For those who enjoy a faster frame rate: 60p Video: • Glattbrugg - Basel 60p
Enjoy a beautiful trip along the Rhein, the northern boarder of Swizterland and Germany on a late Autumn's day. This is a very special stretch of track, especially the section between Koblenz and Laufenburg, because there is no longer passenger services operating on it. It is one of the few tracks in Switzerland serving only freight traffic. The highlight for me is crossing the Aare river just before it enters the Rhein after Koblenz. We are travelling with 2 empty Kerosin trains coupled together, forming a long but not overly heavy tank car train with destination Germany.
The video was recorded at 50p, however the final file turned out to be 25p. A 60p version is now available.
What was the highlight for you?

Really great video. Nice to see the type of loco/train that you are traveling in. Wish more cab ride sites would do this, also good to have English captions as well. One thing that is so noticeable as on other European railways is lack of line side fencing. Does this mean the Swiss public are more responsible and sensible as to not endanger themselves by roaming on the railway? Not here in the U.K. high fences and barbed wire have to be used to keep the morons out. Such a shame. The other noticeable thing is lack of litter and rubbish, along with Indian railways the U.K. must be the worst. You are so lucky in Switzerland.

Former U. S. railroader here. I'm trying to understand the Swiss signaling system a little bit. Can someone tell me what the signal in a circle with a digital number below it means? There were several shown, one was showing "6", another "4", and I believe one was a "7". There is no equivalent in the U. S. as far as i know. I'm thinking it is there to tell the engineer where there are multiple possible tracks a train could take, which one his train is heading for? Am I close to what it means?

@48:21 Interesting, on the bridge, the safety rail on the left side is missing. Since the track is curving right, the right side safety rail won't stop a derailment.
@lorirocks777
@lorirocks777 5 жыл бұрын
MidnightVisions The right safety rail actually stops the train from veering to the left in the case of a derailment by catching the right wheels.
@MidnightVisions
@MidnightVisions 5 жыл бұрын
@@lorirocks777 But if it derails to the right, then there is noting stopping it. The train is not only curving to the right, the track is super elevated, (leaning to the right). The safety rails should be on both sides, not just one. Its incomplete.
@lorirocks777
@lorirocks777 5 жыл бұрын
MidnightVisions Perhaps. The tracks are forcing the train to the right even though the momentum wants to continue straight. The way I see it, if the train derailed, it would tend to veer to the left, in accordance with the momentum. Also, the left wheels would eventually be caught on the inside rail, stopping the train from continuing to the right. The speed limit on the bridge is 30km/h, so if there was a derailment, I don't think much would happen before the train stopped.
@MidnightVisions
@MidnightVisions 5 жыл бұрын
@@lorirocks777 The purpose of safety rails are to prevent the train from hitting either sides of the bridge after derailment. If the train derails within the safety rail zone it can be lifted back onto the track. Once the train contacts the bridge sides in a derailment, the bridge and the train will be very damaged, and external equipment will be required to remove the train and repair the bridge. Having a rail on one side assumes the train will derail only in an over speed situation, whereas a broken rail, or expansion / contraction misalignment can cause a derailment to either side.

I presume those locos with the faces painted on them in the siding down on the left at 1:23:45 are withdrawn?
@lorirocks777
@lorirocks777 5 жыл бұрын
AndreiTupolev Yes. A number of Re 4/4 II & IIIs have been withdrawn recently due to changes in local freight traffic. The ironic part is their scraps end up in the Eoas wagons that they once pulled :-(
@lorirocks777
@lorirocks777 5 жыл бұрын
There are often 2 phases they go through. First they can be deactivated and put aside if demand isn't high. This usually happens when they're due for a major service. At 53:14 you can see locomotives that have been deactivated. Afterwards they are either reactivated or scrapped, and Kaiseraugst is one of the places they get scrapped. Reactivation is usually carried out in Bellinzona.

Hallo, Frachtfelsen triple7. Herb.

Here's a little factoid, piece of trivia, you may not be aware of: Although Australia is a vast, mostly dry land, with the bulk of the population centres on the coastal fringes, we do have an alpine region in part of our Great Dividing Range. The alps (located in New South Wales and Victoria) receive good snowfalls in winter and are home to ski-fields and tourist resorts. The area is tiny in comparison to the rest of the continent....but...... ...........our snowfields are larger than all of Switzerland. :)

@Dr Moriarty That can't be correct, Doc. There are passenger trains seen in the video .... here's one approaching at 17:40 (Eglisau). My guess is that as it is 10:45 AM (refer to clock on RH platform 18:10 ), commuters are at work. He does say that "...between Koblenz and Laufenburg....", so maybe that's the section without passenger service?

Simple. There were not enough passengers at certain locations to justify keeping the stations open.

Some were closed, because (as @kornellred already noted) there were not enough passengers. On the other hand, some new stations were opened: Rheinfelden Augarten (about 10 years ago) and Salina Raurica (I don't know, when this one opened)

Railway corridors the world over are canvasses for graffiti. One thing we all have in common, regardless of race, creed or colour.

When did graffiti become common? If you look at railway pictures from the 80's in Switzerland you pretty much won't find any trains with any graffiti.

@@lorirocks777 In the late 80's - early 90's, as mobile phones & the internet evolved. It was the same down here.......graffiti on rolling stock and lineside infrastructure was rarely seen before the mid-80's.

I think you may have to go to North Korea to see any railways without graffiti.

Beautiful country and fantastic Railway plant. However, one cannot but be saddened by the extent of the graffiti on everything that vandals can use to display their mediocrity. Ontario, Canada. 2019/12/24.

@berndmayer3984
@berndmayer3984 5 жыл бұрын
Weiterhin gute Fahrt!
