Probably a wise choice taking the southern route. Avoids possible winter type issues in an unknown vehicle, & at this time of year, the desert isn't likely to overtax the cooling system. Glad you & the car are finding a tolerable medium, it makes a difference in the quality of the trip! Good luck, be safe!

A great day Randy. Love that Tower Building. Good that you had a smooth ride today. Cheers

The fuel gauge issue: I own a 220 S Ponton, which had the same issue. In the sender unit is a small coil made from very thin wire. A contact slides over the coil to give the gas level reading. If the car is parked for a long time, the contact corrodes and rips off the wire of the coil. This then gives you this erratic reading. I had to buy a new reproduction to fix it, but is a very easy repair job as the sending unit is easy accessible through the trunk floor.

That old Mercedes is treating you right👍. My wife and I made a similar trip back in 1983 and stopped at all the old landmarks on Route 66. Thanks for the nostalgic trip today.

I’ve taken the 40, not enjoyable, until you see the mileage sign for Barstow, and you know you’re almost home. Love the Aguanga shirt, right up there with NY!

lol... I was born in Canada in 66 ... have seen a lot of great cars too 😁 we are young enough to appreciate the teens , 20s & 30s and up .... lost on later generations

I'll be turning 72 on New Year's Eve so I can appreciate your point of view. I would argue however, that there exists a healthy population of younger women and men who are passionately into "vintage" cars that were just cars when we were kids. Same reason so many younger people dig your era's music, and, even more so, mine. Stay warm Cannuck!

@@johna1160 I think the main thing is that while younger people are also into classic cars they did not have the luck to experience the times when classic Beauties filled the road and live in a time with less regulations: No seat belts, hardly speed limits and such. My daughter is 33 years old and drives my classics daily during summer.

Since you are posting this series, I presume that you made it home alive. I hope that the old Mercedes did too. I will stay tuned in to find out.

I'd call this old Boy "Otto"..... As in, " Come on Otto, Work with me, Get me home in one piece Otto"...
