The Nissan Withdraws From Honda Merger - its OVER! Nissan has decided to withdraw from its memorandum of understanding with Honda on pursuing a merger under a holding company, according to Japan’s Nikkei (NI-KI) business daily. Nissan will call off merger talks with rival Honda, the Nikkei newspaper said, abandoning a tie-up that would have created the world's No.3 automaker and raising questions about how it will drive a turnaround by itself. I'll tell you what this all means.

Honda was just complying with the Japanese governments request to intervene with Nissan's downfall. Honda had no intent on throwing away Billions of dollar's to bailout a crashing competitor. Honda was forced to help Isuzu in the 90's with the Passport failure. Lived and learned = never do it again.

Nissan can start by making a good affordable performance halo car again, the Z car. Take a good driver's car, the 370Z, and just modernize and refine the car as a purpose-built performance driver's car that's affordable. As far as the rest of its lineup, go back to the Infinity design concept with a focus on quality, reliability and style.

@@TheBandit7613 Most people have next to no interest in their car being "exciting". They want a particular set of characteristics suited to their needs, real and perceived; and this varies by demographic. Racing and Sport cars are a line that Nissan terminated under Renault. The problem with Nissan CVT's is that Nissan USA refuses to get real about the maintenance schedule that Nissan Japan calls out in Japan. If you treat a CVT as if it requires zero service for it's life; then you will be replacing it several times before the engine wears out. Clearly, this is a Management problem. Nissan USA is managed by idiots who think that they can drive down the "total cost of ownership" of their vehicles by monkeying with the service and maintenance schedules. They can, but only on paper! This is what happens when a car company is run by Marketing people who have no automotive or engineering background. Nissan Japan is fine. Nissan USA is fubar.

GOOD! That would be death for Nissan. Nissan has to get back to the Ghosn glory days, regardless of their bitterness and all the BS against him. He brought the best vehicles to Nissan and business was great. Now they have to find their way back. Honda has had their heads up their own butts for a long time too and are way to over stretched making anything from boats to generators, to planes and everything else. The cars look wonky. Ok the engines will last but so what? Prices are getting to be a joke as well, for what you get. Yeah, the cult of Honda will be angry if you look at things honestly, but, it's about time to call it like it is for ALL these manufacturers, resting on old laurels and producing wonky sht.

Nissan makes real pickup trucks Honda doesn't, If it was an equal merger Honda would benefit using their trucks and Nissan could benefit in reliablility, Honda is using Crapy CVT transmissions also to improve fuel economy.

We didn't want a Frontier pickup truck. We wanted a Ridgeline that drives better on road.

Tried to buy a super basic nissan a few years back. New but had cash ready to go. A sentra i believe. The dealership didnt have what I wanted. They instantly started trying to upsell me into other things, including their new Nissan Z. It was nuts! I wanted a super cheap economy manual transmission. And they try to put me in a Z. Nissan is so weird

Honda does NOT wanna take on the potential billions of dollars of losses that Nissan represents... and their transmissions are CRAP!... smart move on Honda's behalf. I don't see ANYONE tossing a rope to Nissan's sinking ship... :P

Can Nissan even afford to be choosy at this point? Based on what I've heard, Nissan may have as little as a year left to survive. Simply put, Nissan needs a corporate savior right now, and Honda seems the nearest thing to that. Nissan has apparently found a new corporate partner, but it's a hitherto unknown tech startup that may not be in any better shape than NIssan itself is. Others here have mentioned Nissan's quality woes, headlined by the misbegotten CVT (continuously variable transmission). But at the same time, Nissan's lineup as a whole is out of date. I hear the redesigned Murano is making headlines, but it uses the 2-liter variable compression turbo-four that seems every bit as iffy as the CVT. Clearly, the Murano alone will not save Nissan. It needs a viable partner fast. Otherwise, the Nissan, NISMO, and Infiniti brands will be consigned to the dustbin of automotive history,.

Hoping for the best with Nissan. My '23 Titan Pro 4X is better than my '18 FX4 and as good as my '13 FX4. Great truck so far. No ASS, no cylinder deactivation, no active fuel management.
