Connery’s films. I know. I’m a weirdo, but Damnit!, I love the ‘66 Malibu.

Well? I was excited about this conversion but was quickly disapointed with the video "How To Part" After you lay all the parts on the table, I was expecting to see a Step by Step instructional video. Why you went into fast forward is beyond me, I really prefer the longer explaination of "How To" where you show Step by Step what you did. Is there any chance you could re-post the longer version showing the "Step by Step" process of "How To " Convert and install?

Awesome- I just bought a 66 chevelle with a 396 and this was something I was curious about. What did the system cost, and did you lose any of that old school muscle rumble or did the sound retain?

I want the same car, got the fever yesterday at a car show in Cumberland, RI in a grocery store parking lot. If that doesn't take the cake, how demeaning older guys with their very nice 396 Chevelles' at a food store lot, LOL! I have a garage for a future car I can not afford right now. Thing is I'm no mechanic by any stretch, don't know if I'm even capable of handling such an endeavor. I would need a PRO to install that electronic fuel injection system either way. But I can dream can't I? There are plenty of these cars out and about for sale I am finding. I get the sense owning one would become a nonstop hobby or fix it job. Any thoughts?
@davidhuffman20758 жыл бұрын
+dontswin it all depends on what is already done to the car, mine is bone stock except for the motor (it was originally a 327), so I'm going to be spending thousands of dollars and several hours installing disc brakes, modern suspension components, bucket seats and the efi system. I do have a father and a family friend that are very savvy with old Chevys so it won't be as much of a chore for me- but you can easily find one that doesn't need as much to be "modern", or just drive it stock! They're reliable enough, but some mechanical know how will have to be learned at some point in case something happens

+dontswin it's a blast though, I absolutely love it. My friend just finished restoring his 68 charger, a 10 year project! We're both 27 and can cruise the streets in style- you don't see many guys our age with these cars :)
@dontswin8 жыл бұрын
Your right about your age group not having these sweet cars. As a matter of fact, young people are actually holding off buying cars these days. I also suppose it's a regional socio-economic thing too. The auto makers are having conniption fits about the lack of interest by the young people towards new autos. That's what the numbers tell. Myself, if you add 20 to your age that's me, lol. So when I was almost 8 these were BRAND NEW! I suppose I never stopped loving this particular car since my cousin had one way back then. He'd take me out a lot in it. It was all black, all stock(w/ a few mods) I'll never forget the sound. Sounded like a jet engine! I figure if I don't get one soon, I'll probably die without ever having fulfilled this one dream. So I really don't know. I do have a garage to keep it dry in for starters. But I am far from being a mechanic.

I bought a 396/360 in 1966. The 396/375 came out in late 1966. The guys that bought the 360 were out in the cold. If you have a 325hp you do not have the four bolt mains. If you have a 396/360 you have the high performance engine. IF you have the 396/375 you can tell it buy the intake manifold. It will look SILVER because it is ALUMINUM. NOW get a set of AIR BAGS for the REAR. The stock carboarator for a 396/360 does not put enought gas in the engine. YOU NEED a 780cc. If you have a 396/325 hp, that is not a high performance block. The 360 says hp on the BLOCK in the back. To make that car run you need a 4.10 rear. The rear will make the car go fast but it will cost you a lot in gas. My 396/360 came with a 331 rear. My best friend bought a 396/375 chevelle with a 4.10 rear and could not afford the gas. WE swapped rears and this made my car fast. There is a 396/375hp chevelle out they some where with my old rear in it.
