In this case ranking the albums is kinda pointless, they’re all great. Works of art within the genre. There is no best although I prefer the technical period, a really great run of albums there. Individual thought patterns is a unique and perfect record. Symbolic is amazing too and on a particular day it may be my favorite. I like how it was nearly a constant revolving lineup and the different contributions the members brought. It’s been said that the spiritual healing live era was their heaviest so that’s interesting to note as well.

Symbolic is the peak of Death's discography, the sum of the whole band's evolution through time. After that, to avoid repeating himself, Chuck began to experiment with different sounds in TSOP. It was like "we reach the higher we can get playing death metal. Let's see what other stuff we can do". Symbolic is unbeatable.

I love how Death is a band where you can have your favorite album and it makes sense no matter which one it is because they’re all different and have their own unique identity. When I first started out with death I loved human and Leprosy, and now I’m much more into individual thought patterns and spiritual healing

I'm also new to Death. I gave all of their albums some spins after watching this and some other videos. Our rankings are very different, though. But you got some interesting picks. Seeing where you and Questy put their debut, I was saving that for later, but it's honestly at last or thereabout for me. The songs and song writing are a bit boring to me, though I see some quality in it. It's still a good album, as are all of Death's albums. I much prefer their later stuff. I think they progressively got better (no pun intended). But then again, I prefer progressive death to classic / thrash death. Here's my ranking: S Symbolic and The Sound of Perseverance A Individual Thought Patterns and Human B Leprosy and Spiritual Healing C Scream Bloody Gore Occasionally, the S and A albums switch places. More listens will decide that.

I didn’t have friends who were into Death growing up so I’m pretty new to them. I heard Human first (I was going through a Cynic phase) and as good as it is, I actually like the 3 albums after it more - I’m just listening to the first three now. They have some amazing songs at an overall high quality throughout their career. Really hard band to rank. For me it boils down to the sound of the recording and the rest of the musicians because the song writing itself is consistently very good. Excited to see Death to All in Portland this March!

Not enough love for individual thought patterns. With u all the way man. Human is great but I.T.P is all the way fleshed out. And somehow it seems to go unnoticed. The early cuts are super raw and the last 2 albums are in a place of their own i feel. The middle 3 are the perfect balance and I.T.P did it the best. Surprised to see spiritual healing so low. I have my gripes with the drums, but I was never bored. Love from australia. 🤘🤘🤘

My List: S: Human (this one is my favorite because to me, this is the best blend of their early and later styles, still having elements of the classic era while still pushing musical boundaries), Scream Bloody Gore (by far the best debut album I’ve ever heard), and Symbolic (can’t beat the production on this one) A: The Sound of Perseverance (this one is pretty good, but not as good as the ones above it) B: Leprosy (this would be in A if not for the reverbed vocals) and Individual Thought Patterns (this would be in A if it didn’t have fretless bass) C: Spiritual Healing (between the reverbed vocals and the fact that this one never clicked with me as much as the others did, I can’t rank it higher; it’s still a good album, though)

Gonna copy my own comment from an old CoverKillerNation Death ranking video :P ((S TIER)) 1 Symbolic (best album I've ever heard, and still my favourite of all time. Lyrics, Drums, Riffs, Melodies, Solos.. The only flawless 10/10 I know of). -From the iconic opening riff on Symbolic to Without Judgement's middle section and Perennial's beautiful outro, I love every second. 2 Human (The most intense album with great mix of riffs and melodies. 9.9/10). -every track could be a highlight.. but See Through Dreams, Vacant Planets and Secret Face are seriously underrated (and my favourites)!!! 3 TSOP (A little long, but it has THE best melodies.. and the Painkiller cover is one of the few I accept as part of the original CD. 9.7/10). -From the complex Scavenger of Human Sorrow to the beautiful, emotional Story to Tell, every song could be a highlight.. ((A TIER)) 4 Leprosy (Perfect lenght and it has the hardest riffs, vocals and Rick's frantic whammy solos fit. The best pure Death Metal record. 9.3/10) -Pull the Plug, Open Casket, Leprosy, Born Dead and Left To Die are my favourites. 5 Individual T. Patterns (The most technical album with the best bass performance, but it has three "o.k."/ slightly sub-par songs imo.. 9.2/10). -Trapped In A Corner, Jealousy, Overactive Imagination, Philosopher and Mentally Blind are my favourites. ((B TIER)) 6 Spiritual Healing (The worst production imo, the drums are so flat.. The riffs, shredding and UNDERRATED melodies rule, though. 9.0/10). -Within the Mind, Genetic Reconstruction, Defensive Personalities, Title Track and Altering the Future are my favourites. 7 Scream Bloody Gore (The 2nd "worst" production, but it's still a punch to the throat! Awesome piece of history, but is mostly riff-riff-riff. 8.9/10). -Evil Dead, Sacrificial, Zombie Ritual, Baptized In Blood and Torn To Pieces are my favourites.

I love human, s tier for me., but I completely get in what you mean by being the least human. The songs have a personality to me, but it always gave the vibe to me of observing human existence from an outside perspective, less so than from a human's standpoint. I do love that though. I liked seeing Individual Thought Patterns getting love. I really like this album for the reasons you give and I think that's the best rhythm section death had. Unlike Symbolic where it just has too many slow parts and the vocals are a bit hit and miss, ITP for me is perfection. The vocals, the guitars, the technical riffs, the solos, the speed, its just perfect.

Scream Bloody Gore never seemed to be the crowd's favourite for some reason but technically it's one of the finest early death metal albums. I personally dig it more than Covenant for example.

Death was my real introduction into death metal, Human was my first taste, I'll always remember that riff in Flattening of Emotions! I guess you were unlucky to come later on this wagon; I understand those seats can be rough and derivative nowadays - lol - they certainly weren't back then, I think they're as great and they will always be. Chuck was a mastermind; I miss his riffs. Scream, Leprosy and Human are probably his best in terms of vocals. I can say I overlooked Spiritual until recently, I love it now. I agree, Individual is an awesome one, the only problem is with the mix. Symbolic is their most accessible album, perfect gateway to people who want to get into heavy music. Leprosy is probably their best in terms of pure classic death metal, along with Scream, these shook the Earth at the time and changed the game, well, the underground. There is a doc about them, also an awesome tribute band on YT (with former members of Death included) if you want to check that out. You're not over the moon with this band I can tell, I respect that lack of enthusiasm, but Death is in the veins of every band prior, as you must know. You know a hell lot more of metal music than I do, of that I'm sure. Ok. I agree with you on symbolic. It’s my least favorite. I would’ve just stuck it in D. Sound of perseverance and Human are probably my two S tiers. I actually have not listened to individual thought patterns, so I’m gonna have to give that a listen.

A rare, mercurial metal genius. Chuck is up there with the giants. A forward looking, transcendent artist. A shame about his struggles. if he stuck around I’m confident the world would of finally caught up and rewarded him with the fortunes he deserved.

Title track on Human? Ironically one of albums that doesnt have a title track. Either way great ranking, kinda shocked Symbolic is so low but to each their own. I have to admit, you definitely inspired me to give SBG another solid listen and Ive certainly gained a new found respect for that record, cheers.

This was really interesting. Your perspective as a well versed metalhead that happens to have not heard these albums is really unique. (Also, Jesus, I'm old.) Your take on Human is the star here. I think it is defensible that Human brings less to the new listener who has already heard a ton of tech death. I was introduced to Death (the band) and death (the music) through Individual Thought Patterns. It immediately changed my life. So it was nice to see someone put it up S tier. Here is my list. It reflects the way I like tech, but dislike progressive. 1) Human 2) Scream Bloody Gore 3) Individual Though Patterns 4) Leprosy 5) Spiritual Healing 6) Symbolic 7) The Sound of Perseverance * Standard Disclaimer: I would rate every Death album at least 4 out of 5 stars.

Human is one of my favorite albums by Death but I do see why it could be a B tier for some people but it’s my favorite album art by them and one of my favorite songs by them is actually See through Dreams off of human

I cant put rankings on these albums so ill just say my 3 favorite in no order Spiritual Healing, Symbolic, Human. Close behind is ITP and SoP. Leprosy is great and Scream Bloody Gore is probably my least favorite but its not bad by any means.
