Was interested to see the second version because the cull and placement method is exactly what I also use, I really like letting the spectator put the finder cards (I use jokers and give them to the spectator at the start of the trick) in wherever they want and to do them singly so they know there's nothing in between. A couple of differences I have that I humbly offer up in case they are useful. I don't use a selected card. I get the spectator to think of and name any card. I use a stack so I just do an estimation cut a few cards above where their named card would be, then peeking the bottom card I know the difference in stack number of that card and the named card so I know how far down the card is that I have to cull (I like to keep it between 4 and 10). (that's why I use jokers as finder cards so that the stack isn't confused by having to adjust to allow for finder cards not being in their stack positions). When the spectator puts the two finder cards in at the place of their choosing and I've culled their named card into position I square the deck with the jokers still poking out like yours but not squared together, it's a great visual and really looks like they have nothing between them. Then at fingertips I square the jokers in to the deck and immediately give the deck to the spectator to hold. then maybe a bit of a recap while we "wait for the jokers to find the card" emphasising that it was only named/thought of. Then get them to look through the deck and discover the jokers have a card between, the card they thought of.
