In regards to the "production" on Reek Of Putrefaction, THAT is one of the reasons I fell in love with the band in the first place. I used to have a tape (remember those?) back in 1990 that my buddy did me, which had Reek on one side, and Symphonies on the other - and I absolutely listened it to death. I LOVED (still do) the rawness of the 1st 2 albums. For me it's the 1st 3 albums which are my favourites (although I love everything Carcass have done - including the EPs), but they are, for me, up there with someone like Ihsahn with a near flawless discography. I've even come around on Swansong as I've matured. Hopedfully they still have another couple of albums left in them.

If you go into reek with the mindset of it being a death metal album you’re gonna be disappointed. As a guy who LOVES noise music it definitely appeals to me. It’s equal parts awesome groovy punky-death metal stuff with some awesome noise elements (albeit, the noise stuff was unintentional).

Great review of Torn Arteries and ranking here. I didn't know what heavy was until I heard Carcass, and it was Heartwork that I heard first. Although a compilation I have to whack "Wake Up And Smell" in their too as it has some kick arse tracks and was very controversial here in Australia at the time of release for it's cover being "paper bagged" to hide the cover on release. Some of the albums are interchangeable but one things remains consistent; Carcass' best album unquestionably in my opinion is Necroticism Descanting the Insalubrious. It never shared first place with any of their other works and that includes Heartwork.

I'm a baby death metal fan and I think Reek of Purification is absolutely gloriously unhinged. The reason why I got into death metal in the first place is because of how overtly ridiculous a genre it can be. Reek knocked me on my ass the first time I heard it, like I was feeling my perception of what "heavy" was being changed in real time.

Love all their albums pretty much equally. Some of the most extreme sound changes in what continued to be a metal band. Some metal bands will go on to do my modern rock stuff (In Flames etc), but not Carcass. Carcass influenced hundreds of grindcore bands, death metal bands, goregrind bands and melodic death metal bands. I don't get the hate for Swansong. Don't understand it at all. It's a great metal album and they would have been chewed out for going back and making Symphonies again anyway. The hooks are amazing

Great list! I love you're rankings, but I'd say at this point, Surgical Steel is already an S tier album to me. It's just so great, every song, such good riffs, everything about it is near perfect. Also, This Mortal Coil! I'm surprised you didn't mention that song from Heartwork, that's probably one of my favorite melodic death metal songs ever, and that riff at the start is absolutely iconic! I'm also totally with you that Swansong is an overhatted album, I love it, it's my favorite death 'n' roll album ever. So many catchy, great songs on it, very melodic in places too, and Black Star is an absolute classic. For me, it's an A tier album, behind Torn Arteries.

My personal list cuz why not? Reek of Putrefaction: D (an classic that aged REALLY bad. There is good songs though. Foeticide, Re*******tion of Giblets and Burn to a Crisp are quite great early splatter death metal songs. But the production, the rest of the songs and some other things are sadly very lame or just too extreme it's just bland, definitely not an good start tbh). Symphonies of sickness: A+ (but after an meh album, they literally blow us away. The songs on this album are way ahead of time, mainly songs like Exhume to Consume, with it's riffs and song complexity. Or Empathological Necroticism, which could be an modern death metal song and we would not notice it was from 1989. Or even Reek of Putrefaction with it's creepy piano and creepiness in general. Or or even Excoriating Abdominal Emanation and it's explosive sounds. Still, the only problem with this albums is it's audio quality which it's still quite lame and too much raw. Still, a great album). Necroticism: Descating the Insalubrious: S (no words, this album is death metal at it's finest hour. Songs like Corporal Jigsore Quandary, Impropagation, Incarnated Solvent Abuse, Carneous Cacoffiny and Forensic Clinicism are full time death metal masterpieces. And basically there is nothing wrong in this album, it is perfect!). Heartwork: S+ (probably the most extreme change of sound from one album to other that we didn't wanted, but rather we needed! All the songs in this album, with no exceptions, are just masterpieces. No words, definitely their best album!). Swansong: A (An very unique album because of it's death n'roll sound and song structure that resembles death and rock in the same world. Songs like Black Star, keep on Rotting in the Free World and Tomorrow belong to Nobody are really good classic death n'roll songs. The only problem is that the album is another big change in sound, but this time it is more uneven and less accepted than before. Still, an awesome album). Surgical Steel: A (after all these years, they've return with another great album for us! The mix between the soundings of Heartwork with some influences of their early work and modern metal really defines this album. There is a lot of great songs, and tbh, they all are great in their own, with main focus Bein Unfit for Human Consumption, which sounds very alike an song straight out of Necroticism. In general, it is a very solid album, and totally worthing of checking out). Torn Arteries: S (no way they can release an album that manages to be on same place with their prime albums, but they did, and I love it! Again, all songs are worth checking out, Soo much in fact that I can't recommend 1 or 3 of the album, hear them all! In general, Torn Arteries is basically Carcass at it's finest hour in modern times now, and I just adore it A TON!). In general, Carcass is an perfect band, with not a single bad album, not even Reek of Putrefaction is bad, it's just ok still, which is something that not every band can do!
