Those 8 pointed screws use a #2 square bit to fit the screw head.

Excellent! I bought 32 x 14 at Home Depot for $48 each versus trailer windows for $200, same size but with trim rings, saved beaucoup $$s. Thanks for the video!

To those who are wondering about these as a RV window read this... Shed windows and more actually supplies these windows to a few teardrop manufacturers in their area. Just to clarify if they will hold up. I ordered 2 after they told me this. 👍

Thank you for the tip! I've been looking for every way to avoid $200 (even used) RV windows! The only thing I'm going to do differently is to put a ring of butyl tape around the window opening on the outside, so when you screw it in and the window presses against it, it will seal the opening better than caulk would.

So glad I found this Jim! Just getting started on my cargo trailer conversion. Thanks man!

You can use a square bit on the 8 point star screws
@kst3576 жыл бұрын
Pretty cool and thanks for the info. The only drawback I see is that RV windows come with an inside casement or trim that can be trimmed to match the finished wall thickness. With these windows if your insulation & interior wall is thicker than the window frame you'll need to make some custom framing to make it blend in. It's extra work but worth the trouble for the reduced cost.

Awesome GREAT... just what I was looking for !!!! Thanks soooo.... much. And also thank you for replying to other people's comments as follow ups. those darn weird star screws... had me stumped until other people posted the square head... I had to make my own tool to extract some today.. but now I know the square head bit works. I am confused..... At approx 2minutes and 20seconds... you are using vice grips to remove the "star screw" that is going to the exterior of trailer.... 1.) Was this just a demonstration... or did you remove screws to put the window in...??? maybe the screws needed to be taken out so the window would be flush with the exterior. I guess once I pop off the plywood.. I will understand.. or look at the video again of the exterior of the mount. I go kayak fishing up here on the Chesapeake Bay.. and took my trailer down to Point Lookout as a bivwack... made a plywood bed etc etc... so if weather got real bad I could hunker down. Mostly I stayed in my tent... but the last night winds went 30knots and rain... so I used the trailer... I even had an electric heater with me.. as temps got in the mid 40's... From that experience I learned... and now exploring all the cool stuff people have done modifying these trailers. Now that it is summer... I want windows !!!!!! Also... I looked into a bunch of fans... to cool off... and most of them are not so good. I found these guys... they make a Marine fan for boats and super low amp/watt draw... You can just do a search for Caframo Ultimate , they make good stuff. About $50. Also.. I just checked... my wood paneling screws are not "shot" in.. just good old screws. thanks for pointing that out on your build.. I would have been stumped otherwise. AND LOVE the American Flag on video !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again so much... happy camping.. fishing, or whatever...

Excellent job. I ordered two for my trailer today. Thanks.

Thank you. Too many individuals just show their finished modifications without demonstrating how they did it, and that's no help at all.

I had the same fight with those same fasteners. I ended up ripping the panels off the walls doing all kinds of damage and one panel and to be replaced. Garbage fasteners and wood. Fortunately I have square cross section ribs with 14.5" edge to edge. This window will fit without any cutting of steel ribs which must have been difficult for you. They are now $40 with shipping.

I bought those windows for a tiny house. They are OK, but somewhat difficult to raise and lower. Not a deal killer for the money, but something to consider.

The eight point star fastener takes a square head drive had the same problem got one at harbor freight=, the square fits into eight point works perfect.

Just so everyone knows, a carbide tip toothed circular saw blade cuts aluminum very nicely. An abrasive blade isn't needed. I don't understand why so many new screw head designs have come out. When I was younger there were slotted and Philips screw heads. Now we have to buy all kinds of special attachments to use the ever expanding types of screws that are being invented.

Cool! That is the exact same window I have on a shed. I guess it held up OK while moving?
@Amberdawnn765 жыл бұрын
I'm just beginning my process. I had. I idea what kind of window to look for. That was the first major lesson you provided. The way you hung the window was so simple I'm sure I can do it too. Did you insulate the walls? If so how dod you deal with the window sill? Since the window is flush to the skin how do you deal with the hole to the window through the insulation and whatever you cover that with?
@JimThomasOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
I did not insulate cause mostly I am a fair weather camper... but up above 10,000 feet it can still get pretty cold at night, even in the summer, so I kinda wished I had put insulation in the wall while I had the siding off during the window install. After cutting out the interior plywood siding to allow for the window, there was a bit of ragged plywood edges so I just used some 1"X4" to make a window frame on the inside around the window.
@Amberdawnn765 жыл бұрын
@@JimThomasOutdoors that could still work for me, building a window frame. I know the 1"x2" stuff is cheap enough. I live in Florida and it can get really hot at night and depending on where I am in January it can be in the low 40s or even high 30s. Not terrible but I camp with a little dog so it needs to stay warm. What did you use to lock the inside of the door at night.

so many recommend NOT putting shed windows in cargo vans. I so like the idea that it can be done and so reasonably price wise. How has this lasted for you? would you still recommend it?
@JimThomasOutdoors3 жыл бұрын
These windows have been over many a mile of wash boarded gravel roads without any problems, so yes, I would recommend it - as long as you are using safety glass.
@knowsbetter15 жыл бұрын
Hope you insulated the wall before putting plywood back.

Thanks for the video - I am curious how the windows have held up through the bumps and potholes. Have you ever worried they may shatter/crack during a long road trip? I am thinking of installing these windows in a future build.
@JimThomasOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
I have pulled the trailer in the mountains on gravel roads with wash-boarding and they have held up just fine... and if one ever did break (which I don't think they will), they are 1) safety glass and 2) a replacement would be very affordable.

How have they held up? Any rattling or getting loose? Looking to install them, but want to know if they'll last.

No rattling, they are solid with no leaks.

The white slats are they on the outside of the window ? I'd like to tint mine . 😎 Also the video keeps stalling at 43 seconds in.

Yes, the slats are on the outside of the window. My view of the video plays thru without any problem.

Where can one obtain this kind of window in that size range? Official RV windows are way more expensive than they should be.

I found them on Amazon.com... see my video description
