If you are going to reuse the piston (which I probably would if the damage is as minimal as Adam makes it sound) I would remove the piston from the engine and polish out the damage and then clean piston, lube it back up and reinstall it. Additionally unless you have a lathe and proper polishing bow I would seriously consider sending the camshaft out to a machine shop to have scratches polished out. Not to rub salt in the wound I am a firm believer that before starting an engine that any internal work was done to I cannot stress enough the importance of removing the spark plugs and rotate the engine over by hand at least one time for every cylinder. Secondly if you hear a strange sound when starting a newly rebuilt engine and you hear a strange sound stop and determine the cause of the sound before cranking the engine again. All that said opinions are like a certain excretory body orifice and everybody has one. Have a nice day and a better tomorrow.

Rocker arm stoppers are also no good because instead of throwing the shims when they should, they keep them in-place and direct that damage to the valve in turn usually causes a piston to be not so happy anymore.. Never rush. Rushing just creates new problems. When engine building always triple check every single thing. To many people working on one thing. Also working late into the night or working all day long makes it easy for mistakes to be made, even small mistakes or stupid mistakes are bound to happen when working late or when tired. I learned the absolute hardest way possible when reinstalling my freshly built trans into my truck. Did all the work in one day finishing around midnight and had it running/driving. After 65 miles I had to pull the trans back out because I broke an important part while working on it late after going at it all day. Tiredness and sloped driveway caused me a lot of extra work and another $500 😔

The guides and shims on an sr20det can only go in one way. This is something i see all the time with people building these. Look at your rocks arms, one side is machined for the guide, and the other is for the shim. People building these always f that part up, then you spit a rocker and commonly snap a rocker guide. The other things people don't understand is that the guides and shims need to be within a thousandth of an inch of each other. This will also cause you to throw a rocker or snap a guide. Same with the cam caps, they have to be the originals from the head you're working on. There are no such thing as replacement cam caps with out extensive machining. This is like the 5th video watching Adam having sr20det build problems, in Australia, I built there in my living room and never had an issue. Crazy that in the USA the SR has such a bad reputation, mainly caused by youtubers who don't know what they're doing, and their followers learning their mistakes from them. I just got done with a forged SR for my 240sx, and it runs and drives no problems. Do better Adam, or, hire an Australian to build your SR, Americans seem to be incapable
