Karen smith The way it "should be"? And what way is that? I assure you life in the 50's, 40's, and 30's were not without trouble and definitely not as simple as these idealistic glimpses of the past these videos present. It doesn't make you an old soul, gripping to this faux nostalgia is a sign more so of unhappiness in your current state of living.

Back then, it was standard practice to wash the hair only once a week, so 100 strokes of brushing helped keep the hair cleaner between washings. Nowadays, 100 strokes a day might be excessive, but back then, usually it was not excessive, and actually useful.

The hair brushing thing rings a bell, my Mom had a book on etiquette where they advised just that. I think it's got something to do with brushing the dirty grease out if you only shampoo once a week. They mentioned that in a program about the Tudors, that's how the poor kept their hair clean-ish.
@rosethorn023210 жыл бұрын
Brushing (especially with a good brush like a boar bristle one) helps to distribute the oil at your roots down the length of your hair. That's why it makes your hair shinier, and it'll help your hair look clean for longer since all that oil isn't stuck at the roots looking overly greasy. That being said, people today wash their hair daily or every other day, which constantly strips the hair of oil and causes the scalp to produce way more oil to replace it, so we think we need to wash more frequently. Washing only once a week is long enough to not cause the scalp to overproduce oil, but short enough that (with the help of daily brushing) their hair wouldn't have turned into a complete mess by the time they washed it again.

Why were people so conscious of having clean hands and nails? Because dirty hands and nails spread bacteria and disease, and the fifties saw cases of polio. There were Public Service Announcements on TV and radio, reminding people to wash their hands properly with running warm water and soap, rubbing vigorously for a sufficient amount of time, with proper attention given to fingernails using nail brushes and soap. Clean hands make for a far healthier life. I grew up learning these things, and I shudder when I see others in the restroom who leave without washing, or who handle money and then handle food without washing first. Those are both ways of introducing bad bacteria into your body and to others as well. Good hygiene is a great deal more than showering and brushing teeth. They weren't "obsessed", as you suggest, but were wisely conscious of practicing good hygiene. It is an EXCELLENT Life practice to make a good habit, to wash after handling anything dirty. It keeps the things you touch clean too, like your books, toothbrush, comb, your faucets, the lightswitches, doors, cabinets, doorknobs, cabinet handles, etc. Clean hands means less housecleaning! You can always tell a person who doesn't wash their hands: the walls, doors and everything in their house has dirty handprints. Ewww. They live in a gross environment all because they don't wash their hands enough. Gross. Such a man will have a hard time getting a woman's attention that way!! She'll be running in the opposite direction from such a slob! He can be a he-man, yet he must have clean hands and nails to be hygienic and presentable. Ugh, she wouldn't want those filthy hands touching her or her things! Why should she?? Word to the wise: Wash well, and always after touching anything dirty. :)

Yo Nivanz Did you live then? In middle class America? Because my parents and all their peers did care about good oral care for their teeth, and their breath, and every adult I knew cared. I knew no one that didn't! They all cared, in my corner of the globe!
@FurbyGender8 жыл бұрын
+John Smith They believed that a lot of things would happen to you if your fingernails were dirty. They knew very little about hygiene. There was always the belief that if you had dirty fingernails, you were going to infect everything and that because you touched everything, your fingernails were much more important than your teeth. Also, it showed good qualities if you took good care of your nails, you see with everyone being obsessed with the hands, that's the first thing people would notice.

Mentholian Smoke I strongly disagree, because I was there, and knew this generation very well, how they reasoned and what they did. They knew a great deal about hygiene, and MUCH MORE than this current generation around us now, that rarely washes their hands, and very few that wash before leaving the restroom. I see a very mistaken (media taught) notion among the young today, that previous generations didn't know much. This is extremely inaccurate. Previous generations were MUCH more educated and knowledgeable about many more things, than this current generation even has a clue about. Education MEANT a very great deal, not merely by personal value, but the academic wealth that it taught. What students in the nineteenth century knew by eighth grade was WELL beyond what current college students are taught. We have been in a PROFOUNDLY dumbing-down hundred year period. Except for whole new areas like computer science, DNA discoveries, genetic modification, chemical engineering, the common man has LOST a GREAT DEAL of previously held knowledge. We have college graduates now for thirty years that are not NEARLY as well educated as the high school students of the 1940's. The media constantly undermines previous generations and teaches that they were uneducated and unknowledgeable in many common areas, but it's JUST NOT TRUE. I find it sadly interesting that young ones who weren't even there, pretend to be so authoritively knowledgeable on previous generations, and what they knew. You have misspoken. And yes, the hygiene of BOTH the hands and mouth matters, especially because people who don't wash their hands touch their eyes, noses, faces, and their mouths, even handling food they are eating without washing. Yes, it matters. It is not about obsession. It is about knowledge and intelligence. It is the ignorant and apathetic that don't wash their hands, and they will bear the health impact. History has taught the vital importance of timely handwashing; here are just three examples: 1. the War between the States, dealing with gangrene, 2. doctors taking care of the sick and dying at the beginning of the Twentieth century, then delivering babies without washing between, proved a high mortality rate due to microbial transfer to the mother and baby. 3. Not washing well before leaving the restroom transfers personal microbial activity, only one of which is E-coli, to towels and whatever else is prone. This should be freely acknowledged by the reader, or there is great ignorance. You had said in another thread that you would live in the Fifties if you could. Your words here don't suggest that.

I use Dr. Bronnor products, because I care too much for what workers get paid for making the products, support US products and companies, animal welfare and many more. Plus Dr Bronnor is the only thing that keeps my hair from going flat due to weighted over-produced oils. Also my body doesn't produce bo as it did when I was using the unnatural stuff. I hope one day Dr. Bronnor (his grandkids) invents a natural henna liquid dye made in the US. Majority of liquid hennas are made in India and would be nice for the US to have their own brand of the stuff.

The "100 strokes a day" thing is actually bad, right? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
@gissellept9 жыл бұрын
Well, I'll tell you what I have learned, I may be wrong myself but I'll do my best. 100 brushes a day can be bad in modern days. The reason for this is becuase, us girls have plastic brushes with plastic bristles. If you look at your hairbrush or comb you will notice that the bristles or teeth are made or plastic, the plastic strips your hair or oils and nutrients and they are more likely to tear out your hair. Girls back in the 50's used different brushes, theu used brushes with soft bristels. When they Brushed their hair the bristles distributed the oils evenly, so the 100 stokes wasn't bad in those days.
@Litcott9 жыл бұрын
+Lauren Turner It made more sense back when people didn't wash their hair as often (or ever). Brushing regularly with natural bristle brushes would help keep hair clean and distribute oils from the scalp down to the tips of the hair. The 100 strokes thing may still have been excessive, but they were trying to ensure adequate oil distribution. Nowadays people wash their hair much more regularly. Shampoo strips your natural oils, so you don't have anything to distribute, and conditioner replaces those oils. Synthetic brushes are also the norm nowadays, and they don't really do much for distributing oils. The average person today really only needs to brush until they don't have tangles anymore.
@cacatr44958 жыл бұрын
Litcott Quote: "Or ever" ? Civilized people washed their hair. It wasn't everyday, but they washed their hair. You'd have to be a hobo or go into long ago times to filthy cities or peasants to find people who didn't wash their hair. The young ones foolishly assume that everyone before 1960 was uncivilized. They are not taught properly, but their pride in this present era is top-heavy!
@Litcott8 жыл бұрын
+CA Catr Calm down grandpa. I WAS referencing people way back when I said "or ever". You accuse young people of being foolish yet you're clearly desperate to misconstrue what we say, lol.
@cacatr44958 жыл бұрын
Litcott Your emotional ridicule and condescension is prideful and foolish. Calm down?? Where does your haughty tail get off using your enormous ego-pride to talk down to someone disrespectfully? Desperate? Evidently you are, because you're being verbally inflammatory and abusive. Yes. I said Foolish, and you are. You are haughty and verbally abusive. BAD FORM. Immature. If you want to be interpreted differently, then be specific. But your verbal abuse does not substitute for clarity and specificity, and it is not responsible. But you don't care about clear, specific communication, do you? Or good character. Or peace with your fellow man. Your words demonstrate that you are looking for an excuse to be aggressive and hateful. That is a self-destructive trait. If in the future you want to clarify your words, you CAN do so WITHOUT being abusive.

@rosethorn023210 жыл бұрын
Today they're not easy to get rid of, because head lice have become much more resistant to medication over time. Back then it would have been easy because they were not nearly as resistant.
@alib11499 жыл бұрын
gbrdaisy They used to be. When I was younger we used to use small amounts of Sassafras oil to get rid of them. It worked brilliantly...until here in Australia it was removed from shelves because it was considered dangerous. Because things like bleach and other chemicals aren't dangerous at all. Grrr. If you can get it make sure you use small amounts because too much burns the skin but used correctly it worked brilliantly against nits and lice.
