On a recent visit to Cardiff State Beach in Cardiff by the Sea (Encinitas, Ca) in mid-July, the beach was active with several species of shorebirds and one wader.
Seems sand crabs were on the menu! Whimbrels, Snowy egrets, Long-billed Curlews, Willets and Heermann’s Gulls were all running along the shore trying to catch sand crabs as the tide ebbed. Also, flocks of California Brown Pelicans were flying north, some probably moving from their breeding grounds along the offshore islands of the Pacific Coast of Baja California. Near the kelp that washed ashore, there was a small Striped Shore Crab.
