I think the issue with the autopilot engagement may be a bit of user error. If I recall, that is not a button but rather a light. The autopilot engage button is on the other autopilot panel which is located on the the centre pedestal below the rudder trim wheel. The on/off switch is the right switch on that panel.

@@IntotheBlueSimulations I don’t blame you for thinking that 1/9 buttons should work like 8/9 buttons. I still don’t think think that’s the way it’s supposed to be and will continue to do so until I see evidence otherwise. The autopilot group of buttons is titled “MODE SELECTOR” not mode indicator for a reason.

As a Skymaster owner you should always start the rear engine first. Because you won’t hear it start over the sound of the front engine.

Yes thank you William, I’ve had a few others point out the same thing. I was trying to apply some logic; I figured starting the front engine first, might be safer from the point of view of alerting any bystanders (ahead of starting the rear engine, which the pilot can’t see). Obviously my logic was flawed though haha, but now I’ll know for the future ; ) Cheers! All the best : ) PS must be great fun owning a 337!

A nice review! I did about 200hrs in one of these in real life in the 80s. I feel the sound is a little out - in real life it has more of a gurgle if you like. The model I flew never had an auto pilot. I found on descent, 16 inches on the throttle would take you all the way down, and as you level out, the speed would drop off nicely to gear extend speed, flaps progression through the circuit and then into final approach with the progressive drag bringing your speed back nicely to approach without ever touching the throttle. She was always a pleasure to fly and very forgiving on landing, with a good butter always the order of the day. The 337 wasn't really a very practical craft. You could carry 6 like a 210, but then there was no luggage space, and a little slower than a non turbo Centurion. So the Centurion performed better, was more practical, but one engine of course... Thanks for bringing back some good memories.

Thanks very much Steve, happy you enjoyed the video - glad it brought back some memories. Appreciate the info; always interesting to get more of a feel for how an aircraft flies in real life. The 337 certainly looks like it would be good fun to operate. I’ve seen a few flying over the years and indeed, I’d always thought they offered more space than they seemingly do. I suppose there’s a good reason why they generally put the engines on the wings haha. Thanks again, all the best! : )

On the Skymaster you should always start the rear engine first because once you start the front engine you can't hear the rear engine start, and since you can't see the prop you rely on the sound to verify that the rear engine is running.
@IntotheBlueSimulations

Yes, thanks very much for the info, Renato. A few others did point out the same thing; my thought process was that as you can’t see if the prop area of the rear engine is clear, I figured starting the front engine would give any bystanders fair warning but, obviously my logic was flawed haha. Much appreciated. All the best! : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations It's good to have high standards, but one should be appreciative of reasonably high quality. I find the Carenado aircraft to be basically solid and very enjoyable to fly. Reviewers of products who fail to acknowledge the many good points and focus on just a few bad points leave me feeling like the reviewer is more interested in exhibiting themselves than in providing a balanced, useful review. I don't have the spare time for such reviewers and avoid them. In (sometimes rather stark, and pleasingly, so) contrast to your presentations, which I find extremely worthy of my attention (so I view them repeatedly, getting value from each view typically). Thanks to you for many useful tips and ideas; you have contributed substantially to my enjoyment of aircraft, scenery, airports, and Sim flying in general. Just one reader's opinions...

Well, I must say, thank you very much for the kind words once again, Art! It’s cheesy to say but, it’s always a sincere pleasure to hear that someone is enjoying the content. At this point, I think it’s just “trendy” to bash Carenado. Their bad reputation was initially earned (back in the days of FSX / P3D, they did put out some very buggy products, often with very little after-sales care - although even then, I still enjoyed many of their addons haha) but, they’ve put out pretty consistently decent products for MSFS (sure, some have had bugs and flight model quirks but, the bugs generally get fixed and most MSFS addons have had flight model quirks haha). People also complain that the aircraft aren’t accurate but, they aren’t trying to be so, why judge them as such? Carenado make some beautiful, unique aeroplanes, that are very reasonably priced and generally good fun to fly : ) Many thanks again, sir!

As an air cadet, I had the opportunity to go for a "ride along" in one of these flown by the USAF (a long time ago, obviously!). We flew out to a bombing range and FAC'd for various attackers, launching smoke rockets to mark targets, and all sorts of very cool things! While Carenado may not be "study level", they've certainly raised their standards for MSFS (for anyone with experience using their FSX products, the improvement is easy to see). Because of that, the 337 cool factor, and nostalgia, this addon is definitely being added to my hanger! Thanks for the usual fair and balanced review - some of the others I've seen are quite lacking.

Haha, well I don't know which Air Cadets you joined Urgent, but that's waaay cooler than anything I ever got to do?! : P Sounds brilliant. Very memorable I'm sure! I can certainly see why Carenado doesn't have a stellar reputation and I can also understand why some refuse to ever give them another penny haha. Objectively though, their work is much improved in MSFS (sure they still have bugs on release, but they've pretty much been fixing them without fail so far) and so far I have really enjoyed all of their output for the sim (though the Arrow III had me concerned, that they were heading back to their old ways). They produce some very beautiful aircraft with decent sounds and acceptable systems / flight models, all for (what I think) is a very fair price. To discount them entirely these days, I think one would be missing out! I hope they keep it up. Glad you enjoyed the review - thanks for the kind feedback. All the best! : )

I remember thinking how amazing this looked when it was released, but looking back now... the Carenado aircraft may be stunning visually, but there is just so little complexity. Every bit of these aircraft just feel empty once you've been flying aircraft with random failures and deep systems. Even many of the labels are wrong in this aircraft, like the engine monitor is for a single engine aircraft. I guess they're great if you only like the eye candy, but I would take the systems any day.

Hi Toby, I’m actually one of the people who don’t mind the Carenado aircraft for what they are. For sure it would be nice to see more depth on their addons (and they don’t come close to the likes of the Black Square King Air), but I still find most of their aircraft enjoyable for a bit of a cruise and they do make some interesting airframes, that others might not touch (the 337 being a case in point). What I’m secretly hoping for, is that Black Square manage to do some sort of tie-in with the Carenado aircraft, that could be epic (and I think it should be possible, since REP did something similar with some of the Carenado offerings in X-Plane 11)! We shall have to wait and see. . . Cheers once again and all the best! : )

I think this is one of the best cockpits Carenado has done so far next to the C170 cockpit. Sound wise from the videos I’ve seen the engine sounds seems decently accurate. This does seem like a good effort from Carenado. Also like someone mentioned the Autopilot master switch is down on the pedestal next to a climb/descent knob and a turn left/right knob. Some of the switches on this plane seem to be in bizarre locations 😂

GREAT flight (as usual) and the plane is what you would expect from Carenado. I personally feel you get what you pay for when purchasing a Carenado product. As always, if you want to go into "microsope mode" we can always find details that can be improved which is mostly in the modeling. As you point out there are a few things in the cockpit that need to be corrected in a future update, and I am sure they will. Looking forward to the next flight! !! !!!

Thanks again Mark! Very true. Carenado certainly had their ups and downs in FSX / P3D (and the value for money wasn’t always there with some of their older stuff) but in MSFS so far, I’ve been very happy with their output for the most part (the Arrow III was a bit of a “wobble”). Given the price, I think their products are generally a pretty nice option these days and I’m rather enjoying the 337 thus far. A patch is needed to clean a few things up, but that seems to be par for the course with any developer these days. . . Hope you had a great weekend. All the best! : )

I always love these "reviews" from you Blue, it has everything, getting the aircraft into the air from cold. Brilliant. I was awed by Carenado's faithful gear mechanics just beautiful how the wheels packed away in the rear, well done to them. I would buy this addon in a heartbeat as it's got to be one of their best so far, it's absolutely gorgeous...BUT :P I wish they would include a pilot/copilot system like SimWings added via weight. In the ipad (which you didn't cover tsk tsk) you there have the option to show both pilots but only in 3rd person. I immerse myself fully in the flight sim, so I ALWAYS have a copilot in 1st person and the biggest reason I don't buy more third party aircraft, inc helicopters is none of the addonmakers include this option. All you addonmakers, take a leaf out of SimWings book (inc you too JF) don't make these funky custom pilots, just add the default and the option to add a copilot in the ipad and a weight option for them to show in 1st person, everyone is happy and I would have bought this in a heartbeat. I hope Carenado might update this in the future because unless I can fly with copilot 14, from the default sim, in 1st person, I won't buy it. (unless there's a mod later) This Cessna is of course a beautiful addon, it's sad as there's so many really great addons coming out like BRsim Designs Beechcraft V Tail Bonanza (I love the classic gauge aircrafts as well) but no copilot? Oh well.

Hi Brave Heart, Very kind as always, I'm glad you enjoyed the video (despite me missing the ipad haha - which I did mean to cover, but forgot, as I am only human after all : P ). I completely agree; now that the precedent has been set by SWS and to some degree MILVIZ, it's a feature I would hope to see brought into more addons. It shouldn't be all that hard to achieve (I prefer custom pilot models myself, but the Asobo one's would certainly do the trick) and it really adds to the immersion overall. JF did actually have this feature early on with their Arrow III, did they do away with it then? Anyway the feature exists in the sim, let's make use of it! Cheers : )

I was looking forward to this plane so glad to see it's pretty decent. I think Carenado are alright. In the past their products were very much a mixed bag, some pretty decent some a bit shit but for MSFS it looks like they've upped their game a bit and have been putting out solid products. I hope they bring the Alabeo Staggerwing over, it flew nicely in FSX and is a beautiful plane and would look absolutely stunning in MSFS. That airfield you landed at looked quite cool, especially the winding river on final. Yeah, I know not everyone will agree, but I think Carenado have really upped their game coming into MSFS and I’ve really been enjoying their output for the sim so far (things got a little wonky with the Arrow III). They were hit and miss in the past for sure, but I would say that they’re a “good” developer as of MSFS (their products aren’t perfect, but then they aren’t expensive either. I hope they keep it up and don’t slip back into their old ways. I’d take a staggering for sure! I think their T-34 was one of my used sim aircraft of all time, so I’d be more than happy to see that (though not expecting we will). Very happy to hear you’re enjoying the 337 so far Inver! Cheers Jason, Fair point. I did actually cover the EGT gauge initially, but that got edited out of the video. As for the weather radar, it’s the same as the Seneca’s and is essentially just using the default Asobo architecture (which I gather is broken at the moment anyway?). The tablet, as Martin kindly points out, is down on the sidewall of the right footwell. The functionality is the same as Carenado’s other offerings. Cheers again! All the best : )

Hi Coast Flyer, Yes, I would say that it is one of their nicer offerings overall (although as I said during the review, I’ve appreciated their MSFS output for the most part). I totally understand where you’re coming from; always better to have quality over quantity and certainly better to cherry pick the aircraft that you think you’ll actually get good use out of. I remember seeing the sky master real world at an executive facility ( MacAlpines) at Luton airport when I was a youngster “ plane spotting” along with Riley Doves and airliners belonging to Autair ie Vickers Vikings the sky master looked exotic with the twin boom arrangement. I suppose now possibly say it’s “ iconic” ? Good review as always assume the tablet works looked to be R/H lower near floor location, function allowing the GTN 750 as a navigation option along with the usual other Carenado options. Disappointing that the A/P master switch not working unless actuated by preset key / switch. A few months ago I was “champing at the bit” to get this in my virtual hangar not so sure now, maybe spend the money on the twin otter when released from Aerosoft. Kind Regards Charlie

Indeed Charlie, I suppose you could say it’s a bit of an iconic design these days. I find the 337 looks both a little bit odd and aesthetically pleasing at the same time haha. Yes, a bit of an omission on my part, forgetting to cover the tablet. It has all of the same functionality as on the other Carenado aircraft though (including the option to switch out the GNS530 for the GTN750). A mistake on my part regarding the autopilot master as well. There’s actually another AP panel down on the lower console. It contains the AP master as well as a pitch and roll wheel. (I saw it when going over the aircraft, but somehow forgot about it at the time haha). Still a little bit strange that all the buttons worked except the AP one though. . . The C377 is nice, but I would say the Twin Otter offers more depth and versatility overall. Cheers! : )

Thanks for this excellent review (as always). I purchased the plane as soon as it was available. Wondering if you found a discrepancy with the throttle quadrant? I have the Honeycomb Throttle and discovered that the left handles (throttle, prope, mixture) controlled the rear engine and right handles the front engine. The labels says front and then rear. I had to create a separate profile for the 337 with these switched so they matched the physical throttle unit. Did you have the same issue? Also: for descending the ascending, there is a knob on the A/P at the bottom of the pedestal that can be used to set amount of vertical speed. It is a little cumbersome but works once you get the hang of it. Thanks!

My pleasure Dennis! I expect I probably am suffering the same issue as you, but I use a Warthog HOTAS at the moment and assign each control (throttle, prop, mixture) to a single axis. As a result, any such discrepancy isn’t really noticeable. I do hope that Carenado get that fixed up then - shouldn’t be too tricky. Thanks re the autopilot. Despite having seen the unit when first checking out the aircraft, for some reason my brain forgot all about it during the flight haha! Cheers once again Dennis! All the best : )

The C337-H (ver-1.0.0) for MSFS has a problem with the Prop levers not causing a change in the RPM's of the engines when you "Cycle" the Prop levers. I reported this to Carenado, they replied that they would look into this issue. I also noticed that sometimes the ADF needle swings erratically even though you are holding a stead track - not sure why.

Many aircraft with adjustable pitch blades require a lot of oil pressure to operate...if you take the MP up high...the prop levers do indeed change the pitch/rpm during cycling. During run up on a real 182T we cycle the blades at 1800 rpm
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed Tim. It could be that there’s something specific with the 337’s engines, but the Carenado- provided checklist calls for 1,800 rpm during the run-up and cycling the props at that power setting does absolutely nothing currently. Every constant speed aircraft I’ve ever flown, you’ll see an effect cycling the prop during the run up (as you allude to). So it could be aircraft specific, but I think it’s more likely something that Carenado needs to fix (the same was true of their Arrow III on release). Cheers : )

SOP on the 337 is to start the rear engine first. You can't see the prop, so you go a lot by sound on the startup. Also, SE Performance is best on the rear engine. Flys like a bigger 182 or 210!

Thanks Robert. Someone else pointed this out also. 50/50 and I was bound to get it wrong haha. My logic was that as the pilot can’t see what’s going on behind, at least starting the front engine first would give any bystanders fair warning of the situation - flawed logic apparently though haha. Is the rear engine actually a little more powerful (I see the two idle at slightly different rpms), or is it just that the pusher prop is a little more efficient overall? Cheers for the info! : )

I'm a licensed commercial/twin/multi/IFR pilot and frequent flight simmer since FS 1995. Let me preface tmy comments by saying I enjoyed your video a lot but have a question or two, if that's okay with you. Just wondering why you took off without flaps extended? Was that because you were lightly loaded with just you onboard, half fuel and chose a long runway and therefore didn't need flaps? That might explain why you rotated at nearly 85 knots! In the real world, the book number for Vr varies somewhat, depending upon the amount of flaps extended and the aircraft's takeoff weight. Fully loaded the 337's zero degree flap rotation speed would be only about 60 knots (69 mph), just a paltry 5 knots above the lowly Cessna 172's Vr. Rotating at significantly higher than standard speeds puts more stress on the tires and extened hetakeoff roll unnecessarily. If both mills quit at 200 feet above ground level. say, due the fuel selectors being set incorrectly, you'd rather not have to wait for the flaps to become fully extended in the froughly 15 seconds you have left before contacting the ground. Essentially Vr starts at the beginning of the thicker section of the white arc on the airspeed indicator, which for the 337 begins at 60 knots and ends at 88 knots. The thinner white arc above that is the flaps10 degrees allowable airspeed band, which permits speeds with ten degres of flaps extneded from sixty to one-hundred-and-ten knots. Or if you want to ... say ... cruise climb at 110 knots with 10 degess of flaps extended for some reason, or choose to throw out the first notch of flaps at 110 knots as a speed brake on close final to a large, busy airport. With ten degrees of flaps extended, the C-337's stall speed would be a bit lower than its Vs value of about 58 knots. With full flaps extend Vso might be as low as 54 or 55 knots; even a bit lower if you're flying away at well below max takeof weight (MTOW). Also, If you had the pitch trim set to the takeoff setting prior to the takeoff roll and just held the wheel back in your lap, the Skymaster's nose will lifted up obediently at 60 knots, folowed by the mains a knot or two faster. At least that's wha happns in a real airplane, not a game lie FS 2020. Lastly, I believe you mentioned one wing seemed a bit heavy. I flew in a P-337 a few dozen times on busines trips back in the 1980s. I believe it had aileron trim installed. I'm not sure whether the normally aspirated or turbo-charge models had that feature as an option.

Hello Douglas, Thanks very much; I’m glad you enjoyed the video and indeed, I’m always happy to try and answer any questions! Your question regarding the flap setting, is a fairly easy one to answer. I was using the C337 checklist provided with the addon and for a Normal Takeoff, the checklist states that the flaps can be set anywhere from UP to 1/3 DOWN. I don’t know whether that’s true to life, but obviously I can’t learn every addon aircraft to the Nth degree, so have to rely pretty heavily on checklists for my videos. I opted to go with flaps up because, as you mention, the aircraft was lightly loaded and runway length wasn’t limiting. With regards to the rotation speed, I don’t recall now in all honesty but, either I misread the checklist and rotated at 85kts instead of 85mph (quite likely), or I was just using a guesstimated speed for Vr which again, I often tend to do when flying GA aircraft in the sim, as I can’t commit exact speeds for each type to memory (but most GA aircraft fly to roughly the same numbers and can be flown somewhat by “feel” in the sim anyway). I don’t recall whether or not Carenado’s C337 has aileron trim. I’m sure it probably does, if the real-world aircraft is also equipped as such. My natural inclination was to try and trim out the rolling tendency with rudder trim (for which I have hardware binds assigned) but of course, aileron trim would make more sense with the push / pull prop configuration (I didn’t even think to try it haha). I hope that clarifies things a little? All the best! : )
@douglasmcintyre3297
@douglasmcintyre3297 Жыл бұрын
Not sure whether "... aileron trim would make more sense with the push/pull prop configuration ..." of th C-337. I just think the natural inclination, at least for my flying, would be to add a roll input to lift a low wing back to level, then simply employ aileron trim as necesary to keep the wings level. I don't think that would be affected by whether airplane is a single tractor driven design, a pusher design, a convention side by side twin or a push/pull twin design like the Skymaster, Adams A500, Rutan Defiant, Dornier 335 and the exquisite twin turboprop Dornier Seastar. Of course for every aircraft equipped with aileron trim, there is an aileron trim takeoff setting which must be set before takeoff, just as there are for takeoff pitch and takeoff trim settings. Up to a certain bank angle, say 45 degrees or so, there may be enough rudder effectiveness to raise a low wing back to level. I suppose the aircraft's specific speed and attitude would dictate which recovery method is best. Down low, like just after takeoff, it makes little sense to me to lift a wing with rudder when I can do it quickly safely with a roll input; but up at cruise altitude with plenty of sky underneath me, either recovery technique would probably suffice. @@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Hello again, Douglas Well true, perhaps not “more sense”; I suppose what I really meant, was that rudder trim presumably wouldn’t be necessary on something like the C337, as an engine-out scenario isn’t going to produce the same sorts of asymmetry that one would see on a more typical twin (I assume, aileron trim would therefore be sufficient under most / all circumstances). I can’t say that I’m speaking from experience though, as I don’t recall ever having flown an aircraft with aileron trim haha. Cheers again for your thoughts. All the best!

Hi Jack, I use a device called TrackIR. It monitors one’s head movements and then inputs them into the sim. It’s great, though a little pricey. There are cheaper / freeware options available also, if you want to give it a try (FaceTrackNOIR for example). I hope that clarifies things. Cheers and all the best! : )

Hi JP, Sounds like you're experiencing the same issues I had during the video. What I had missed at the time (and I expect you may have found by now) is there is actually another autopilot unit, located on the lower console. This unit has an autopilot master, pitch wheel, roll wheel etc. . . As for the GTN 750, I haven't had a chance to try that myself in the aircraft. I'm surprised that the aircraft would be causing such an issue (as opposed to it being an issue with the mod itself), but I'm sure you know more than I do about that one! I hope that helps a bit. GLARING OMISSIONS really destroy my faith in and ability to become immersed in these simulations. If developers aren’t aware of glaringly obvious things like a non-functional autopilot button, one can only imagine how (un)real the simulation might be “under the hood.” So sad.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean Aerostar; I don’t mind a few convoluted bugs, hidden away here and there (so long as they are fixed up quickly), it’s to be expected really. But to have blindingly obvious flaws with a product, it makes you wonder how on Earth such things get through testing (and I assume they don’t go unnoticed, which means the devs just say “screw it, we’ll release it anyway”. The autopilot didn’t bother me nearly as much as the prop levers during the run-up. I can’t imagine that prop behaviour was accurate and that should have been immediately obvious to anyone who tested it (and not that hard to fix presumably). I will say though, that Carenado do seem to be a lot more proactive with patches these days. I see they’ve already updated the C337, so hopefully that’s address most of the issues I found during the flight (haven’t had a chance to try the update yet). Cheers!
