I love an ump that has the gumption to say, "Yeah, I dont know on this one." Ego is the death of the umpire and the fact they were willing to check the rule book when asked rather than just make a knee-jerk judgement is awesome. Good job blue!
@howardbaxter2514
@howardbaxter2514 3 жыл бұрын
It’s a good call. Your not going to know every minute detail of the rule book, so sometimes you come across instances where you simply don’t know what to call. Wish more umpires understood this. It’s okay to not know, as long as you not knowing isn’t about a major aspect of the game (like how to call a strike or what a general out is).

The past precident, as this has happened before in the 1930s , 40s and 50s, is that if the opposing team or officials notice a chipped or broken bat, they must object BEFORE the at-bat, not after. If they admit that they saw it before he came up, they can’t challenge after. This is not a rule but the precident set in earlier games that were appealed. This is what the MLB officials ruled in the prior instances. The precident is clear, they should make it a rule. This would resolve the confusion as it is becoming an issue again, apparently.

This was the umps being conservative and not making up any new shit. From what i understand there is precedent to this rule though in that it has to be done before the At bat. Considering how long this one went with a few foul tips and a ball to only say something after a Grand slam is anything but good sportsmanship. It 's trying to weasel the rules in your favor. The other day my son watched his first baseball game with interest. He was very curious about the field and asked if the grass grows like that, I told him that they cut the shape out, they’ll take out a machine and chalk the baselines. And he saw the crew smoothing out the dirt and he asked about that; so I told him they do maintenance on the field during and outside of games. I told him they use manure to take care of the grass, he asked what manure was and I replied “HORSE SHIT!!” Memories 😊

all they really say regarding the bat is this copied and pasted from the rules so here you go 3.02 The Bat (a) The bat shall be a smooth, round stick not more than 2.61 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length. The bat shall be one piece of solid wood. (b) Cupped Bats. An indentation in the end of the bat up to 1¼ inches in depth is permitted and may be no wider than two inches and no less than one inch in diameter. The indentation must be curved with no foreign substance added. (c) The bat handle, for not more than 18 inches from its end, may be covered or treated with any material or substance to improve the grip. Any such material or substance that extends past the 18-inch limitation shall cause the bat to be removed from the game NOTE: If the umpire discovers that the bat does not conform to (c) above until a time during or after which the bat has been used in play, it shall not be grounds for declaring the batter out, or ejected from the game. Rule 3.02(c) Comment: If pine tar extends past the 18-inch limitation, then the umpire, on his own initiative or if alerted by the opposing team, shall order the batter to use a different bat. The batter may use the bat later in the game only if the excess substance is removed. If no objections are raised prior to a bat’s use, then a violation of Rule 3.02(c) on that play does not nullify any action or play on the field and no protests of such play shall be allowed
