Howdy - it is really nice to see people doing projects with patience and planning without 10 minutes of repeating yourself jibber jabber, the throwing and dropping of tools and materials, and 10 second clips of 3 hours of work... I heard "silicone" mentioned. It seems that word has sneaked into our language to mean "sealant". There are proper sealants for use on the outside of vehicles that perform much better than hardware store "silicone" products. Great channel. Thanks

OMG..!!! You are the first builder I have seen who actually knows how to vapor barrier his trailer..!!! Smooth, moisture impenetrable insulation surface facing the interior, with a vapor barrier tape (aluminum tape) sealing the exposed joints.. 3 mil plastic roll sheeting over the insulation will also fair well if you can install it... This proper method prevents the interior moisture from passing through/behind the insulation and condensing on the cold metal surfaces creating rust & mildew.. This allows the moisture to remain inside the habitable/heated area, the same as any home, until you open passive/power vents to remove it.. BRAVO..!! LOL! Want to lessen interior moisture buildup..?? Stop Breathing..!! Estimating where the windows should be doesn't cut it... A scale plan should be drawn BEFORE windows are installed..

Loved this video. I cracked up when you covered your eyes and said “here?” 😂😂. Nikki & Dusty’s trailer is so cool. It’s wonderful to have supportive parents. Whenever I mention the idea & dream of living nomadically, my dad says I want to be a bag lady & is very discouraging. Tells me I come up with crazy ideas. I know he means well & wants the best for me but I need ppl who will support me even if my lifestyle & dreams do not align with what they want me to be. Anyway, excited to see how their trailer turns out😊👍🏽
@gonagain4 жыл бұрын
If you are interested in living nomadically I think you should try it. You can always go back to sticks and bricks whenever you want! Well, there is an exception... If a person sells a house and then spends the money on a new RV and uses the rest of the money to live on, then change their mind and want to go back, they have nothing to return to. If you decide to do it out-of-pocket, with a less expensive outfit (like a TON of people have done), then you can pull it off easily. I say follow your dreams.

Gonagain Thank you!😊Yes, that’s exactly what I want to do! I own a home & my son is in college. He graduates in 2022. My plan is to take an intermittent retirement for one year & live on the road. I don’t want debt so I’m currently saving for one year of expenses on the road & I plan to buy a minivan & configure it to live in. This is why my parents think I want to be a “bum.” They simply do not get it. 😔 My dad says I should keep working so I’ll have a decent retirement. He worked until he was 65. Today I installed the two windows in my 5x8. Vintage Technologies 14"x21" windows fit perfectly between the 16" center wall studs; opening is actually 14.5". I've done van windows/sunroofs in the 1970s and sailboat ports/hatches in the 1980s so this wasn't a total unknown. I made a template for the first one and the hole was a bit small. Second one I used the frame as the guide and it popped right in. The self tapping screws didn't like the window frames so I pre-drilled all the holes and then they zipped right in. Neoprene gaskets on the window frames but I also put silicone around the outside as there were small gaps at 3 places. Suddenly, it doesn't look like a cargo trailer anymore. Your video was a big help.

Nice work on the window install and your other projects, good methodical planning. I'm glad to see someone besides me using a jig saw with a fine tooth blade. So many other vids use a cutoff wheel which in my opinion throws sparks everywhere, is prone to slippage and leaves a rough jagged edge that can cut the the rubber seal but mostly, it just plain looks bad and amateurish. In my cargo trailer that I wanted to still have the option to use as a cargo trailer, I had to do a little more planning and go slower because I have three rows of E-track on the side walls. Low, 12 inches from the floor; mid height; and up high, 18 inches down from the roof. Which made installing insulation a lot slower!

OK... I'm ABOUT to make my first cut. into my trailer's skin! 🙁 But, before I do may I ask you one more question please? Should I cut the 15"(15"x24" window) wide part of the hole right in the middle of the 24" On-centers leaving 4.5" gap on each side? Or, cut closer to one of the 1" frame rails to support the one side? How did you do it? Looks like u cut right in the middle. That being the case, did you have to make wood supports around the frame of the window or just used the plywood as support? I would gladly pay you (or anyone) that helps me! Thank you! Art
@gonagain3 жыл бұрын
Hello Art, happy to help. You'll see that we also cut through the 1/2 inch interior paneling and that's what gives the window the necessary support without having to add any additional wood. And, yes, it just happens to be right in the middle in this case. With the foam sandwiched in between it's plenty stiff enough.

Nice Job.... I am in the process of converting an 8x16 v-nose cargo trailer into an RV and Mobile Sign Shop. I am just starting the walls and cabinets construction. I just sold a 15-passenger shuttle bus that I lived in for 3 years and traveled out west during the winters. I had to sell the shuttle bus because I purchased a large format color printer to make contour cut decals/stickers, koozies, t-shirts, magnetics, banners, mousepads, etc. The large format color printer would have taken up a lot of storage space so I needed to get something bigger. I did a complete conversion series on the shuttle bus from the ground up and now am doing a new series on the cargo trailer conversion. They are on my YT channel.

There seems to be a debate that some kind of framing needs to be put when doing windows. Whether that be a 2x1 or something on the inside. Question I have is, did you do that or think you might need to? And what did you do with bigger windows such as a 2x4' or something (if you ever did that)
@gonagain11 ай бұрын
I wouldn't put any wood in the wall because of the possible condensation and rot, but I've seen where people have welded in extra framework to make the wall more solid when installing larger windows. If you cut a vertical frame, then you would install a horizontal piece to tie the cut ends together, like framing around a house window. It's one of the main reasons we went with these small windows because we didn't have to cut any framing. Others have said that if you're only cutting one vertical frame it's no big deal. Whatever you do, don't use wood.
@groth33953 жыл бұрын
Nice. 2cts: I would have put a bead of silicone caulk on the lip of the window and then pressed it into opening. As soon as screws are installed inside - you can clean off the excess caulk extruded outside of the frame....I guess I'm paranoid about water incursion. Also, I will be cutting thru one 1 x 1 1/2 rectangular steel tube frame upright as the wall windows are 15x24 horizontal and a 15x24 vertical for the door. I will be so glad to see some progress on mine as opposed to the acquisition phase of items and parts. Thanks and happy trails.

I was using a high quality metal cutting blade that was the longest one I could get. Make sure you have a few on hand before you begin. On my steel cargo trailer I also remember resorting to the Sawzall to get through the steel supports, but a saber saw will do it with the extra blades on hand. Like I mentioned in the video, don't push the saw along or the blade will wonder off course and ruin the cut. Go easy.

This was so helpful! Looking into purchasing our own trailer soon to travel! not sure if you have shared this info, but what brand are the windows? thank you!!

Glad we can help. As for the windows, I just figured out what size I wanted and what the wall thickness was and then ordered them off of Amazon.

@@gonagain did you include the outer trailer liner in the thickness? I'm having trouble locating that info for mine.

Hi, just wondering what type tires you run on your to Tow vehicle? Ralph Williams

BF Goodrich All Terrain KO2s. So far so good and it didn't change my mileage much from the Michelin highway tires they replaced.

What brand is the aluminum trailer and how much does it cost? Any recommendation?
@gonagain4 жыл бұрын
Hi Craig. My trailer is a Stealth brand and is well made. I bought it lightly used so I'm not sure what a new one costs. There are some Facebook pages and online forums that talk about the different brands and what they're like. Mostly, when you go to look a one on the lot, you can see if it's any good or not, but by researching that brand before you go you should find reviews about it.

Why do you have to cut from the outside in?
@gonagain Жыл бұрын
Because the outside provides room for the saw to move around as I do the cuts.

My only recommendation would be not to install a window that close to the door. Makes it much easier for someone to break the glass and unlock the door from the inside. Great job!

Thanks for the video , I would have liked to see how the windows go togeather. Is it just a ring on the inside? Wish you would have shown all the components to the window. Thanks
@gonagain10 ай бұрын
The window is the part you see on the outside plus the aluminum trim piece on the inside. These two pieces almost touch when they are mated and fastened together, clamping them in place on the wall.

Thanks , so are they all standard width? I have a 16' Pace the wife and I are building out. We wanna put windows in I'm pretty mechanically inclined, however never did rv windows. Only asking becuase I am finding a bunch of nice windows on market place used for great prices. However if they come in different widths I'm gonna have to make sure I get the right ones. Thanks
