Cool, but not what i wanted (i wanted this about 5 or more years ago). At this point, i really want an all electric ranger. I dont need a f150 sized truck and im addicted to electric at this point. It will definitely help move people that can't or won't go full electric.

Really keen for the Everest version. Hopefully it doesn't cost 100k though, because at that point, it has to be justifiable over a 300 series landcruiser. And that's a tough sell. Even at 90k that's close enough to upsell to a landcruiser.

This is a great stop forward by ford, im not a ranger guy but i hope the other manufacturers follow suit. Having access to the lithium battery negates the need for any dual battery setup which is easily a couple grand for a good lithium build. Hybrids are a good balance between full EV and ICE. Really hoping the battery tech can keep up because that seems to be the limiting factor. Question for Paul. you mentioned some of the other competitors Mitsubishi notably has said nothing is coming at this stage. Given Nissan will be the next to launch something with Navara due for an update soon do you think they will utilise E-power as it seems to be the pick of the X-Trail fleet at the moment??

$100k is WAY too much. They need to release a base level spec at a small premium above the current 2WD base price of mid to high $40k range. Its only going to have a small battery, so extra cost shouldn't be huge. If they start this range at $60k on road I'll be at the front of the queue...otherwise I'll be buying something else. It's a work ute, not a sports car, $100k is a ridiculous notion.

I would prefer a hybrid that regen’s via engine and braking, not a plug-in. Why not have a hybrid bi-turbo diesel 3 litre v6, electric = torque so that with the diesels torque surely is a good idea. It will still reduce fuel economy, maybe not as much as a plug-in but i’d like to see it.

Plug ins do regen via engine and braking also... They wont have the V6 because of space and weight, with the batteries you'd have an absolute tank... would most likely be the 4cyl twin turbo.

Come on Paul. Ever since you had your diff issue with your Raptor - which Ford sorted for you without any issue (probably due to your platform and ability to project your displeasure) - you’ve been really negative on Ford. Yes, batteries and motors will add weight, but you only present the assumptions that capacities will suffer; you don’t suggest they might just increase the GVM to compensate for the additional weight. Your tone and commentary in this video really comes across as almost suggesting Ford would put the vehicle on sale with such capacities that it would be over GVM almost immediately. It’s just such a negative spin for someone purporting to be a “car expert”; you just come across as “Car Pessimist”. Why does William Stopford publish an article on the CarExpert website saying “The rear frame has additional bracing to support the battery, and a charging point has been fitted alongside the fuel filler. Ford also says it uses heavy-duty suspension, while the steering has been retuned.” Why would the suspension be upgraded to “heavy duty” if the battery and motor was somehow going to be eating away at the payload? William goes on to say “The company hasn’t confirmed a payload figure, other than to say there’s “no lessening of the payload… versus what we have on today’s line-up”.” So why do you jump in front of the camera to suggest it’s all doom and gloom, whilst your journalists are out contradicting you? You also spoke about the PHEV as if it was a standalone model (e.g. XLT, Sport, Wildtrak, PHEV, Platinum), however Ford has stated that the PHEV is a package that will be available on as-yet unspecified models. Ergo, you might find XLT PHEV’s, and Wildtrak PHEV’s, and Platinum PHEV’s. This might in fact make the price of some PHEV variants fairly reasonable. FURTHER, all indications (though not confirmed), are that this could be coming from South Africa - a country Australia doesn’t have a Free Trade Agreement with, thus copping a 5% import tariff. If you didn’t state that because it would be speculation, then why state concerns over payload? You have a moral obligation as a reporter to present information, not peddle a agenda against those you hold grudges against. Don’t carry your bitterness into your reporting otherwise people will turn off from you as a source for quality information.
@CarExpertAus
@CarExpertAus Жыл бұрын
You’ve got your head in the clouds if you think PHEV won’t affect the vehicle’s core performance characteristics. It’s simple maths - the extra 200-300kg from PHEV equipment will eat into payload. Exceeding that amount will put the customer over their GVM. The only way around this is to offer a GVM upgrade, which will then have wider performance limitations (a brace for a 200kg battery isn’t a GVM upgrade!). I’m not negative on Ford at all - I literally bought one of them. Ford has had a number of issues with Ranger (mine included) - it’s just a fact. No point in trying to sugar coat it. EDIT: Should also add - Will’s coverage is based on Ford’s media release; which as you’d expect is glowing and devoid of any useful numbers.
@CM303898
@CM303898 Жыл бұрын
@@CarExpertAusyour are right that it will have an affect, but clearly your experience with your Ford is having an affect on your journalistic coverage of Ford products… We don’t know what the changes will be to the underpinnings of the Rangers that are optioned with the PHEV package. as Ford said, there will be additional bracing on the rear frame, heavy duty suspension, and re-tuned suspension. If they do manage to derive the suggested 270kW/680Nm (or up to 800Nm as some other media outlets suggest), then these could be quite lively. We can’t just slate heavier vehicles as “will be worse” without actually driving them. The RA Ranger Wildtraks are 150-200kg heavier than the PX3 Wildtraks, yet we don’t suggest the PX3’s were better handling propositions. If Ford say they’re going to strengthen the chassis and upgrade the suspension, they aren’t doing it to carry the same weight; they’re looking to carry more. If Ford is saying they are looking to ensure “no lessening of the payload”, then maybe they are increasing the GVM from 3,150 to 3,350-3,400kg. If they are increasing the GVM by the weight of the hybrid package, then the payload won’t suffer. Is it credible journalism to infer doubt they wouldn’t follow through with their own claims to ensure no reduction in payload? No one is sugar coating there have been issues with the new Ranger, but just come out and say that you doubt Ford will deliver a faultless product if you don’t have confidence they will. Or are those sweet advertising dollars and invitations to corporate events more important? As I said, we don’t know what the final specs will be, but you’re video is basically throwing enormous skepticism on the versatility and efficacy of a PHEV Ranger in defiance of their statements to the contrary, and without any drive to substantiate that position. I don’t expect you to say a PHEV Ranger is the greatest vehicle of 2024, or to say “Ford is the best”. I’m just saying that this video came across as very skeptical and suggestive of a vehicle with enormous shortfalls, without you even knowing it will be. It’s one thing to just assume that because there’s more weight there will be less payload, but they’ve said there won’t be less payload, so reserve judgement until the verdict comes in.

@@mazvitaphiri3965 each to there own. I won’t be buying one, but I’m quite confident that vehicle will sell in incredible numbers, and will be just useable as any other Ranger. Soon enough there’ll be a LWB Ranger, and I might even expect Ford to offer the 2.3L Ecoboost as a stand-alone powertrain option by the end of next year. Meanwhile no one else is even playing in the same league as Ford. This model will be pounced on by Fleets/Rental car agencies/mines/etc, and really own the market. Ford has really been killing it in the last few years (globally). Chevrolet and Dodge have killed their Camaro and Callenger, whilst Ford has grown its Mustang family. Toyota killed their V6 in the Tacoma, replacing it with a 4 cylinder petrol, meanwhile when it’s come to the LC250/Prado, they did the same, and left Australia with the boat anchor 2.8 diesel. It’ll be the end of the road for Toyota if they make the same call for next gen Hilux. Ford’s playing to all their strengths, whilst their competitors are either abandoning the market, or abandoning their senses. I think people will go where the popularity is. Ranger is less than 900 vehicles behind Hilux this year in the sales race, and once Toyota replace the Hilux, it’ll be back to square one with getting aftermarket parts and support, whilst Ranger will already be established. There could very really be a changing of the guard at the top of the vehicle sales ladder soon, and it won’t get better for Toyota once the new model drops. They’re being forced into playing to their reliability card which just makes them look outdated and boring, or they’ll be dragged into adding tech and complexity, which will hurt their reliability moniker. Ford might not be scoring bullseyes, but by the time the competition drops new models, Ford will have ironed out these issues, whilst the competition is in the headlines for new model gremlins. I sold my 2011 Subaru for a new Ranger, and whilst it hasn’t been faultless, I’ve not had to return it to the dealership for anything. These are good utes.

With over a third of aussies homes on solar, being able to charge it from solar for free will provide us with essentially free driving around town. And the extra torque on tap will be perfect for off road.

I just watched this launch on the news, what concerns me is delivery times and costs to consumers. Then there’s the alleged after sale challenges. Ford needs to address the current product supply and service before ramping up a new line, at an increased cost.

Yep, they'll be buying BYDs. Mainstream car manufacturers have gone nuts with their pricing. They all seem to be targeting the top end of the market & leaving the base level stuff to the Chinese. The high end brands are increasingly being produced in China now too so it's becoming a bit of a rort.
