All cities have some unattractive industrial areas and Basel is no exception. However, being at the meeting point of France, Germany and Switzerland, it is vitally important for European trade and it is interesting to see, in this video, how the countries work together. For those who have never been to Basel, it isn't just railway lines and motorways, it is an attractive, historic city and well worth a visit.

Running through the yard at the beginning shows the international nature of Basel well; Swiss (SBB and BLS), German (DB) and French (SNCF) locos, plus MRCE locos leased by SBB Cargo International.

There's a very steep, if brief, climb on the harbour branch. At 22:58 there's a short hump of 3.8% up (about 1 in 26), and then 2.5% down (about 1 in 38). (And vice versa the other way, of course.)Not too much of a challenge for an Re 620 with only 310 tonnes on the drawbar, though.

A few observations and questions! I note at 15:05 that the registration arms on the catenary becomes Swiss again, Furrer and Frey I think, similar to that being used in the UK now on some parts of the Great Eastern and Western mail lines. Shortly after both the stanchions and the catenary revert to Swiss type. Why does German catenary and signalling appear across the border into Switzerland. At most borders both of these change to the host country, e.g. the line to Luino in Italy to the Swiss border has both Italian catenary and signals, although the electricity is of the Swiss voltage and the line is used by Swiss trains. And why isn't the change over at the same place for both?

Anyone know if that signal box at 15:01 is still connected to us or the intermodal yard to the right? Looks like it was next to the tracks years ago before the over road was built or the road in the dip? Looks strange facing no lines, then a semaphore signal the other side of the stilled over road.
@Thunderer08724 ай бұрын
LOL at 25:05 we return to said semaphore, which pulls off but the colour light changes after. So must be that same signal box in use but not next to any tracks. Nice one.

Ooo, mechanical signal in Switzerland? why does DB have a network and stations in Switzerland, with its own rules? greetings from Romania
@RailwayEmotions4 жыл бұрын
This is part of some very old contracts between the two countries.
@chriswood52053 жыл бұрын
Because those lines and that station were built by the Baden State Railway (a predecessor of DB), and is on the Oberrheinbahn/Hochrheinbahn route that links Mannheim with Singen (both, of course, in today's Germany). It just happens to cross Swiss territory on the way, which required some interesting diplomacy back in 1852, but the treaty established then still stands. As you can see from the 1852 date, this is a very old railway line indeed. Indeed it is so early that it was built before the standardisation on 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) gauge, and was originally built to 1,600 mm (5 ft 3 in) gauge. It was converted pretty quickly though.

@@chriswood5205 Interesting diplomacy. The same diplomacy did not work at Vennbahn, where the embankment remained in Belgian territory

Do you have any aerial views of the harbour area(s) so I can see the location and layout relative to Basel and the Rhine ? Good to see the use of semaphore signals. Does the change in regulations DB/SBB mean right hand to left hand running and other rules? Change of signalling goes with this or are there other factors?
@RailwayEmotions4 жыл бұрын
Google Maps is your friend for aerial views. Change in regulations and signalling means that everything is done the way the respective country does it. This includes right hand running, which however does not exist inside of stations.

Schön auch mal eine Strecke erleben zu können, die dem Reisenden verborgen bleibt! Wurde die 620 bei 310 t Zuggewicht wegen der 38 Promille Steigung aus dem Hafenbahnhof verwendet?
@RailwayEmotions5 жыл бұрын
Die Loks werden nach Maximallast vorbestellt und dann eingesetzt. Es ist dann durchaus möglich, dass weniger Wagen gezogen werden müssen und die Lok an der Front ein wenig übermotorisiert ist.

The jobs that keep the economy working. I notice that some of the tracks in the port are not electric, and my atlas indicates some of the industries could have dangerous cargoes. Looks like a place for fireless locos, as well as diesels if prevented from over revving on gas leaks.
@Xoron5 жыл бұрын
The actual reason is more likely that the trains need to be loaded by crane.

Confused in Los Angeles, Ca. USA ! Did we start out in a single loco, then go a l o n g distance just to couple onto freight cars, then head back with them to where we started ??! That's what it looked like to me soon as motorman went to opposite end of loco, seemingly going around the cars and coupling on. If so, Why wasn't there a loco already at that end of the trip to do the job ? What don't I get ? Please explain... Mark

Which train protection system (systems?) is used on this line? PZB?
@TuukkaVarjoranta5 жыл бұрын
It's called the Euro-Signum which is the transition phase from Integra-Signum (the original train protection system used in Switzerland similar to PZB) to ETCS - the European train control system!

If a train would derail on the bridge, the third track would keep it from falling off the bridge.
