This made me come up with so many questions. -When you do a canvas like this, do people look down on it? Would it sell just as easily as a painting done directly on the canvas itself? Just curious, because I really like the idea of it. -Could you do the same technique with paintings done in other media, like watercolor or gouache for instance? Thank you. Sorry for my ignorance.
@carengoodrich6 жыл бұрын
I’ve sold a lot of these, I haven’t lost a sale (that I know of) because it was mounted. The key to this technique is to be able to seal it with a clear coat. Watercolor wouldn’t work. I’ve never used gouche so I don’t know about that one.

Do you have to use gesso to attach the water color painting? Does the gesso come in different colors or do you mix the colors to get what you want?

@monicaeggleton45107 жыл бұрын
Hi Caren, Why don't you use gel medium from NovaColor? The prices are better, for sure! (Or is it for ease of reference.) Thank you for the demonstration; instead of just saying to gesso a canvas, use gel medium to adhere the paper to the canvas, and than when dry use poly acrylic coat to seal and finish. I am serious, often people just gloss over the details to finishing, only wanting to demonstrate the art piece. This is great information to carry over to other aspects/techniques of painting as well. I enjoy following you for all the details you give in each video, you are prepared and stay on point, giving good teaching instructions. Thank you as well for all your time and effort (as well as tips you add).Thank you to you camera crew. (Lol) He/she does a wonderful job with focusing and following your demonstration.

and TY your videos are very informative for a beginner. How many ounces of paint do you put in?
@carengoodrich7 жыл бұрын
My mix is approximately 1 part paint, 3 parts pouring medium, and a dash of water. A few drops of silicone in each individual color mix.
@curtiswallen89775 жыл бұрын
Do you prefer not framing behind glass because it takes away from some of the textures, or another reason?
@carengoodrich5 жыл бұрын
Curtis Wallen extra cost, hassle, glare, potential breakage, etc. I think frames in general detract from the artwork, and glass is another layer that further distances the viewer from the piece. With our improved quality art materials these days, too me glass is a thing of the past.

Thanks so much Caren! Can you tell me if this varnish is non yellowing and most importantly, is it a toxic smelling product? I'm highly sensitive to odors. I need very, very low odor products. Thanks again! 😊
@carengoodrich7 жыл бұрын
Rhonnie Day I've never seen yellowing after using it for many years. It is water based so the odor is way less than the oil based version. I can smell it slightly but don't know what to say beyond that.
@rhonnieday73897 жыл бұрын
Caren Goodrich thanks Caren. Maybe I'll ask Home Depot to open a can and let me smell it lol... 😉

I'm going to give that mounting method a try. I, too, hate mounting behind glass. Also, if you like painting on paper but hate the wrinkling and curling, check out Terraskin - totally waterproof and not at all like Yupo, which I personally dislike.

this is really not a comment more of a question. what # in the novaplex pouring medium do you use #233 or #235?

Becky O'Hara I have used both, leaning towards 235 these days.
@lindafelder41987 жыл бұрын
I really like this technique. I will try with my Acrylic pours. Thank you. I also work with alcohol inks. Do you know if you can use Yupo paper painted with alcohol inks that has been sprayed with Kamar, UV, and Triple thick with this Polyacrylic varnish and attached to the canvas?

Thanks for showing us this. I noticed the Nova paints and will give them a try. Much more cost effective. Do you use them for all your artwork or do you switch to Golden or more expensive paint for pours and other stuff?
@carengoodrich7 жыл бұрын
Nova is good for all sorts of painting. I do use different brands at different times but Nova is not inferior.

Thank you so much. My house is full on canvas, and with 4 kids Im finding it hard to store them, and protect them from little hands. I love canvas, but paper would be so much better to work with. Thank you so much :-D Feeling creative again.
@beckyohara4147 жыл бұрын
hi caren, how long do you wait for the gesso to dry on the canvas before doing a pouring?
@carengoodrich7 жыл бұрын
Becky O'Hara just until it's dry to the touch--an hour, maybe less. But I usually gesso ahead of time so I always have something dry and ready to go!
@clarissalee53987 жыл бұрын
Hi Caren, is it possible not to use the clear gloss? Like just mount the paper on the canvas and then give it to the recipient?
@carengoodrich7 жыл бұрын
Clarissa Lee exposed paper needs a protective coat. That’s why art on paper typically is framed behind glass. The Minwax finish is a protective coat that eliminates the need for glass, but if you don’t like gloss, it also comes in semi gloss and matte.
@blimaspetner28677 жыл бұрын
what is the advantage of using black gesso over say just painting it black with paint?
@dianehampton35137 жыл бұрын
I tried this and the paper bowed up on the sides when it dried so I don't know if it'll lay flat or not so I don't really know what to do about that now. I did one about a week ago and it never laid flat and I did too yesterday and they're drying and they're rolling up to on the sides. I like this technique but I don't know what it's going to do I'll see about putting them on the canvas to see if they'll stay thanks. I think you saw the ones I did the other day they were pink I think you commented on it. Thank you for being interested. I love watching your videos they inspire me.
